This Is A Story About A Girl

Back To The Start

"Guys, it just doesn't sound right!" I blurted.

"Of course it doesn't sound right. There's only one guitar, how good can it sound?" Brian mumbled frustratedly. We were all frustrated, but Brian was ready to explode. He wasn't used to the coming and going of band members like the rest of us were. This was our what, fifth band?

Last Call For Camden fell in a couple months ago, and that was hard. But Stephen found Brian and we thought we had a chance. But then Dylan left.. And now Stephen thinks he found a guitarist. I think he's just found false hope.

"I swear, Josh is going to be the perfect fit. Just.. trust me," my brother almost pleaded for us to go with it.

"Okay, when is he com-"

"Oh, hey guys!" A blonde beckoned from the other side of the warehouse. That must have been him. He wielded a fender on his back, and behind him was a.. Tiny brunette? What the hell? He brought his girlfriend or some shit?

"There he is, the man of the hour! And he brought a friend. Who are you?" Stephen wondered, obviously worrying about having an audience. He was so insecure sometimes. Josh shook his hand, and did so with all of us. His smile was genuine, and he seemed like a great guy.

I was more worried about the girl. She was his sister apparently, and was forced to come against her will. But I didn't care, she was beautiful. Josh called her Liz, which I assumed wasn't her real name. I couldn't help but stare at her. She was that kind of beautiful you could only find naturally. And she was staring right back at me. I looked down to my vans, and stepped back over to my spot on the stage. Why do I have to be so awkward?

I showed Josh the chords, and we got to playing. It immediately sounded better with him there. Liz was sitting on an amp, looking bored. I couldn't help but notice she looked distraught.

"What, are we that bad?" Stephen groaned. He must have noticed her too.

"No, actually, you sound fantastic!" She said gleefully. That made me smile, but then she said that Josh was out of tune. She grabbed his guitar, and started turning the knobs like a pro.

"How did you know it was out of tune?" I pondered. She handed the guitar back to Josh.

"She's just got a real ear for guitar, better than anyone else I know." Josh explained. Liz's face turned a bright shade of pink, and she mumbled something about how mine was off too.

I decided to see how good she really was. I was picky as hell when it came to my guitar, and if she could tune it, she'd be pretty damn good. We all just stood there in awe as she sat on the dusty floor and flicked at my acoustic's strings.

"This is a real beauty," she said, with a goofy grin on her face. She handed it back to me, and smiled. I had to hold my jaw from dropping. She was amazing.

"Uh, band meeting!" Brian called from Jess' drum set, "Holy shit she's good. And so are you Josh. Would you mind if we used your sister as a tech?" Brian had a good plan there.

"Yeah, as long as you guys don't mind my sister tagging along. She's good at tuning and loves music. She'd say yes for sure."

"You're in!" Jess squealed like a little girl. I worried if having two girls would be a problem, but then I looked back at Liz's grey blue eyes, and the way they lit up when we told her the news.

Nope, shouldn't be a problem at all.

"We can even share a row in the van!" Jess squealed at Liz. We were at our favourite restaurant, McDougals. We had been hanging out like best friends, and for once, our band actually felt like a whole.

"No, Lizzy is sharing a row with me, cause we are besties, and that's what besties do." I proclaimed loudly. Liz laughed and rocked on the seat. We really were becoming best friends. She and I got along really well, and she understood me. It was new for me to have someone like that.

Okay, let's face it. Liz was a hit among the band. Her and Jess chattered like there was no tomorrow, she and brian could talk forever, and Stephen just hung out with her like they were best friends forever. I'll admit to a little jealousy when they had her attention, but for the most part, I was unbelievably glad we had the Montgomery's along.

"Don't I have any say in it?" Liz half laughed, half seriously asked.

"Oh, now you've done it." Stephen chuckled.

"Who do you like better Liz? Who do you WANT to share a row with?" Jess and I asked repeatedly.

Liz just laughed. And that made us all laugh. But she did end up choosing me, and the first night we left, she put her head on my shoulder.

"This is going to be a real adventure, I can tell," she whispered so that only I could hear.

"What's so adventurous about driving in a crowded van for hours across the country?"

"Doing it with my best friends," she whispered again, and grabbed my hand. I squeezed her tiny fingers in mine. This was going to be something, that's for sure.
