Zero

Sweet October

After an unrelenting day of school, Zero made her way home to ponder over the events that took place during the day. As she walked along the sidewalk of the street, along her neighbourhood, a loud siren began to rapidly come towards her. She noticed a light flashing in the distance, and as the spectacle began to get closer, a large white ambulance came passing by her. She stopped in her tracks and took a look back at which way the ambulance was heading. In her head flashed an image of her mother. She could hear the forceful sound of a crying baby lashing out. She could see the flames of that old house getting bigger and bigger, the noises kept getting louder. Then suddenly Zero held her hands against her ears, and let out a yelping cry. Within another flash, Zero returned back to reality. Her body quivered with emotion, as something was slowly sucking the life out of her from inside her head, she could feel as if her heart was now beating inside her head, and the pain would grow deeper, and deeper.

Zero kept on walking all the way home until she finally reached the front door of her house as she had felt tired and partially grieving. As she came in, October was sitting on the stairs waving its tail back and forth as if it were waiting for someone to play with it. Harley was sitting on the couch in the living room fast asleep, and snoring away with his bifocals hanging down at the tip of his nose area. Zero was exhausted, and slowly slouched her way all the way up the stairs to her bedroom. October noticed Zero passing him on the way, and had quickly followed right behind. Zero dropped her bag on the floor, and tumbled down upon her bed. Her hair was tossed and turned, and eyes slightly dense, as if she could bear to open them a second longer. October jumped up onto the bed and sat himself right beside Zero. Within under a minute, Zero had begun to drift away, and soon her eyes were closed, as she floated off into another world.

“Is she dead?” a voice squealed.

“No, if she were dead, her body would rot and smell.” Another voice answered, in a much lower tone.

“Walter, you’re such a twerp!” the high-pitched voice responded again

Zero’s eyes slowly began to open, as she felt her body had been lying on top of rocks and gravel for hours. Zero had woken up to see herself in a different light. She was no longer confined to the four walls of her bedroom. Looking around, she was surrounded by an awe-immersing world which looked different to her usual surrounding. The sky was red, and flying across was long wispy clouds, she was surrounded by a field of red and yellow flowers, and was centered in by the hilly landscape that circled around her.

Not only that. Zero was dressed in much different clothing then she’d usually wear. She was wearing a violet-coloured dress with yellow stockings, and large black boots. Her hair was pinned into two pigtails from each side, but she kept her gorgeous black hair, that still lingered down her back, with excessive length.

“You!” an estranged fairy ordered with her finger pointed towards her.

“Me?” Zero answered with questionable mind.

“She can’t help us!” the second voice called again from a short dwarf-like creature, as he ordered a thunderous roar at the fairy. Zero watched the two with surprised look on her face. “She can help us.” The fairy replied “She’s the...” the fairy whispered something into the dwarf’s ear.

Zero stood up towards the two, and circled around them, wondering to get an answer to all the questions that had played out in her mind for the brief period “Excuse me, but who are you?” The two hesitated for a second. Finally, the dwarf grunted as he begun to introduce himself. “Ahe-heh-em!” As he was about to let out a monumental speech, the fairy interrupted. “We come from the land far beyond those hills” she pointed her finger towards the marvel distance. Zero turned her head, as she gazed at the landscape. “You live up there?” She spoke. “I am Priscilla, and this is my friend Walter.” She introduced.

“Oh please help us Princess! Please!” Walter expressed towards Zero in a panicky voice, as he ran up grabbing her by her arms. Zero kneeled down at Walter to look at the fear that drew across his face. “The monster.” He continued. “It’s wrecked our village, and trapped our friends.”

“We can’t do anything about it” Priscilla interrupted. Zero stood back up. “I’ll try to help you as best as I can, but I don’t see what good I would be able to do for the both of you.” Zero mentioned, in instructive manner.

The trio set off on their way to the village beyond the hills. As Zero was walking alongside Priscilla, and Walter, she began to ask: “Can you tell me where I am exactly?” Zero looked at all the trees and bush, and beautiful landscape that surrounded her. “You are on Earth.” Walter said bluntly. “We live amongst a land of many mythical creatures.” Priscilla explained to Zero. “Our world is your world. And this is where your true happiness lies the most” Priscilla continued to go on, and explain to Zero. “I think there’s some mistake.” Zero protested.

“Nonsense!” Walter exclaimed. “Your name is Zero.”

“How did you know that?” Zero asked in a surprised tone of voice.

“You are the Princess of our world my dear. Almost everybody knows about you.” Priscilla replied. “This isn’t possible.” Zero uttered to herself. “Oh but it is. Your beauty and eloquence reigns over the four corners of this planet.” Zero watched in astonishment, as Priscilla went on preaching about her. “But lately...” She continued, only this time in a much lighter tone. “The world has been overrun by a sudden plague of evil, of horrific trolls, and demonic creatures that suddenly linger upon this earth. This darkness is reined by a supreme ruler of the underworld.”

“She’s a mean old witch!” Walter interrupted. “Her name is Quescelina, and she calls herself the wicked witch of the underworld.” Priscilla continued to explain. Zero turned her head and looked up at the red sky above her. She took notice of a several black oval-like figures that were floating in the sky, and pondered to herself over the mysterious happenings that lie deep within this world. She had been living as a Princess for all this time? She thought to herself. Zero was left to wonder why she had now suddenly begun to realise this. She had also pondered the thought of what happened before the time she woke up, and magically stumbled upon the glorious scenery that surrounded her. She soon realised that she must have been dreaming all this time, and that everything around her was just a simple figment of her imagination which played towards her happiness. But why is there a sudden feel of disparity lingering in the air. And what – she continued to beg herself – What entered her dream world that would take away this happiness. Who or what was the void that had cut a hole between this the dimension and the one that caused her dream to feel so miserable?

Zero continued to walk along with the others until they finally reached the village that was hidden in the distant forest. The trio stepped in between the bushes as they watched a troll tear the once peaceful village to its doom. All they could see now were the small houses crushed into rubble, rocks and stones were moved out of place and cracked, the straw that sat upon the roof of their homes, tossed and withered around, and trash and carnage spilt along the dirty ground. Zero and the others were kneeled down in between several trees, and a few bushes. Zero looked over at the post and read what was encrypted on it. It read: ‘OCADANA’.

Zero questioned the name in a silent whisper. “Why, that’s the name of our village.” Priscilla replied, in an equally quiet tone of voice.

“Help us!” A cry was heard along with several others, coming from a nearby cave over on the west corner of the village.

Priscilla gasped loudly as she couldn’t help but recognize the voices that were being heard from the cave. The troll stopped in its tracks of destruction, as he could’ve sworn he had just heard a distinct sound. The troll went towards the noise that had been heard in between the bushes. Walter and Priscilla began to panic and grasp each other’s arms, as they could see the large creature moving towards them. The troll peeped into the bushes, and noticed the three sets of eyes that were hidden in the dark shadowy figure. The troll frowned with rage, as it was ready to pelt whatever was lingering between the bushes. Suddenly a fourth set of eyes emerged from out of nowhere. The eyes were golden yellow, and with a roaring sound, the unknown creature leaped from the bushes, and grabbed a hold of the troll. Walter and Priscilla screamed in terrific horror, as they could not believe their eyes. The glorious black-shaded creature galloped towards the troll. Zero watched on in disbelief, as she could not believe her eyes at the bizarre conflict of what was happening. The troll struggled to wrestle the creature off, but with all its strength it couldn’t shake the creature from its firm hold that it had on him. The creature lifted its gigantic paws ready to strike at any moment with its long sharp claws. Priscilla and Walter continued to watch on as they were beginning to fear for their lives. With a wave of its paw, the creature lashed a deadly swipe upon the troll, piercing its nails straight down its rugged face, and jaw. The blood from the troll slowly trickled on the ground, as the troll had began screaming in enormous pain. The blood quickly began to drip even faster, as the horrific display of the creature was swiping away back and fourth, with its long deadly claws. The carcass of the troll began to rip into shreds, until there were little pieces left behind. Zero stood firmly, and watched from the tree she was standing beside, as she gazed upon the marvellous creature. She could almost recognize its face, its eyes. He had emerged into a beautiful black panther. She knew that he would recognize her if she stepped out from the shadow she was in, and with his help, maybe she could find a way to rid the evil that was living amongst her world. After finishing what little piece it had upon the troll, the panther sensed the trio that were watching from the bushes. He howled out a threatening roar at the invisible trio that were hiding. Priscilla and Walter were gasping, as they thought their lives were about to be swiped away just like that troll a second ago. “It’s ok.” Zero interrupted, as she presented herself towards the creature. Priscilla and Walter, stopped gasping, and looked on in disbelief. “I know him.” Zero gazed her eyes upon the panther’s golden eyes, as she could almost see the black kitten she knew a few years ago had turned into such a marvellous beast. She slowly walked up to him. The creature stood firmly, not knowing what stranger was coming towards her. The panther began to get defensive as the strange girl approached him. “There, there, October.” Zero placed her gentle hand on the creature’s soft black fur. October had dropped his guard of defence and with a flash of memory, he soon realised that the girl wearing the beautiful dress was not a stranger, she was its owner, and it had allowed her to gently stroke her hand on its fur back and forth. “Zero.” The gigantic cat uttered. Zero could not believe her ears at what she just heard. October was uttering her name. She lifted her head, and looked into October’s eyes, “Zero.” October uttered again in a calm and gentle voice. Soon Priscilla and Walter emerged from their hiding spot to greet the creature. Zero rested her head on October’s large arm and began to feel at peace in his gentle softness.

After a brief second, Walter ran straight for the cave, following Priscilla behind. The fairy and the dwarf had stumbled upon the prison inside the cave that had held their friends captive for the longest while. With a turn of the latch, the cage door swung open. The magical elves and mythical creatures all ran outside with great happiness and relief that the creature was gone and perished. Priscilla and Walter were both at peace for the moment, but the brief happiness was not enough to wipe away the strong imminent evil that was still lingering upon this world. Quescelina, that evil witch of the underworld was out there somewhere waiting to plan her next move, but what form of darkness does she unleash amongst this estranged world? Why here? Why choose Zero’s dreamland, and turn it into a nightmare. It was not until her next deep slumber that Zero would find out about Quescelina’s mysterious plan amongst this earth. Until then Zero had to drift a little while longer and find out what’s keeping her dreams from becoming reality.

Zero’s eyes suddenly sprung open. She found herself sitting at her desk in the math classroom at her school. Zero looked around, and saw no one sitting in the desks. It was just her, all alone. Suddenly a nasty screech was heard noisily at the front of the classroom. Ms. Thorn was dragging her long fingernails and sliding them across the black chalkboard at the front of the classroom. Zero held her hands, covering her ears as hard as she could, but the painful screeching would not go away. In her mind, she could see Ms. Thorn coming towards her, smiling in the most diabolical grin. “Your mother never loved you!” Ms. Thorn screamed in her ear. “Your mother was a slut!” She continued to scream. Zero began to shake her head and cry, as the tears began to pour down her face. “You never loved her!” The voices continued to pound in her head. “It’s all because of you that she’s dead!”

“No!” Zero yelled out an elongated scream. Suddenly Ms. Thorn lifted up a sharp, but shiny knife that gleamed in the light. With a quick jab, she threw the knife into Zero’s chest, piercing threw her heart. The screaming from Zero began to get louder, and louder, even as she felt the pain was circling threw her body, mentally and physically. The blood began to rush through her body, and quickly drip from the outside. Zero’s head tilted backwards in her desk, as she could feel her life slipping from the brink of reality. Ms. Thorn was watching, and laughing diabolically the whole time, as she enjoyed the pleasure of seeing Zero suffer through so much pain. Soon Zero’s body collapsed at her desk. Ms. Thorn had stopped laughing, and released the knife right from her chest. She lifted the knife, and took a handkerchief from her skirt pocket, and slowly cleaned the blood that stained the deadly blade. She turned around and slowly walked back up to the front desk, slowly one step at a time in her large heels.

Zero leaped from her bed, breathing heavily, as she was gasping for air, from the dream she just had. She looked around her, and noticed October was gone from her bed. She turned her body, dropping her legs halfway off the bed, as she sat up on the side. She looked at her arms and her body, and began to think over at all the dreams that just happened to her. So many thoughts had raced through her mind, and so many questions waiting to be answered. Was this all real? Or have I been dreaming for so long, she began to ask herself.

It was 6 A.M. and she knew she had to get to school this morning. She couldn’t help but wonder if all the events that happened to her were actually real. Was Ms. Thorne the new math teacher at Huntsville Grange? Did Lucas actually die? All of this and more were soon about to be answered as she started to get ready for another day of school at Huntsville Grange Secondary School.
