Six year-old Lynette Parker Wells is an orphan who has moved from home to home in hopes of finding her real parents. Always fleeing from orphanages around New York, she quickly comes upon a teenage troublemaker, Jesse Parker.

Jesse can never seem to follow the rules, living with his horrible Aunt Lucinda and Uncle Lewis since his parents passed away in a car accident. Yo can predict for both of them that life never seems to go right.

That is, until he meets Lenny. Meeting on a busy Monday after being almost expelled, Jesse meets the orphan on the streets of New York after Lenny had escaped the orphanage where she was held.
