The New Girl
I feel the wind start to remind me.
Monday morning and school came a lot quicker than I expected. I hadn't heard from Jess in weeks and I was starting to miss our catch up calls. They were the only things that kept me sane when I got here and after my date with Nick I needed to chat with her.
It's not like our date was bad, but it wasn't good. The date itself was lovely; a candle-lit dinner, soft music playing in the background, a beautiful view. It was a picnic, Nick took me to a park nearer to his house than mine and don't get me wrong, it was beautiful but... I wasn't with the person I wanted to be with. Although I hate to admit it, I wanted to be with John.
My mind was wandering during the date. Wandering to where John was, what he was doing, what he was thinking, if he was thinking about me, if so what was he thinking about me? Ugh. I needed to stop with that, I'd been like that all weekend.
"Katie.." Kenny said leaning over to me interrupting my thought's. I looked up at him from my piece of work, if you can call it that. It only had the date on it. "Are you alright? You haven't done any work..." He trailed off whilst staring at me. I nodded my head.
"Just thinking is all" I told him staring into his beautiful hazel eyes. Kennedy Brock is a beautiful boy don't get me wrong. But he's too much like a brother to be like that with him. Kenny raised his eyebrow at me.
"What about?" He asked curiously.
"Just... stuff." I informed him. It's not that I don't want to open up to Kenny, I do want to, I just can't in school, I'm the new girl, still, and if anyone heard me disclosing stuff to Kenny then it'd be all over school. I still get stares from people as I walk down the hall.
I've told Kenny practically everything about me, my life, my family, my friends, my old school, why I moved here... The list goes on. Kenny's told me about himself too, I hope almost the same amount as I've disclosed to him.
"C'mon Katie, it's me" He said smiling sympathetically at me. I sucked in a deep breath and went to tell him what was on my mind, when suddenly the fire alarm went off. I nearly jumped out of my skin. I sighed and shoved the crap from the desk into my backpack before grabbing it and walking with Kenny out of the room.
We were the only two from our class to take our stuff, ignoring the teacher's orders. As if I was going to leave my shit in there. Kenny didn't speak while we walked outside, probably because I wouldn't have heard him over the bimbo's screeching.
"I'll tell you later" I told him as we got outside. Kenny nodded his head but didn't question me. We managed to find Pat, Garrett and Jared in the sea of people swarming outside of the school. The three of them had the same idea as Kenny and I.
"Shall we sneak off?" Garrett asked us. The idea stunned me, I've never skipped school in my life and hearing the suggestion from Garrett shocked me the most. "They won't notice" He added, the boys all bobbed their heads agreeing with Garrett's statement while my mouth hung open.
"It's only second lesson" I managed to spit out. Garrett looked at me oddly.
"And?"
"I think they might notice if we all disappear..." Garrett shook his head at my comment and didn't reply.
"She is right guys" Jared piped up, a triumphant smile spread across my face. "And it's the first day back after spring break, they're gonna notice" he added. Garrett let out a deep sigh.
"You won this round Pierce" Garrett said intimidatingly.
"And I'll win the next one, Nickelsen" I said with a laugh. Garrett laughed lightly.
"Katie, you know your backpack clashes with your outfit" Pat informed me, how very masculine of him. I nodded my head. "You look nice though" He said causing me to blush.
"Thanks" I said shyly.
"Nick's definatley noticed." He added whilst wiggling his eyebrows. I blushed.
"Are you two together then?" Jared asked, he was only asking what everyone was wondering but it made me uncomfortable.
"I don't know..." I trailed of, in all honesty I didn't know. I didn't know if I wanted to be Nick's girlfriend but I didn't want to hurt him. "He's not actually said yet..." I added.
"Well do you want to be with him?" Garrett asked catching me off guard. I bit my lip and looked past Kenny at Nick who was staring at me with a smile plastered on his face.
"I uh..." I began still looking at him. "I'm not sure" I said truthfully as I turned back to Garrett with a scared look on my face.
"Well make your mind up kiddo, he's coming over." Jared told me, Jared had never called me 'kiddo' before... it kinda confused me. I sucked in a deep breath as Nick approached me. Kenny, Garrett, Pat and Jared walked away as Nick stood in front of me.
"Hey" I greeted, with a smile. He returned the favor. He stood with his hands in his pockets looking uncomfortable. "What's up?" I asked concerned.
"Nothing" He lied, I've noticed that when Nick lies he can't look you in the eye.
"Nick, what's wrong?" I asked worried. He shook his head.
"Are we a couple?" He asked suddenly, catching me off guard. I was speechless. He shook his head. "Sorry" He said. "I knew I shouldn't have asked." he muttered, I felt sorry for him. "Do you even want a relationship?" he asked sounding a little angry. I simply shrugged. Nick sighed. "Then why did you go on three dates with me if you were just stringing me along"
"Whoa. I wasn't stringing you along Nick" I said bluntly and honestly. "I'm new here." I began "I've been here three weeks, what are people going to think?"
"What does it matter?" He asked. "I like you, you obviously like me if you went on three dates with me, so what does anyone else have to do with it?" He said stumping me. I didn't know what to say.
"What do you want?" I asked. "Do you want a relationship?" I added uneasily. Nick nodded. "Why with me?" I asked obviously catching him off guard.
"What do you mean?" He asked raising an eyebrow.
"Why do you want to be with me? There's tons of prettier, smarter and skinnier girls here, why me?" I asked insecurely. I really did want to know Nick's intentions, whether he actually liked me or whether he just wanted to 'get with' the new girl.
"I like you Katie. You're more interesting than any of the girls here why wouldn't I want you?" He asked rhetorically. I blushed and looked down at the concrete floor. "Look, I understand you're scared, you just moved here and I get that you're going to be a bit wary, but I'm not a bad guy." He said sincerely. "I'm not going to hurt you" He promised.
I looked up at him biting my lip. He stared at me intently with his big muddy green eyes, that's the best way I could describe them. I brushed a piece of my hair away from my face before grinning at Nick.
"You sure know how to charm a girl" I said flirtatiously. Nick chuckled lightly. "One condition though" I informed him. His smile faded quicker than it had appeared. "Don't look so worried, I was just gonna ask you to walk me to class" I said grinning at him once again.
Nick laughed and wrapped his arms around my waist pulling me into a hug. He kept his arms around my waist as he looked down at me, with a cheeky grin he leaned his head down to mine so our nose's were touching, our breath dancing across each others lips.
"May I?" He said repeating what he'd said the first time we kissed. I bit my lip and nodded. Nick brushed his lips along mine before he kissed me softly. His lips moving perfectly with mine, that was until our kiss was broken with a deep cough from behind me. I jumped away from Nick's lips with a guilty smile spread across my face. I turned around to see Kenny, Garrett, Pat, Jared, Jenny and John, who were more focused on each other to worry about Nick and me. Kenny gave me a questioning look, I knew the question behind the look, I nodded my head at him before he and I smiled. For the first time since I moved to Tempe, I was genuinely happy, being with Nick had this effect on me.
Nick looked down at me with a smile before kissing my cheek. John looked over as Nick laced his fingers in mine, letting them dangle by our sides as we looked at each other, I could see Nick and I shared the same feelings. I glanced over at John, who was glaring at Nick. I laughed lightly as he whispered sweet nothings in my ear, causing John's hand to slide out of Jenny's and turn into clenched fists. I laughed quietly to myself. John was jealous and that amused me the most. I could see the others were happy for Nick and I, hell even Jenny was even though I hadn't spoken to her since she started dating John. I smiled at John knowing it would aggravate him.
It did.
It's not like our date was bad, but it wasn't good. The date itself was lovely; a candle-lit dinner, soft music playing in the background, a beautiful view.
