The New Girl

Some things are out of my hands.

"Hello?" I answered my phone groggily.

"Katie?" John asked down the line.

"You called me John, you should know who it is." I teased as I sat up in bed, still half asleep.

"Why aren't you at school?" He asked in a disapproving tone. I looked over at the alarm clock by my bed. It was 1 o'clock. I sighed and let out a groan.

"I don't even know." I said fiddling with the duvet. I heard John sigh down the other end. "Garrett took me out last night and we went to some lake or something and.. I don't know." I said unsure of last nights events.

"So You got drunk?" John asked sounding angry.

"I guess so." I said with a sigh.

"Was it just you and Garrett?" He asked frantically.

"I don't think so. I remember there being a lot of people." I said with a laugh.

"This isn't funny Katie. You know not to get drunk on a school night." John said sounding more like my father than my boyfriend.

"Chill out John, this is the first time it's ever happened." I said getting a little angry.

"You should know better Katie." He said spitefully. His words stung. "Christ. I leave you alone for one day and you're out getting wasted." He said disapprovingly.

"Oh don't act all holier than thou." I spat. "As if you've never got drunk on a school night."

"We're not talking about me Katie." He said, annoying me further.

"Why are we talking about me then?!" I said loudly down the phone. "I fucked up John, I get that. You don't need to give me some big ass lecture." I said with a sigh.

"Well you need to go to school tomorrow." He ordered. I sighed.

"Are you my boyfriend or my dad?" I asked spitefully.

"Your dad may not care about you getting a full education but I do." He said causing the anger to boil up inside of me.

"What?" I asked aggressively.

"You heard me Katie."

"Don't fucking bring my dad into an argument John. You know he cares about me and my education." I spat.

"Well he didn't care enough to stop you going out last night." John said with a sigh. I was fuming.

"You know what John? I'm not in the fucking mood to talk to you. When you stop being an arrogant prick, call me back." I said before I hung up on him. I slammed my phone on the bedside table and ignored John calling me back.

I climbed out of bed and walked into the bathroom. I had a long shower hoping it would wash away the argument from my mind. I applied a small amount of make up before walking back into my room to get changed.

I pulled on my clothes, put on my jewelry and grabbed my phone before heading downstairs. I checked my phone for texts or missed calls.

8 missed calls;
John O'Callaghan
John O'Callaghan
John O'Callaghan
John O'Callaghan
John O'Callaghan
John O'Callaghan
John O'Callaghan
Garrett Nickelsen.

I deleted the missed calls from John, still furious with him and called Garrett.

"Hello? Garrett answered.

"You called earlier?" I asked with a smile.

"Oh, yeah. I called to see if you were alright. You were completely out of it last night" He said with a chuckle. I blushed, good thing he couldn't see me.

"I'm fine thanks." I lied. Garrett went silent as the background noise became louder.

"Have you uh spoke to John recently?" He asked curiously.

"Unfortunately." I said with a sigh.

"What's up?"

"It's a long story." I said with a sigh.

"Well come tell us, we're at Denny's."

I agreed to meet everyone at Denny's seeing as it's only a few blocks away from me. I left the house with a sigh and walked through the park listening to my music. I pulled on the rusty iron gates and suddenly remembered when I first met John.

"Could you help me please?" I asked the group nervously. One of the boys stood up, he was tall and lanky. He had brown hair that spread across the back of his neck and swept across his forehead, he patted the sides as he stood up. He gave me a crooked smile as he pulled on the gates, they opened immedietly. "Thank you" I said sliding through to the other side.

"No problem, enjoy your run" He said shutting the gate behind me.

I tugged at the gates, suddenly upset and walked quickly to Denny's, holding back the tears. I walked in and found Garrett, Jared, Kenny and Pat sat at a booth towards the back. Kenny waved me over and I joined them at the table.

"Hey!" Pat said with a wide smile. I smiled at him faintly instead of saying 'Hi'. Kenny looked over at me worriedly.

"What's wrong?" He asked suspiciously. I didn't feel embarrassed or worried about what the guys would think. They're like my family.

"John had a fat off go at me on the phone." I explained almost in tears.

"What about?" Jared asked curiously.

"Because I got drunk last night he thinks he has the right to act like my dad and he had the cheek to insult my dad on his parenting skills." I said frustrated and angry.

"How did he insult your dad's parenting skills?" Kenny asked suspiciously.

"He claimed that my dad doesn't care if I go out and get drunk." I said with a sigh.Garrett frowned and looked down at his lap. He pulled his phone up to his ear and answered the person that was waiting on the other end of the call.

"Hello?" He said with a blank expression. His blank expression turned into a worried one. He looked directly at me which began to scare me.

"Who is it?" I mouthed to him worried.

"John." He mouthed back. I sighed and tried my best to ignore Garrett on the phone to John.

"Uh... Katie?" He said, I looked over at him. "She's here... Yeah." He said, answering John's obvious question. "Katie." Garrett said holding his hand over the end of the phone. "He want's to talk to you." He said quietly.

"I don't want to talk to him." I said bluntly with a shake of my head. I received disapproving looks from Kenny, Jared and Garrett. "Don't look at me like that." I warned the three.

"Talk to him Katie." Kenny ordered.

"Clear the air." Jared added onto Kenny's order. I sighed and Garrett handed me the phone.

"Hello." I said bluntly. I heard John sigh down the other end.

"You're still mad aren't you?" He asked.

"What do you think?" I asked rhetorically.

"I'm sorry Katie. I was completely wrong and I shouldn't have said that about your dad."

"No, you shouldn't have."

"I know, and I'm sorry." He said sincerely. I sighed in defeat.

"It's okay. I'm sorry for getting mad." I replied.

"So, I might be home earlier than expected." He said changing the subject. I smiled widely.

"When do you think you'll be back?" I asked excitedly.

"Maybe tomorrow morning." He said, I could hear him smile.

"Will you be in school tomorrow?" I asked.

"If I get home in time." He said with a chuckle. I smiled. "If not I'll see you when I come pick you up for prom." My smile faltered a little bit but soon returned at the though of seeing John again. "Well, I've got to get going." He said.

"Oh, okay." I said disappointed. He chuckled lightly.

"It's only another day Katie, I'll see you soon." He said sweetly. I sighed and agreed.

"I'll talk to you later then." I said sadly.

"Yeah. I love you Katie." He said with sincerity. I smiled widely again.

"I love you too." I said happily.

"Be safe!" He ordered before he hung up. I handed Garrett his phone back with a stupid smile spread across my face.

"You're such a loser." Garrett said with a grin.

"Shut up creep." I said with a playful smile. Garrett laughed lightly and went back to eating his food as did the others. I wasn't hungry, I just wanted John back.
