Just a Kiss

Goodnight

Jonathan Toews let himself quietly into his condo and set down his things. His body ached from the hits he took in the game. He wanted nothing more than to relax a bit before calling it a night and getting some sleep. Before he could get too far into his condo, he heard the door across the hall from him open and close, followed by a quiet knock on his door. A smile formed on his face before he spun around and went to open the door.

“Hey Emily,” Jon said to his neighbor. He couldn’t help but let his eyes scan over her. She had curly brown hair that reached her shoulders and her piercing green eyes. Jon could get lost in them for days.

“Hey Jon, great game tonight,” she said with a small smile before letting herself into the condo. Jon closed the door behind her and turned around.

“Thanks.”

“That penalty on you was bullshit,” Emily said, sitting down on the couch and propping her feet up on Jon’s coffee table. He let out a chuckle and shook his head before moving over to the couch and joining her.

“Yea, but I did score that goal.”

Emily nodded her head before reaching out and grabbing the remote off the table. The two sat there while Emily flipped through the channels on the TV. After a few minutes she glanced over at Jon and scanned his outfit. He was still in his suit that he had slipped into after game.

“Aren’t you going to change?” she asked.

“Trying to get me naked?” he teased.. Emily rolled her eyes at him and picked up one of the throw pillows off the couch, hitting him.

“Shut up, I just thought you’d like be out of the suit.” As much as she had tried to play off his comment, Jon could see the faint blush on her cheeks. He couldn’t help but smirk.

“Still think you’re trying to get me naked,” Jon said with a chuckle before getting up off the couch. He definitely wanted to get out of the suit. Heading down the hallway, he disappeared into his room and changed into a pair of mesh shorts and t-shirt.

When he reappeared in the living room, Emily had found a movie to watch and was curled up on his couch. Jon couldn’t help but smile at the sight before him. She was a really sweet girl, friendly, and outgoing. They had met a couple weeks after Jon moved into the building. They had bumped into each other on the elevator and just seemed to hit it off. Despite the fact that they were just friends, Jon’s family adored Emily. His mother and Emily would go shopping whenever Andree came into town.

“Are you just going to stare off in to space like that or are you going to join me?”

Jon was pulled from his thoughts and looked at Emily with a smile. He rolled his eyes at her before moving over to the couch and sitting down next to her. Once he was comfortable, Emily scooted over, resting her head on his shoulder as they continued to watch the movie. This had become routine for the pair as they became friends. Something Jon wanted to become an everyday occurrence.

As the movie played on, Jon had to fight the urge not to completely wrap his arms around Emily. To take her down the hall to his room and never let her leave. He knew that he had it bad for her but would not act on his feelings. Jon didn’t want to ruin things between them. His mother tried countless times to get him to ask her out, t0 make a move but he wouldn’t.

Emily moved against Jon and let out a content sigh. Ignoring the internal battle with himself, Jon look down at her and felt that funny feeling in his stomach. She fit perfectly into his arms and he knew that was where she belonged.

When the movie ended, Emily was out like a light with her head resting in his lap. He reached down and ran his fingers gently through her hair. Jon debated about just carrying her down the hall to his room and letting her sleep there but he thought she might freak in the morning if he did that. Trying as best he could, Jon carefully got up and moved over to the bowl that was sitting on his bookshelf. He grabbed the spare keys to Emily’s apartment and slipped them in his pocket before going back to the couch. Without waking Emily up, he scooped her up in his arms and cared her across the hall.

The minute he opened the door Emily’s dog, Ella, started barking lot crazy.

“Shh, Ella, it’s me,” he said quietly. The dog hushed when Jon flipped on the lights. Thankfully, Emily was still asleep. He headed down the hallway to Emily’s room and carefully placed her down on her bed. Jon tucked her in gently before stepping back and watching her. Ella jumped on top the bed and curled up next to her owner.

Jon could help but smile again. He wanted nothing more than to sleep next to her every night. She looked like an angel sleeping peaceful. Something over came Jon suddenly and he took a step back over to the bed. Ella stirred from her sleep and looked up curiously at him. Leaning down, he gently pressed a soft kiss to her lips.

“Goodnight Emily,” he whispered quietly. Emily stirred slightly, causing Jon to jump away slightly He quickly turned and headed down the hallway, back to his apartment. Once he was back inside, he let out a sigh. His mother was right; he should just ask her out. Kissing her while she was sleeping wasn’t exactly making a move. Praying that she didn’t wake up when he kissed her and things wouldn’t get awkward, Jon reasoned with himself that he’d talk to her tomorrow.
