There is an ancient race of people that were known for their ability to enter people's dream. They were called Dream Catchers. They could enter a person's dream with just a touch to open a connection between each other. At night, they'll enter their dreams and protect them from their nightmares, making them their own.

And they also hold the key to Sam Winchester's survival.
