Sequel: Palm Trees

Seashells

new friends and broken traditions

August 14, 2002

This was the end of the first summer you missed. You weren't really significant to me at the time, not as much as you would be in later years. I had only known you for one summer.

It was business as usual, basically. I don't remember much, which means it was probably extremely boring. It wasn't horrible though. I would have remembered that.

The only thing I really remember is that I made a new friend. She was a newcomer to the island, and I met her at the beach. Her name? Simoya. You know her, of course. You knew her more than I'd have liked. But that comes up later.

Anyway, I had a friend to keep me company, and life was okay. But then it came time to leave for home. Once again, I went to go buy ice cream. For the first time, you weren't there.

And even though our tradition had only been going on for one (two, technically) year, something still felt... wrong.
