To most parental figures, a silent child is either shy or hiding something but to Mr. Malcolm Taylor and his wife Elsa, the silence was the very least of their worries. Elsa Taylor's niece, Lyra, rarely uttered a word for the first few years that she lived with them. It was as if she was in her own little world all the time. Initially, the couple shuffled through a variety of solutions, but in the end they grew to just accept it, hoping that it was just a phase. The neighbours thought that perhaps Lyra was a tad bit slow and always tried to usher noise from her vocal cords but to their dismay it resulted in no change whatsoever. On the occasion of conversation, Lyra never straight out ignored anyone. In most cases, she stayed composed and used a vast array of expressions to get her point across.
There was an exception, as there is to everything, where her emotions could not be gathered quickly enough to form an expression, and instead became an action. It was within a split second that the young girl’s once concrete composure completely shattered,
and in that very moment
Lyra knew that nothing would be the same anymore.
