The Change

A New Start

-Brian's POV-

I've lived in California my entire life and I don't remember it ever being this hot. All the guys were over for a barbeque and to swim in the pool. Well none of us wanted to go outside so we were all sitting in my living room where it was nice and cool.

"Hey your new neighbor is moving in." Zacky said as he stared out the window.

"Oh?" I asked not really caring.

"Damn she has nice legs." Jimmy mumbled from his spot next to Zacky.

Matt and Johnny ran towards the window and I couldn't help but roll my eyes. They did this anytime someone was moving in.

"Damnit she has kids."

I couldn't help but laugh as I slowly got to my feet and made my way over to the window. After pushing everyone out of the way I saw two small children running around the front yard while a pair of long tanned legs stretched as the woman reached in to grab something out of the UHaul. The rest of her body came into view and I heard the guys groaning behind me.

We watched her for several minutes as she'd take boxes into the house and come back for more. It didn't take me long to realize that no one was helping her and I couldn't help but wonder how she was going to get any furniture inside without someone to help her carry it.

Turning on my heel I pushed through the guys again and made my way outside. Thankfully I remembered to grab my sunglasses and quickly put them on.

The two kids were squealing with delight as they ran around in the grass. Neither of them seemed to notice me as I made way over to the back of the UHaul.

"Uh, hi." I said softly so I wouldn't scare her.

"Hi." She smiled.

"Did you need any help?"

"Well.."

I smiled. "I'm Brian by the way. Brian Haner Jr."

"Jenna but everyone calls me Jen." She said and I noticed she kept glancing at the kids.

I followed her gaze and couldn't help but notice all the guys heads practically glued to my front window.

"So Brian I'm guessing you live around here?" Jen asked as I helped her carry some boxes inside.

"Next door actually."

"I hope I'm not keeping you from anything. It looks like you're having a party."

I shook my head. "Nah. My friends are over but they come over all the time."

She simply nodded as we headed back outside to get more boxes. There weren't very many left.

"So uh.. are you from California?" I asked not really knowing what else to say.

She nodded and placed the last box down with the rest of them in the foyer. "Originally yeah. I just moved back from New York."

"New York? What the hell were you doing in New York?" I asked and immediately regretted it. It wasn't any of my business where she had lived. I was acting as if I had known her for years.

"Going to school actually." She said before moving around me to go outside. "Hannah! Tyler! Come here please."

I watched as her kids ran inside and straight into what I guessed was the kitchen. Jen got them something to drink before all three of them stepped in front of me.

"Hannah, Tyler this is our new neighbor Brian. Can you say hi?"

"Hi Brian." The said in between sips.

"Hi." I smiled with a wave and knelt down in front of them. "It's nice to meet you two. You being good for your Mom?"

"Jen's not Mommy. She's my sister." Hannah said quietly.

There were a million questions running through my head that I wanted to ask but it really wasn't any of my business. Jen told them to go play and I watched as they ran off.

"Um I should probably get going but uh you're more than welcome to come over if you'd like."

She nodded. "Thanks for the help Brian."

I nodded once and left. The second I walked in the house the guys started bombarding me with questions. After five minutes of ignoring them they left me alone and went back to staring out in the window in hopes of catching a glimpse of Jen again. I was hoping she could find time to come over. I really wanted to talk to her again and get to know her better. There was just something about her that was already pulling me in.

And I liked it.

-Jen's POV-

I was a bit disappointed when Brian left but I guess I could understand. He did have company after all. Going into the living room I smiled as I watched Hannah and Tyler playing with their toys. I knew my life was never going to be the same and neither would theirs.

A few months ago my life was great. I was going to college and preparing for my dream carrier but that all changed when I got the call. My adopted parents had been killed by a drunk driver. I immediately flew home and was faced with the reality that I was now responsible for twins. Five year old twins to be exact.

I planned two funerals with my college money. I was forced to drop out and move back to California. I was left a decent amount of money was told in their will to use it to buy a house. A place to raise my younger siblings and that's exactly what I did.

I found out when I was ten that I was adopted. They had been trying to have a baby and were later told they'd never be able to have children. Even though they were devasted they knew they wanted a family. That's when they got me.

When I was fifteen my mother found out she was pregnant. She was in her late thirties but didn't care. She'd always wanted to give birth. Nine months later Hannah and Tyler were born. I loved them but was always jealous of the bond they shared. It was something I had never experienced with anyone and probably never would.

I didn't know who my real parents are and I was okay with that. They clearly didn't want me so why should I want them?

Going back into the foyer I began to take boxes into certain rooms. There was more clothes and toys than anything. I didn't even have any furniture other than the beds that were at my parents house. I needed a job and soon.

I had an interview for a job here in Huntington Beach. It was in the field I had been going to school for. Since I would never be getting my degree I doubted that they would hire me. I would take any job I could get. I just needed the money.

The twins continued to play as I worked my ass off to get the boxes unpacked. As I was putting things away in the kitchen I realized we had no food and I didn't have the money to go shopping. I then remembered Brian's offer to come over but I wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Should I really take my five year old siblings to someone's house who I didn't even know.

I sighed and decided that I had no other choice. It was either take them or starve.

"Tyler! Hannah! Let's go get some food!"
