Who Wouldn't Want To Be Me

Chapter 44

I woke up when Steve knocked on the bedroom door, telling me that Shelly had made breakfast, and to not worry about showering or getting dressed first. The kids were up for school and were more than excited that I was still over. I pulled a bunny hug on over top of the tank top that Shelly had lent me, and hoped that the sweatpants weren’t too ratty for breakfast. I followed him down the hall and to the dining table, nearly being mauled by the kids as I made my way towards the table. I couldn’t help but smile as the kids made me sit between them, and then argued over who got to sit beside me. Shelly and Steve just smiled; setting out the syrup, ketchup, and then finally the finished pancakes and bacon.

“Cam, can you stay overnight more often?” Mike asked.

“Why’s that?” I asked after swallowing my mouthful of pancake.

“Because when you stay we get pancakes and bacon and eggs for breakfast and when you don’t we have to eat cereal,” he told me, wrinkling up his little nose, and looking like his dad even more than he already did.

“Oh,” I chuckled, while Steve and Shelly both looked like they wished he’d keep his mouth quiet about these sort of things. He was so darn cute, I couldn’t help but smile.

“Nah it’s fine guys,” I assured them, and then helped the kids get ready for school before walking out to the end of the driveway with them to wait for the school bus. Thankfully Steve had lent me one of his Penguins ball caps to put on over my hair so to the neighbors it wouldn’t look like I hadn’t had a shower yet. All of the kids who were already on the bus had their faces pressed to the glass trying to get a look at me as the bus pulled up. I managed to sustain a chuckle, as all the kids insisted on getting a hug from me before they got on and took their seats. I gave them a little wave, which they all enthusiastically returned as the bus pulled away, and I headed back inside.

“All right; grab your clothes and get your butt over to your place; I’ll be there in an hour to pick you up to go and work out,” Steve told me, and I nodded, grabbing my clothes from yesterday and giving both of them hugs.

“Thank you so much,” they both shrugged it off again, Steve pressing a kiss to my forehead before I was out the door.
