I had never been at Zack’s house much past eight o’clock, but that night was looking to be the first. By the time I finished my paper and other remaining homework, it was nearly 7:30. I knew I could manage to make myself look presentable in only half an hour, but my stomach was in complete knots.
I lucked out in one aspect: my parents. At about six my mom came in to tell me she was leaving to meet dad for dinner, as if I had already known. Maybe she told me a couple of days ago and I just wasn’t listening, but whatever the reason was, I just smiled and nodded.
Usually I would have just let myself into Zack’s condo with the key he gave me months ago, but tonight the key decided to be extra-aggravating, and just wouldn’t seem to turn the lock. With a sigh I rang the doorbell and waited for Zack to let me in. He was visibly confused to see me standing there. “Why didn’t you just come inside?” Asked Zack, closing the door behind me.
“The key wasn’t working,” I replied. “It always gives me trouble.”
“I’ll fix it for you,” promised Zack, and I smiled.
“That’d be nice,” I replied softly before Zack led me back into his living room.
I settled down on the sofa and it wasn’t even two seconds before Zack pulled me against his side. I grinned sheepishly but allowed it to happen. “So I was thinking we could watch a movie,” Zack suggested, “maybe make some popcorn.”
“Sounds perfect to me,” I agreed. I wondered how long we would spend watching the movie, and my stomach twisted at the mere thought of it. We spent the next couple of minutes flipping through Zack’s DVR and Netflix, arguing about what movie to pick. I finally relented and allowed Zack to pick some indie-horror film he loved, and even though I did enjoy horror movies, this one just looked stupid. But I didn’t say anything. We made a bowl of microwavable popcorn and settled once more into the sofa. With the lights off and a scratchy blanket covering our legs, the movie began. And yeah, for a while I was able to get into it. It had kind of a dumb plot and the acting was subpar, but it was hard to focus on anything but Zack’s arm around my shoulders.
We were watching for maybe thirty-five minutes before I couldn’t take it anymore. I was going to initiate something, even if it killed me. I moved slightly and when Zack glanced down at me, I took that it as an opportunity to connect our lips. Zack didn’t protest – far from it. The movie was forgotten as things got heated, and I found myself in a similar position from a couple hours ago: Zack hovering over me, his lips attached to any patch of exposed skin. We continued for a couple more minutes, until I froze, a noise that wasn’t from the movie coming to my ears. “Zack,” I whispered, trying to catch his attention. His hand was up my shirt mapping out new territory, but he silenced me by putting his lips back to mine. I pulled back when I heard the noise again – someone was knocking on his door. “Zack, someone’s outside…” He paused long enough to hear the third knock – impatient and urgent.
“Let’s just ignore ‘em,” responded Zack, continuing to move his hand around my chest. “They’ll go away eventually.” I opened my mouth to respond, but a fourth knock sounded through the house, and this one sounded even angrier than the previous. “Fuck,” he said against my collarbone, and I swallowed heavily. With slow movements Zack pulled himself up off of me and helped me off the couch. He chuckled as I fixed my bra before wandering to the front door. I stayed a bit behind, assuming it was one of his friends stopping by unexpectedly.
“Took you long enough to answer the door,” a voice dryly said, and I froze. I knew that voice. I knew her voice, I knew her bitchy remarks and I knew her moans. And I could see from over Zack’s shoulder that Sadie was standing there, trying to push her way into the house but finding it difficult to get past Zack. We made eye contact for a second, and she frowned. “Oh, you’re here,” she remarked coldly. I didn’t respond.
“Don’t talk to her, Sadie. What do you want?” Snapped Zack, stepping aside so she could enter the house, but he didn’t let her go any further.
“Just my clothes,” replied Sadie innocently.
“Fine,” Zack said. “Go get them. I haven’t moved anything.”
Sadie didn’t say anything, instead showed herself up to Zack’s room. When she was out of sight Zack walked towards me and pulled me against his chest. “I’m sorry, Riley. I had no idea she was going to show up.”
“I understand,” I quickly replied. “I’m just upset that she interrupted us.”
I could feel the rumble of Zack’s laugh with my head pressed against his chest. “Yeah? You’re upset that she interrupted us when I had my hand up your shirt?” I could feel a blush rising up my neck, and I tried to stutter out a response, but Zack cut me off. “It’s such a shame she had to come when she did,” he whispered lowly, “because I was just about to put my hand down to your –“
“Zack!” Sadie called from upstairs. And just like that, the moment was ruined.
“What!?” Yelled Zack in response, and he released me slightly from his hold.
Sadie was quick to respond, “Where did you put my favorite blue sweater?” Zack huffed and made his way upstairs. I wasn’t sure if I should follow not, but I did anyways, though I stood silently in the door of his bedroom, and not an inch further. “I left it in the top drawer,” she explained, motioning to the said drawer, “but it’s not there.”
“I haven’t touched anything,” he responded, lifting up a couple plain t-shirts in the top drawer to see if her sweater was under them. “You probably took it home with you a couple weeks ago.”
I watched as Sadie rolled her eyes. “Whatever, Zack,” she muttered, opening a second drawer and combing through its contents. “Can I have a laundry bag, or something? I don’t think all of my things are going to fit in my purse.” Wordlessly, Zack complied.
“Keep it,” he grumbled as she began to shove her clothes in the bottom. When Sadie had finally finished pulling her things from Zack’s closet she walked towards me, her face completely expressionless. She stood silent in front of me for a second, before she smiled.
“Good luck,” Sadie said, a small, yet clear, sarcastic tone in her voice. I moved away so she could leave Zack’s bedroom, and watched silently as Zack showed her out the door. I walked myself down to the sofa where I proceeded to pull the blanket over my legs. I heard the door close. Zack came into the living room also and soundlessly turned the TV back on. In silence, we finished the movie.
