Forever Hold My Heart

Men just don't understand shoes

"How much time do I have to get ready?" I said and my stomach rudely interrupted.
"Enough and what did you eat today?" Mathew asked and I blushed.
"Nothing," I said softly
"Well then, go start getting ready I'll bring you something to eat." he said
"See you guys in a bit and thank you again," I said directing the last part to Marcus.
"No problem," he said and I walked off. I was walking to the room. When I got there it was empty and the beds were all made. It didn't even look like Julian or the other guy had been here. I rummaged through my things and picked out a dress. I was looking through my shoes and found my beige heels they were perfect. I looked up and saw Travis walk in with a bag.
"Hey," I said pulling out my flat iron.
"hey Katelyn," He said standing next to me.
"What are you up too." I asked
"Well we know you did good today, but because you did good we have to take away something that might have a negative effect on you. If it were to happen again." he said I immediately thought of my phone but I didn't make a move to reach for it. "I'm sorry Katelyn but Mathew thinks that if you waltz around in heels you won't be able to run and jump over walls efficiently enough."
"Oh my heels," I said and it sunk in, "No my heels."
He reached over for my suitcase that had all my shoes and started putting my heels in the bag.
"Don't scuff them," I said and he nodded. He had grabbed the last pair in my suitcase then he looked at me.
"I need those too." he said looking at the beige pair of heels in my hand.
"No I need these. Can't I just wear them this one last time. I can run in heels you've guys have obviously never been to a prom before," I said holding them behind my back.
"Can you run in them without scuffing them," he smiled
"That is beside the point. I know when it comes down to it I'll take them off or something." I said
"But those few seconds it takes you to take them off could make a huge difference," Travis said reaching out his hand. I hesitated but brought my heels out from behind. I closed my eyes as he was about to take them away.
"Wait," I said pulling them back again. "If I give you my heels then you have to promise me one thing."
"Depends on what it is." he said
"I get to go back home to get my other shoes," I said with a smile
"No," he said trying to reach behind me.
"That's not fair." I said running behind a bunk bed.
"Don't play these games with me," he said taking a steps towards me.
"Okay another compromise then. Take me shoe shopping and I'll make sure you get to approve them." I said just before he snatched the heels from me.
"Fine but I don't know when we'll take you." he said right next to me. Either his ability was super speed or everyone was going to be trained to be just as fast.
"Alright," I said and I saw Mathew come in with a tray of food. On the tray he had brought me a sandwich, some side salad, soup, a plum, and a water bottle. "Thank you."
"I'll be in my office, when you're ready." he said and he left. I set the tray down on my bed. I looked at Travis who was tying the bag shut.
"Can I ask you for a favor." I said looking at Travis and he nodded his head once."
"I want to take a quick shower but I don't want any guys walking in on me so..." I paused feeling a bit embarrassed. "Can you not let anyone in while I'm there."
"Okay but just this once." he said I quickly grabbed everything I was going to wear. We walked to the showers. When I walked in no one was there, I quickly took off my things and put my hair in a bun. I only really needed to wash my body. I was careful enough to not have gotten my gauze soaked. When I was done. I slipped on my dress and let my hair down. I hadn't picked out my shoes yet so I decided to go bare foot out.
When I walked out Travis looked at my feet.
"Thank you," I said and I started walking back, I looked back and he was walking the other way.
When I reached the room I plugged in my flat iron and begin to eat while I was waiting. The food was decent, but who complains when they're starving. I started straightening my hair, it was strange how things were changing so fast. I thought it was weird, how I just accepted this. Well technically I haven't fully accepted it. I mean how could I accept something I didn't understand, and plus they were only trying to help me if I wanted to get technical about it.
I was already working on my bangs when I saw Travis walk back in.
"Leah's okay now her doctor said that she was losing a lot of blood and thankfully you guys all had good timing." he said
"Well that's good to hear," I said finishing up my bangs. He sat on my bed and just watched me. "What's your special ability,"
He stared at me for a moment as I began to put on my make up.
"You'll see for yourself during training," he said
"Oh come on just tell me," I said
"patience is a virtue," he said
"Is teaching me patience going to be part my training too," I joked
"Yes it is but we're not on that part yet." he said and I just stared at him with a blank face.
"Okay..." I said and I put on my watch and looked for some shoes. "You know I could have been ready by now but now I have to find the right pair of-- perfect."
I said pulling out a pair of flats I had. I slipped them on and stood up.
"You must cost your mother a fortune," he said eyeing up all my things.
"Actually no I don't. I'll let you know I am the queen when it comes to bargaining and finding a good deal." I said with a smile
"And what exactly is a bargain. A pair of heels for fifty bucks." he said
"I'm offended," I said taking a seat next to him and putting lotion on my legs. "You see this dress, I bought it for 7 bucks. These shoes I got them for 5 bucks, this watch well it was a gift, and my earrings got them free with a purchase of other things. The only thing that I do pay close to full price is my make up but I hardly ever buy it since I don't wear it a lot."
"I don't know why you buy it at all, you don't even need it," he said
"Thank you but It just gives me a certain look," I said and I got up.
"Have fun," he said with smug smile.
"You're not coming?" I asked.
"Nope, I have things to do here," He smiled.
"What could be more important than royals?" I asked
"Preparing your training," he said with a more goofier smile and I just looked at him and walked away.
"See you later." I said and I just heard him chuckle. I walked out into the hallway and started making my way over to Mathew's office. I could hear voices but I knew it was rude to eavesdrop so I knocked. Mathew opened the door he had a stern look on his face but it changed. He eyed me up with a poker face. I did the same except I realized he was wearing dark blue jeans and a button up shirt. Was I over dressed? I brushed the thought out of my mind.
"I'm ready," I said and he was still looking at my outfit.
"She looks fine," Marcus said walking up to us.
"I don't know," Mathew said.
"What's wrong?" I asked
"He's afraid they won't take you serious," Marcus said
"Oh because..." I trailed off
"Because you look too nice," Marcus said
"Well let's just forget about it for now," Mathew said and we walked down out of the building and to some gates. Once we left the gates there was a parking lot. You know for this being a different world they kept up with modern day things. I don't even want to know how they got this stuff over here, or maybe they made them just like we did. We walked over to silver 2009 Honda Civic, nice car if I must say so myself.
I sat in the back while Mathew drove and Marcus took passenger side.
"When we get there try not to talk too much, if anything try not to talk at all," Mathew said
"Oh," I paused, "Okay."
I started to feel nervous I didn't know what kind of people we were dealing with.
"It's just I don't want them to get the bad impression of you," Mathew continued.
"Well I always give good first impressions," I smiled.
"It's different for a Custos," Marcus said. "We're fighters and we don't care much for our image. If you know what I mean."
"Well then they're just going to have to get used to it. At my high school I won best dressed." I said with so much pride in that statement. Marcus smiled and he shook his head
"You didn't win it fair and square," he said
"Of course, I did." I said
"Did you ask people to vote for you?" he said
"Yeah but," I was interrupted
"Then there you go you didn't win because you asked them. That's another thing about Custos when we focus enough we can get what we want. For example like getting someone to vote for us." he said but my smile never faltered.
"No wonder everyone was so reluctant to vote for me as Parent Approved," I paused, "But I wasn't the one who asked them to vote for me as Best Dressed that just happened on its own. Plus I didn't even win Parent Approved."
"I guess," he said
"Pffft you can take away my heels but you can't take away my pride." I said and I heard Mathew Chuckle. Then I realized we were stopped at a gate, when the gates opened I saw a mansion. "And you said I was overdressed."
I barely whispered it, this was amazing. I had seen mansions before but I was excited that I was going to actually go into one and not a virtual tour. When we got out the car I saw some guys standing at the door. I looked at their wrist and surely enough they were Custos.
"How many royals live here," I whispered to Marcus.
"Now is not the time to be asking questions." He said and his lips barely even moved.
We walked inside I was too preoccupied at admiring the place it had double stair cases. I don't think I wanted to leave this place. How come camp wasn't this prestigious! We followed another man, it was strange how the guys never really seemed to communicate with each other. We were standing in front of two double doors when Marcus gave me a look. I looked at him back confused and the man opened the doors, we walked in. There was an older man he had his hair brushed back. His hair was thinning and you could see streaks of white. He had on a suit, to me he looked like a business man. Next to him stood another man he was fit, and he had a hard cold stare. He had on black slacks and a black shirt. I looked down he had a well defined tattoo. This custos was bonded to this man, it didn't have to take a genius to figure this out.
"Mathew, it's good to see you again." The man said with a smile.
"It's Nice to see you too Jonathon," Mathew said he sounded so serious but then again this was a serious matter.
"I must give my thanks to you Marcus for saving my little Leah, and I see you've brought along your Periculum I presume."
I held back a smile, if he wanted me to be a royal by all means I wasn't going to deny it. Hell, pull me out a chair and a hot masseuse.
"Jonathon this is Katelyn she's another addition to the Custos," Mathew explained and I smiled at Jonathon.
"Oh so the rumors are true then," Jonathon said I held my head up with pride.
"She's the one that located where Leah was at." he said
"Oh she did?" he asked a little confused, "Are you sure?"
I was offended, deeply offended.
"Yeah she heard Leah's call from a long distance," he said.
"She hasn't bonded with anyone yet?" he asked and he glanced at my wrist.
"No but we aren't trying to bond her with anyone yet," Mathew said
"Well maybe you should," he said.
"We've already considered it, but we've decided against it." Mathew said. I just stood there glancing back and forth between the two. We heard a knock on the door.
"Come in," Jonathon said and a women walked I was just about to make eye contact with her but Mathew grabbed my arm and pulled me behind him.
"I thought we agreed to no unbounded royals." Mathew said.
"My apologies," He said with a smile. "What can I help you with?"
"Leah would like to see the girl that saved her." she said
"Okay, " he said and the women walked away. I knew I wasn't suppose to look at her but I glanced and we met eyes for a split second. The women looked old enough to be the wife, she had hazel eyes. I looked down at my wrist everything was still normal. That was a close call, I looked and Marcus was glaring at me. I gave him a weak smile. I zoned out I wasn't paying attention anymore. I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom for me and you. The song started playing in my head. All I needed was a fire place or something.
I was brought back to reality when Marcus grabbed my elbow and started guiding me out the room. We walked back to the entry way but started going up the stairs. I tried to shake his grip off me but he only grabbed on tighter. We walked up to a door and the man knocked. Then the door opened and we walked in. This was definitely a girls room I saw Leah laying down on her bed. She had a heartbeat monitor and other things. She was asleep though, I looked around and I saw a boy staring out the window. The boy had black hair neatly trimmed but it still had a messy look to it.
"She just fell asleep," he said not taking his eyes off the window.
"You're not supposed to be here," Mathew said and Marcus put his hand over my eyes. I frowned was this all really necessary.
"I'm sorry, she asked me not to leave," he said and I could hear him walk over to us. "For once the rumors are true."
I could tell he was standing in front of us. I tensed up when I felt someone grab my hand, I was about to pull back when I felt someone kiss my hand.
"Thank you for saving my sister," he said and I blushed, I slightly nodded at a loss for words.
"We'll be leaving now," I heard Mathew say and I was guided out the room. I was waiting for Marcus to let me see but he didn't. Even after I almost fell down the stairs, I was getting upset with him I wasn't a doll or anything. I heard a door opened and we continued to walk. I heard a car door open when I was pushed in I sat up and glared at Marcus. He was seriously bipolar he needed to see a therapist. They both got in the car and it was silent.
"Well that was fun," I said sarcastically.
"Now is not the time," Mathew said and I looked down and rolled my eyes. I felt like with time I was developing more questions than answers. I opened my mouth to ask a question.
"Not even for questions," Marcus said I just closed my mouth and leaned my head on the palm of my hand. I wonder what nonsense training Travis was going to provide for me. He did seem like a reasonable type of guy but then I thought Marcus was a nice kind of guy. So then Travis might be an unreasonable trainer, who knows.
Mathew pulled into the parking lot. We got out and we walked in silence.
"We need to talk," Mathew said glancing back at me, I just nodded. When we entered the building we walked straight to his office. I took a seat and so did they. "First off let's talk about your choice of clothes."
"Today was just a special occasion," I said in defense, "Even though it wasn't what I expected it to be."
"I'm talking about future outfits. I don't want your shorts being too short." he started but I interrupted.
"You might as well just call me a slut," I threw my hands out in front of me. "You might as well inspect every shoe and outfit I have."
"That's actually not a bad idea," He looked at Marcus, "Go bring me her suitcases."
"I was just kidding." I said appalled
"Well now you know you should be careful with what you say," he said
"Right well laughs on me, I've learned my lesson. I'm just going to go find Travis and get to work." I said getting up.
"Sit down Katelyn," he said and I did as I was told. Marcus came back with my things. "Alright whatever I put in this pile is a no," He said pointing to my right, "This pile will be my yes."
He started pulling out my clothes, my jeans went into the yes pile. He would hesitate on some of my shorts but they did go in the yes pile then I saw his eyebrow go up.
"I've been pretty lenient so far but now way am I going to let you wear these," he said pulling out a pair of my boy shorts. I snatched them from his hand I could feel my whole entire face turn red.
"Those were my underwear." I said and he looked embarrassed.
"Oh I'm sorry about that," he said I looked at Marcus and he was trying to hold back a laugh. "Let's move on to your shoes."
"Well I'll leave all the yes's in here and the no's will go into my no pile." he said and before I knew it a whole bunch my shoes were in the no pile. All of my flats and sandals were in the no pile.
"You take away my heels, my sandal, and my flats." I said getting a bit angry, "What else are you going to take from me."
I saw him glance at my feet. I didn't even wait for him to say anything I just took off my shoes and tossed them in the no pile.
"You guys owe me shoes," I said and I walked out of the office. I walked back into my room and just dropped down on my bed.
"Tough day," I heard someone say I looked up it was Julian
"You have no idea," I said
"I heard you saved a Royal today," he said taking a seat on my bed
"Yeah but because of it Mathew has taken away some of my shoes," I said burying my face in my pillow. I heard him laugh, I turned my head to the side so I was looking at him.
"Things will get better," he said and he placed his hand on my lower back. I raised my eyebrow at him. He still didn't move his hand so I just sat up.
"Do you know where I can find Travis," I asked
"You called," Travis said as he walked in with my suitcases.
"You know what would make me a real happy camper," I said standing up, "If you convinced them to give me back my shoes."
"Sorry but I did tell them that I would take you shopping some other time." he said putting my things down.
"I guess," I said sitting down back on my bed.
"Shouldn't you be down at the longue with the others," Travis said looking at Julian. Julian didn't even say anything he just got up and left.
"What's at the longue?" I asked opening my suitcase and looking for some shoes.
"All students go to hang out," Travis said nonchalantly.
"Cool let me just get dressed and we'll go hang out," I said and he laughed
"Let me just make myself clear, no." he said
"Oh then what are we going to do," I said
"Training, so get changed, meet us at field #4" he started walking away. I thought about it, he said 'we' that's more than just him. I changed and I took off my makeup. I pulled my hair into a ponytail and walked towards the field. I hesitated by the door I tried to see if anyone was out there but I couldn't see anyone. I opened the doors and walked out to the field. I didn't see anyone so I looked at the top of the door. I definitely was in the right field, maybe I was early....
I just stood there, this was awkward for me at least. Thats when an arrow almost hit me, barely missing my cheek. I started to run, I wasn't running super fast like earlier but I was running none the less. another arrow almost hit me again. I started to run toward the longue which wasn't a walking distance. I knew whoever was shooting arrows was expecting me to run in a straight line so I randomly ran to the left and I felt something hit my leg causing me to fall.
"Holy shit," I said I tried to get up but I could feel it pinching my muscles so I did something I didn't know I was capable of. I put both hand on the arrow and pulled it out. I let out a cry but as soon as I got it out I got back up and started running again. I saw the longue doors and as soon as I was about to reach them someone tackled me. I tried to fight him off but he pinned me down.
"Katelyn," Travis said and I stopped fighting him. Then I kicked him off, and I stood up. "It's okay we were just trying to test you."
I saw Marcus running over he had his bow n' arrows.
"Why the hell did you take a left," he said. He shot me and he still had the guts to blame me, I was going to kill him. I took a step toward him but I found myself having an attack. I dropped to my knees I couldn't breathe. I had to fight it off I was literally fighting myself I gripped my neck willing myself to breathe. I started to cough up blood, I tried to stand up. I fell down and I was fighting to stay conscious but I blacked out..... again.
