Adoption Agency

Chapter 4

I thought I could jump for joy. My sister got adopted and she gets to live with her best friends still. They will probably share custody of her with me. I can keep my promise to her and our parents. I stood there with an insanely giddy grin until I felt arms wrap around my waist. I tried to turn but they didn’t let go. Who the hell is here?! At this time?! Its three in the morning! Wait. “I’ll explain that part when I see you” Aleha! My suspicions were confirmed when she spoke in barely a whisper,”I’m free. Big brother, I can finally leave that place.” “I know, congrats kid.” I tried to calm myself from all the overwhelming joy I felt. Then she started sobbing uncontrollably. All thoughts of happiness vanished. I peeled her arms off quickly and turned around to pick her up. I sat down with my back against the wall, her face buried in my shirt, still sobbing. “what’s wrong kid? I thought you’d be happy. But this exceeds tears of joy, especially for someone so tough. Tell me what’s upsetting you, Aleha. Please.” My sister never cried, not even when she realized our parents were never coming back. Some may say she was just too young. But her whole life, she remained strong. Even when we were separated, she never cried, often got a little clingy, but never cried. So it really has me worried what happened if she’s this upset. I thought I was prepared but nothing could ever get me ready for what she told me that night. “but, I can’t, I don’t want you to hate me.” Then she sobbed even harder. This shattered me. How could she ever think that? I’ve been fighting ten years just to get her back. Nothing could make me hate my little sister. “where did you get that from? That’ll never happen. But please spare your big brother the insanity of wondering why his tough as nails little sister is crying like little kid lost in the store?” and she laughed,” hmph maybe I don’t want to. Maybe I’ll just let you go insane.” She tried to smile but it didn’t reach her eyes. She’s trying(and failing) to hide it, but she’s really scared this time. “ well, then you’re screwed because all your novels that you’re writing or have written are at home. And being insane, I might just rip them all up in a psychotic episode.” I was joking, but that seemed to freak her out. Oh well, better that than her sobbing. “ you wouldn’t dare!” if eyes could kill, this look would be a lethal weapon. “ you’re right. I value my life too much to cross someone like you.” This made her sob again, even harder at that. “ hey Aleha, kid, seriously what’s wrong. We were just messing around. It’s not like you’re a serial killer or something, right?” she only sobbed harder. No, No way! My sister isn’t like that. There’s no way someone so sweet and innocent could ever do something so cruel and malicious. “Aleha tell me exactly what happened while you were at the orphanage.” I hated it, but I had to be the demanding, harsh guy if I wanted to snap her out of this and have her explain. That being said, I couldn’t help cradling her like she’s my little girl, so I’m not sure my tone stood for much. But, in retrospect, she basically was kidnapped so I think my actions are understandable. After all, you try not to get all mushy after you lose your parents and then your five year old sister is taken from you and held captive for ten years. “O-ok. But first, promise you w-won’t ha-hate me, you can sh-shun me but d-don’t hate m-me b-big brother.” “Never.” She looked up at me and smiled. She tried to move off my lap but I held tight. She laughed,” miss me, Abberline?” I could hear the smirk clear in her voice. “ more then you’ll ever know. Nice to see you’ve still got that attitude of yours, eh little one?” “that I do, Abby.” I scowled at the nickname. “ whatever, now explain little sis.” I finally let her go and sat her down beside me. Wish I’d known the story she’d tell me would put her right back where she was, so it was pointless. Wish I’d just known more of the story to begin with.

“ well it all started ten years ago. When I was first taken to the orphanage I was placed in a room with four other kids.” “your now best friends.” “ right. Anyway, it was dead silent in that room for a while. Then the lady who brought us here came back. She called the only other girl in that room first. She had blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She asked her what her name was. The little blonde girl squeaked out that her name was Nina. Nina was then taken to another room with the lady. She didn’t come back for two hours. She smelt funny too. You are number 37, the lady barked at Nina. Then she called one of the boys over. The one with blood red hair and silver eyes. She asked him the same question he said his name was Roman. She then took him with her just like she did Nina. Only, Roman came back in only one hour. 38, she called to him. Then, she called the next boy, the one with black hair and chocolate eyes. This was a different case though. The boy had no name to give her when she asked. So she asked him what his favorite thing was. He told her he loved fire. So she told him his name would now be Arson. She did not take him into the other room, only told him that he was 39. Then she called for the last boy, this boy was platinum blonde with forest green eyes. He also had no name to give her when she asked. She gave him the same question as Arson. He told her that he loved to act. She told him he would be called Lethal and that he was 40. Then she looked to me. And do you have a name, she asked sweetly. I didn’t yet know why, but I hated her from that moment on. Aleha, I snapped at her. Everyone else looked at me shocked at my cold tone. But, that lady, just smiled at me. Her smile looked fake as crap as she asked or forced me to follow her to the next room. She locked the doors and and closed the blinds. Then she started to chant in a foreign language. laqueum positum. About your cecidit domus, iam non es mussitant. per sacra legit, velcantu, i dederit vobis placuerit vita i. volo manere donec IMMOBILIS nec minus petit hunclocum tibi demere amess I later learned it was latin. It was not perfectly fluent but in English it went like this, the trap has been set. About your fallen family, you're no longer to fret. by way of naming or sacred chant, the life i choose unto you i shall grant. to remain until an unwavering wish and no less, seeks to relieve you of this place so amess. The lady then dumped dirt and water into the pot in the corner and set fire to it. It seemed to be a makeshift mix of the four elements. She then repeated the chant only she put my name into it and added she and her where it was appropriate. Then she dumped that disgusting concoction all over me after that. I made to wipe it off but it wasn’t there. I could feel it but I couldn’t see it. It made me cough three times exactly. But then I couldn’t even cough. I couldn’t do anything. I wasn’t able to even move until she said return to your room now, 41. I just walked out of the room. Once I got out there I wanted to just run away and go find you.” “ why didn’t you?” “ I tried, believe me, but I literally couldn’t. my body was only able to move in the direction she ordered me to go. I was only able to go and sit where I was previously in that room. We sat in the row we were in when we first got there. Nobody talked, nobody even moved. We sat in silence and perfectly still. Then the lady came back she told us you have all been given you numbers and that is what you will be referred to as. You are to live here and not to leave without an escort unless you are ordered. I have bound you to be workers until you are adopted by someone who has no substantial doubt about it. Until then you will be educated here in this facility by the best possible tutors. You will learn several foreign languages and far exceed your peers in academics. You will also be made superior in all things physical education. In return, you will follow my orders when given. Any disobedience will result in severe punishment and possible death. With that said, other than your work, education, and boundaries, you are free to do what you want so long as it is not otherwise specified against. Now, go explore and learn the grounds. I will not be standing around waiting to give you directions when I ask you to go somewhere or fetch something. Now get to it, leave no room unexplored. For today there are no boundaries. Knock on the upstairs doors as they are the residential rooms. Do not linger past your welcome in those rooms. Start with the bottom floor which is this one. Make sure you know every last detail and repeat the process with the second and third floors. When finished go to your numbered rooms. Your meal will be there waiting for you. MOVE! We didn’t wait to be told twice. We decided to look together but split up which rooms to remember. I was to remember all of the first floor details and then they would split up the upstairs floors. You would only remember the basics for the other parts of the house. I learned everything down to last corner of the bottom floor. I remembered everything that I knew, somehow, she would want us to know. I also learned a few things she probably wouldn’t want us to. I started to get a headache as I looked at the details meant to be overlooked. It grew worse as I found every hidden door or microscopic camera. I found several in the room where she cursed Nina and I. we finished our little tour and went to our rooms as ordered. I found several more cameras in my room. My headache got worse.” I was starting to get dizzy as I continued my story. Even if the curse is now gone, it still lingers and tries to prevent me from talking with an unbearable migraine. I had only a little time to finish my story before I blacked out. “ Aleha, are you okay. You look like you’re in pain.” He touched his hand to my forehead. “ you’re burning up!” “i know. Like I said, I get a headache whenever I disobey under the curse. I am adopted so it has been lifted but the remanants remaining are trying to prevent me from revealing the true agenda of the witch. Please, believe me when I say she is not human and she has cursed me to do her bidding as well as many other kids over the ten years I have been there. Let me know you believe me before I tell you what she used her curse to make us into.” This story really seemed to be impossible. But I trust my sister, and her headache and fever are unmistakably from after she started explaining. “ I believe you, continue.” She took a deep breath and picked her story from where she left off. “ the witch has social workers and cops, including those who took me, on her side. The staff at the orphanage was also on her side. All except Lindy. Now you understand I was forced to do her bidding correct?” “mhm, go on.” “ well, the witch has many people she doesn’t like. She wishes to exterminate them. Now as to whether she can’t or she doesn’t feel like it, I cannot be certain.” I gulped, begging my nagging suspicions to be wrong. If I’m right then, oh god. She was just a kid, she still is. “ she made us her a-a” she couldn’t speak as she clutched her head in unbearable pain. “Aleha!” I tried to help but all I could do was pull her to me and rub her head. She was tearing up from the migraine. “a-as-asass- asassins.” And then she fainted in my arms.

“Aleha. Aleha, don’t do this. Aleha. Aleha!” but she wouldn’t wake up. She wasn’t burning up so much anymore, so I think her headache might be getting better. But, she wouldn’t wake up no matter what I did. I tried talking to her, shaking her, even poured a little of my water bottle I had over her forehead. It was ice cold, but she didn’t even twitch in her sleep. She was barely even breathing. I had no doubts about this curse now, not that I really had many. Just the ones any sane person would have. It was obvious, this wasn’t natural. It’s been an hour now. Or it will be in exactly ten seconds. Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. I felt a shaky hand cup my cheek. I looked down to my lap and see my sister smiling up at me,” you don’t hate me.” I don’t care how unmanly this seems. I lifted my sister, pulled her as close to me as I could, and held her like I would lose her at any second, stifling any useless tears. “ of course I don’t, dummy. Fuck, aleha I thought I lost you. You weren’t moving. You were barely even breathing.” “I’m sorry, Abberline I—“ I pulled back to look at her. I watched the videotapes she had that I found on her cellphone when I checked to see if she contacted her new guardians. I was relieved she told them she was visiting her brother at his office and that she would crash at his house for the night. She also explained why I hadn’t adopted her. Such a good kid. She got them to agree to talk to me about custody when I drop her off tomorrow. I just happened to find the video feeds she’d obviously gotten from the cameras at the orphanage. They showed exactly what she said. How could she apologize for something obviously not her fault? “ don’t apologize! I know it’s not your fault. I saw the videos. They did this to you so don’t apologize.” The tears had stopped trying to fall(we both hate crying) but I still wouldn’t let go of her. Though, she seems to be clinging more than I am right now. “ I should’ve told you sooner. i should have fought better. i'm sorry for that. bitch face fucking won.” this made me upset. "she didn't win. you got out of that hell-hole and you got everyone of your friends out. that's five fucking wins Aleha." "even so, i should have been strong enough to tell you and i should have gotten them out sooner." I sighed, typical Aleha. I absently stroked her hair,” you can never give yourself a break, kid. That’s going to catch up to you one day.” “now explain to me why you lied to your guardians.” She glared, ”why’d you search my phone?” “so I could call someone for help and I was just about to when you woke up. Now, explain.“ she sighed, defeated. “ fine. I did plan to meet up with you so that wasn’t a lie. I just told them it was at somewhere they’d be more comfortable with. Then I took a taxi here. It was a flawless plan. My only issue would be if you didn’t want me to sleepover since I told them you gave me permission.” She looked at me like a lost puppy. “ of course I want you to. It’s your home just as much as mine. But this is the only time I’ll cover for you. I have to agree to their terms and if they think im a bad guardian, I can’t get custody and may even lose rights to see you. Got it?” “yes, sorry Abberline.” “ it’s fine, now let’s get home, I want you to see how awesome I’ve made that old tunnel system.” “ glad to know you still live there. “ “ of course. I didn’t tell you anything about moving, plus that place is a lot better now than any house I’ve ever looked at.” She smiled and got to her feet. She grabbed my hand when I stood and practically dragged me. They weren’t kidding when they said she’d be made top notch in fitness. We got in the car and, after ten long years, I finally drove my sister home.

We were finally home! I’m finally freed from that bitch. And I told him everything, he doesn’t hate me! He’s opening the door to our old house or tunnel system, now. Most people probably think we are crazy or just poor but it’s not like that. For one, all the tunnels add up to that of a 12 story mansion. And it’s free(bar whatever we add to it), at that. Plus, no neighbors to be noisy or complain about my music and—holy shit! That tv used to be a wall! That laptop was not there. None of my room was like this. I looked around, nothing here was as awesome before. I knew my brother had a good job and was making decent cash but damn did he have this place tricked out. I looked to Abberline and apparently my face gave my thoughts away. “like what I’ve done with the place eh, kid?” “yeah, please tell me I’m not imagining and that that tv-wall thing is actually in my room?” “haha, yeah it is, but that’s not just a tv-wall thing.” My brother made his voice all high pitched and squeaky at the end. “well then explain and if you’re going to imitate me then get it right. I so do not talk like that.” “ yeah, sure you don’t” I glared and punched my brother in the arm. He actually looked like that might’ve hurt. Right, I already forgot that the bitch trained us. “ok , no need for the violence. Geesh, what do you bench kid, that one actually stung a little.” I don’t know why but I felt shy admitting it. “3-350.” His eyes nearly popped out of his head. “ there’s no way.” “yeah there is, and I can prove it.” He grabbed my hand and dragged me over to the bench. He set the weights for me and went to spot for me. I lie down and grab the bar. I lifted the bar with minimal struggle and brought it down before pushing it back up. I repeated until I got to ten reps. Then I brought it up, slightly struggling, and set it back in the holder. I sat up and looked at my brother, who was shocked. “Anyone home?” “Abberline?” “Abby?” wow, you’d think I could barely lift a quarter before this or something. I tried the only other thing I could think of. “ I’m pregnant and your best friend Jake is my babydaddy.” That snapped him out of his little daze, though I may have pushed it too far. My brother went from shocked to pure rage. “well he won’t be able have another kid. That bitch is dead. You and him?!! The fuck?!” It was a lie but I couldn’t pass this up. “the fuck, wow, nice choice of words.” The look on his face. “ what do you—oh god, Aleha, mental image!!!”

“try mental dysfunction. I’m not pregnant with Jake’s kid. I haven’t even seen him for the past six months.” Ok, now my brother looked mad at me. Fuck my life, that glare still scares the shit out of me, and I can bench more than he weighs! Yeah, my brother may be strong as shit but he only weighs 170. 6 foot five and he weighs 170. Lucky fucker. And no I’m not obese, chill. I’m 5 foot three and I weigh 117. Anyway as you can guess, I laughed. “you were in la la land when you realized your sister’s not a weakling. I even called you Abby. Geez, thanks for the confidence.” “ well, I’m sorry, my sister who could barely bench 60 pounds before she left comes back looking like your average teenage girl. Excuse me for not knowing she lifts like she is some body builder.” “ok I was five when I left so can it. You ask me, a five year old benching anything is pretty kick ass. Plus you watched the videos, they trained us like kids in boot camp.” “ even still, that’s still odd.” “ whatever now explain my tv that’s not just a tv.” “ fine, but don’t you ever scare me like that again. I thought I had to go kill my best friend.” This brought me back. That one word. All my memories came rushing back. Their bodies lay lifeless on the floor. They have many holes. Blood oozing from every visible one. All were killed and added to the count. Bullets. In between his eyes. One. Through her heart. Two. To their heads. Three and four. Like kids count by twos and threes, count the bodies out, relations mean nothing to me. My neighbor. That business guy. The old granny. Three brothers. Five to ten. The witch ordered and we took them out. By twos by threes, or one by one, we drew out their blood, cursed to do so like it was fun. We saw blood everywhere. It covered the entire area. Nothing. We heard their screams and pleas. Nothing. We saw the fear dancing in their eyes. Nothing. We saw some painted with malice, their being screaming danger. Nothing. We felt nothing. No fear. No guilt. Not a thing. Only when the horrific deed was done, when we saw what we were forced to do. Then our tears could fall, until ordered to return. “a computer.” “ huh?” “ aleha, earth wants you back down now.” “s-sorry, now what were you saying.” “you okay kid?” “yeah, sorry, just a bit overwhelmed, everything’s finally right again.” He smiled, albeit somewhat skeptical. “ So,that tv is a tv but it’s also a computer. There’s also a pen and stuff so you can write and make corrections on work. It’s basically an interactive board, like most schools now have. I figured you’d want it for your writing. So you could see it on a big screen. It helps for me to look over cases too.” “ Holy pineapples, that’s awesome!!!!!!” I gave my brother a huge hug and thanked him. “ sure kid, now just two conditons.” “ok what?” “ first, no porn.” Ick. “ Haha. Now what’s the second condition.” “ you have to play me in xbox. I haven’t had the chance to ever play you in videogames.” “oh, using me so you can finally win a game of COD?” I smirked at my brother, knowing full well he’s undefeated, just to push his buttons. “ you’re on, we’re playing on your live profile though, I’m not letting you reck my stats.” “Think I suck? Fine, let’s make a bet then. If you lose, you have to change your name to PrincessAbby and then invite all your friends to the match.” “fine, but if I win, I get to choose your outfit for tomorrow.” I gulped. Knowing my brother, he’d make me wear a dress. He has good taste so it wouldn’t be ugly but still. I hate dresses. Now I have to win. “fine, anything for the princess.” “now who’s confident, let’s go.”
