Dark Prince

Ash

A sad smile forms at my mouth. She wasn’t at the café. I guess she might after all not show up as I hoped and I’m just wishful thinking here. The girl. The one with the almost white hair, the one with no name. She is like an obsession I can't get over. I couldn’t stop thinking about her. Let me see. The best comparison for this is...like a spell, drawing me to her.

“Comment puis-je vous aider, monsieur?

I look up from my heavy thinking to find an attractive woman with blonde curly hair standing on the other side of the counter. I understood some French, and from what I could understand, she asked how she could help me.

“Oui, Je suis ici pour vous inscrire.” I pause then,

“Parlez-vous anglais? Mon français. . ah. . . n’est pas trop bon.”

Quick translation, I told her yes, and that I was here to volunteer. I then asked her if she knew some English, because my French wasn’t really good. I knew I was learning rather quickly than I should, but that didn’t mean I was fluent in the language, or an expert for that matter.

The woman smiled. “Yes, I do.”

She had a nice accent. Very charming, yet distinguishable and understandable. I took out my left hand from the pocket of my black sweater to give her a handshake.

“Nice to meet you. . .”

“Janelle.” She finishes, flashing her name tag on her nurse uniform with pride.

And I couldn’t help but think, what a remarkable woman. I smile, really smile. I usually faked them, but this one was real. I guess my smile was too weird, because Janelle stares at me for seconds too long.

“Oh right! I almost forgot! Volunteering, right?”

I shrug then nod like its no big deal. She reaches under the table for papers.

“Here are the forms, oh and a pen,” she says slapping the pen on the forms. “You can go take a seat over there if you’d like.” she says as she points to the chair behind me.

“Thank you Janelle.” I give her a wink and a small bow as I head for the chair. As I did so, I couldn’t help but notice her blush. I’ve never felt this way before. I felt dangerous, mysterious, and flirty. And I had to say, I kind of liked it.

That went well. I thought as I sat down on the cushioned seat. I take one glance at the forms to know I’m being watched. I felt odd. And I felt really uneasy. Usually people just glance or avoid looking at all in my direction, so the feeling was quite new to me. I look up to see a beautiful young girl, about sixteen or seventeen, across from the room on the other side of the round island. We locked eyes for just a moment until she quickly looks down at some papers she was supposedly filling out. I kept staring at her of course. Because there was something about her that almost felt like warmth and happiness. Goodness. Oh well. I looked down as soon as Janelle started talking with her. She just a person, I chant.

I finally grasp my thoughts and turn my attention to the forms, instead of the eery feeling she kept giving me.

My birth year was obviously inaccurate. Although I look, and seem like I’m eighteen, I wasn’t. I was more than 500 years old.

I could see it. Janelle either nervously reaching for her phone to call security, laughing uncontrollably, or even running and screaming the opposite direction. I knew one of those was bound to happen if I revealed my age. Not just to Janelle but to everyone else as well. I cant act like it doesn’t bother me, because it does. I can wish it didn’t all I want, but the past is the past. Its done and dusted, and cannot be changed. For so many years, and I’m certain I’ve lost count, I was treated differently.

As for my last name. I shortened it to make it a little bit modern. My last name is actually Sayeton. I remember when all the kingdoms along with the Sayeton kingdom, including my father got along in harmony. Then of course, a war emerged, broke out and killed many. That was a starting point to where I truly resented my father, and how the man he seemed wasn’t the man he actually was.

Nonetheless, I am. . . okay. I’ll get over it. Eventually.

Blackness.

“What are you doing, Acey?”

“Oh, this? Its my newest invention. I call it ‘the Acey.’” She paused as she kept building her machine and adding materials randomly. “I could put your name in there too, if you want?”

“I-”

“On one condition.” She interrupted.

I smiled, knowing Acey, she would always make excuses for me to do things and stay with her longer. She never showed her jealousy, but I knew she was when I would play with my other friends.

“Absolutely, Lady Ace.”

Ace was the nickname I gave her. One, because she was good at everything, like I mentioned before. And also because it really annoyed her.

“Lord Prince, your proposal is to stay with me and finish it. There you will get your credit.” She so sweetly says.

“I would be more than happy to. Honestly, you don’t need to be making up excuses to be with me. I will willingly be by your side. . . Ace.” I kissed her cheek and got to work on her little invention.

She was watching me, I knew this out of the corner of my eye. She would blush, smile and move on. She was my world. The funny thing was, we were only eight years old.

The scene cut off. Janelle was standing above me, peering down worriedly. “You alright, monsieur”?

“Of course I am,” I say slowly. Was I sleeping? I must have dozed off.

“Are you finished your form.” She smiles then.

“Oui.” I say, yawning.

“Merci.” She takes the clipboard of papers, and glances over it, particularly my name since she asked if Ash was my whole name.

“It is.” I lie.

“Okay, Mr. S-”

“Ash is fine.” I immediately say.

I will not be called by my father’s last name.

Janelle looks at me, and gives me a look that asks if I’m sure that I was okay.

I nod, knowing what that look meant. Why wouldn’t I? I’ve been on earth for 500 years.

“I’m just a little tired.” I tell her.

It wasn’t exactly the whole truth. Yes, I was a little tired, but it was more than that. That dream, my memory made me upset. Cold. It shouldn’t have since it was a happy memory, but that’s exactly why, because I cant have that anymore, because Acey is a topic that is way too personal.

“Well, you could start tomorrow if you’d like?”

“I’ll start today if that’s fine with you, Janelle.”

She beams, “Absolutely!” She looks at her clipboard.

“Your on bed pan duty. You will be changing bed sheets. Last position left. Nobody wanted that, so its all yours.”

“Thank you Janelle.”

“No problem, down the hall to your right. . . Ash.” She said, testing waters. I guess she doesn’t like my name. Oh well.

~

I finally changed my last bed, and had it remade. Four hours, doing a good deed. It didn’t feel good though, if anything I thought I would be helping the elderly, or even newborn babies; bathing them. But no. Negative.

Takes time Ashtian. Be patient, by dear.

Okay. I lost it. I hear voices now. But instead, asking who’s there in all those cheesy horror movies, I continue with my life and ignore it. After all, it could have been my imagination, I have been busy all day. Now that I think about it, I didn’t have much to eat today either.

Pathetic me is at it again.

You are not pathetic. The voice roared.

Okay, fine, I’m not. But then I realize I wasn’t even talking, that these are my thoughts.
Mind reader much. I give a mental pout. Just as a test, to see if I’m imagining this voice or not.

Then there’s laughing. That’s when I know the voice is a woman’s voice.
I detect trouble. Hearing voices and laughing inside your head is never good.

Okay, what do you want, woman?

No answer.

Just the way it should me. I smile. And right when I hear that voice again, my smile disappears. I sigh. I do not have time for this.

You’re an oddball. But that's okay.

Show yourself!

What if I don’t want to Prince?

She knows who I am? Not good.

Please?

Okay, since you asked so nicely.

A woman in a white gown, and glowing long white hair, emerges. I gasp, knowing who this woman is, and knowing where I’ve seen her before. She is all too familiar.

The café.
