The Christmas Miracle

two

“Okay class, today I want you to write what you want for Christmas down in your notebooks and after we’re going to share with the class” Mrs. Grayling, my first grade teacher announced. Frowning heavily I open my notebook, it smells like mommy.

All I want is for my mommy to get better

I write numbly feeling the tears sting my eyes, but I will not I cry. You will not cry, you will not cry, I chant over and over again in my head slowly pushing my tears back away. I wonder where tears come from.

“Who wants to go first, Noel?” Mrs. Grayling asks breaking through my thoughts. I don’t want to go, I would rather jump off a cliff; but looking down I quietly mutter “I want my mommy to get better”. There was silence for several seconds, Mrs. Grayling moved on to Julie, tears clear and ringing like a bell in her voice.
