Memories That Fade Like Photographs

Now it tears me apart just to look at the sky

Things were still the way they were for Lucy and Alex after the night of the concert. He would continue to glance at her with that sad and guilty look, but also with a hint of wonders. Thoughts of what he could do to change her mind. What he could do to himself to make her love him once again. They were both hurt by this, that was a given, but he felt worse now because of what she had said in the parking lot that night.

He went back inside the venue and everyone thought he had seen a ghost, but once they noticed the tears they knew what was going on. Kara, for one, was more upset with him. Screaming at him, telling him he was an idiot for doing the things he did that night. Rian calmed her down and told him to go home with Jack. Though Jack seemed on edge with him to. When they pulled up to his drive Alex asked him if he knew if she was in love with someone else. By this, Jack looked at him with shocked eyes and mustered up this whole speech about how they were perfect together and that she’ll always love him, no matter what stupid and fucked up things he does. Alex may have not believed it then, but he seeing that it was coming from Jack, he still had that tiny light of hope left in him.

Lucy became close friends with Lisa after that night. She had told Jack, to which, he was not fond of, but once hanging out with her and Lisa, at Lisa’s place one day, he actually seemed to approve of it and liked that Lisa has moved on from Alex and regrets everything that happened in the beginning.

As time went on Lucy seemed to feel weaker and weaker. She hated the way things were between her and Alex. All she wants is closure, but she wants him to realize that she’s still in love with him, but her mind is set onto a solution that no one would agree with. Deciding on what she’s going to do, she tells Jack and Lisa, both of them are upset, but they agree upon it, knowing they had no say in any of it.

Moving on from that, Jack and Lucy became the ‘it’ couple of the school –even though they weren’t a couple. Rumors went around, but their friendship never changed. Everyone was happy that they were happy together, but everyone knew they weren’t in a serious relationship with each other. They just looked like one to everybody in the school, and Alex. He wasn’t really believing what his friends say because what he sees still hurts him to the point where he just wants to take her out of Jack’s arms and call her his once again. But remembering that Lucy wasn’t a toy that he’d fight over with his brother as a kid, he tried everything to make her jealous, but nothing would work. So he went to his last resort… Lisa.

Behind his back Lisa told Lucy and Jack what was going on and they knew right away what his plans were. Lucy was hurt at first but asked Lisa for a favor, which she agreed upon. So from then on out, Lisa became Alex’s ‘girlfriend’ once again, and even though everyone of their friends were disappointed in his actions. Lucy and Lisa had to pretend to hate each other for that time being until seeing each other after school and apologizing for it all. Jack would simply laugh at the two.

After a few months passing, Prom started to take place in the school’s grape vine. Posters, and pictures. Voting and shopping. Questions and answers. They were everywhere. Everyone was being asked to go and the only thing said was a yes and a shared kiss.

Rian asked Kara at one of their gigs, Zack was asked by Sadie, who wrote it out on his skateboard, Matt and Kendra were going together after he asked her with a minnie mouse doll, and then there was Alex who simply asked Lisa during lunch after making out with her right in front of everyone’s annoyed faces. After he asked, Lisa kept glancing over at Lucy, but since they talked about this ahead of time, she immediately said yes and all Lucy did was roll her eyes and continue her conversation with Jack about what they were going to do later that day.

After a few days though, Lucy started to feel sad because she thought that Jack would have asked her to Prom by now. Every time it was brought up, he would get all nervous and change the subject. She eventually gave up, except one day, as she went to her locker after school, she found a note taped to her locker.

It read:
Lucy, if you want a ride home, you’re going to have to find me. Go to your French class.

After walking all the way to her french class, she saw Madame Cash waiting outside with a bright smile on her face. When she noticed Lucy, her smile grew wider and all she did was hand her one rose with a note. This note read:

Random, but when you tutor me in French, you sound and look so beautiful. No wonder why they call it the language of love… Go to the theatre dressing rooms and follow the rose petals.

She laughed to herself and did what he had asked her to do. Finding the rose petals she smiled as she slowly followed them all the way to the auditorium doors. On the doors there was a note but it was blank. She furrowed her eyebrows, but feeling a tap on her shoulders made her turn around and face Jack himself.

He said to her, “You know, when I first met you, I thought you were perfect. Your nose, your eyes, your hair. You were just different from every girl I’ve ever had any interest to. I thought maybe, that if I act like a whore around her, she’ll like me. If it works for Alex, why not me? But it was different with you. You fell for Alex, and not me. Then I realized it was because he was acting like me, the way I would act if the girl looked like a whore, for example, the way I acted with Brooklyn. If I did the same with you, would you have been mine instead of his?”

She frowned, “Jack, what are you”-

“No, Lucy, it’s fine. Really, I’m really just questioning myself. I’m just telling you this because all I think about is you. You may love Alex, probably more than you’ll ever love me, but I want you to know that me being here with you, is me loving you. I love you, the way you love Alex, and I know it’s not what you want, but I want you to know that I’m always here, and I always will be.”

“Jack, please.”

He shook his head, “Seriously, it’s fine. I know this sounded really shitty at first, but its about to change… Lucy, you’re the most beautiful girl I have ever met. You’re sweet, caring, and free spirited. It makes me fall in love with you so damn much that it’ll hurt when I hit the ground. You’re perfections are beautiful and your flaws are beautiful, and I’m happy that I can, in a complicating way, call you mine… All I want to ask you now is, Will you go to prom? With me?”

Lucy wiped away the stray tear that fell from her eye. She looked up at Jack and couldn’t contain the excitement in the pit of her stomach. She launched herself at him and caught him by surprise. She kissed him, and he kissed back. They both knew her answer was a yes.

The next few days everyone talked about where they would meet up, what they’re wearing and when everyone found out Lucy and Jack were going together everyone was happy, well everyone except Alex. During the school day, Lucy and Jack would act as if they’ve been a couple for a long time. They’d hold hands on their way to classes. Stop in the hall to kiss each other goodbye. They’d even steal their food at lunch, in which they’d fight for it back by threatening to give each other a sloppy kiss. Their friends thought it was cute, even Lisa showed how cute it was by saying a short, “awe.”

The worst part about it was when Jack didn’t go to school and at the end of the day, Alex stood next to Lucy as she shut her locker shut. She jumped in surprise, but gave him a quick hello and started walking away. He pulled on her hand and gently pushed her against the lockers, trapping her between his arms. He didn’t look mad, but he did have a look of confusion. She kept a straight face, but knew she had to text her ride to let her know she needs to pick her up somewhere else. Alex would know somethings up if he saw Lisa giving her a ride.

“What do you want, Alex?” Lucy asked.

“I want to know why you’re trying to make me jealous.” He stated, as if he knew what was actually going on. She bit the inside of her cheek to hold in her laughter but as she spoke you could tell she found this funny.

“Right Alex, I’m trying to make you jealous. You caught me. Now, can I go.”

“Why do you find this funny? Your antics of using my best friend isn’t working. So just break up with him before you hurt him.”

“Trust me, I’m not using him and I’m not trying to make you jealous. Maybe you really are jealous because Jack has me, and you don’t. Oh, and I hope you know, your make-out sessions with Lisa during lunch, aren’t really working on me. In complete honesty, I want to throw up.”

“Maybe, you’re just jealous.”

“Far from it. You wish they would make me jealous. You’re trying too hard though. Remember Alex, we’re done as in, I have no more interest in you.”

“Who said I was still interested in you?”

They both were silenced. They knew they were both lying. It was too soon to get over what they both lost. You could see the threatening tears from their eyes.

“Can I go now?” Lucy’s voice cracked. It was a sign of weakness. Something they both had in common.

Instead of saying something, he nodded his head and moved out of her way. He stood there facing the lockers instead of following her. He watched where she last stood and listened to her round the corner. He let the tears fall and when the sound of her footsteps were gone. He hit the locker and left to his car.

Alex was angry. He was angry at Jack, Lucy, Lisa, his friends, but he was mostly angry with himself. It was his fault he lost her. If he wasn’t drunk out of his mind he would have left Brooke in the middle of searching for Lucy to find Jack. If he would have used his head instead of his penis to think then he would still be with Lucy. Everything was his fault and now he has to pay the consequences. He has to watch her be happy while he’s being miserable. As grateful as he is for Jack to keep her happy, he’s only wishes that he was the one to make her happy.

The girls got their hair done. The boys took their time to get ready. The girls slipped on their dresses after their makeup was on. The boys put on their tuxedos that were matched with the girls. After everyone was at the place they were supposed to be, Kara and Lucy started to walk down Lucy’s staircase to meet up with their dates, who patiently waited with their parents.

Rian couldn’t help but think how lucky he was. Kara and him have been fighting lately but it didn’t stop them from being in love. No one knew about their fights because of what was going on with Alex and Lucy, so they kept it between them until everything felt like it was back to normal.

Kara kissed Rian’s cheek, knowing that he probably didn’t hear her complement of how good he looked. She knew he was still speechless and in his own world.

Jack was nervous ever since he asked Lucy. They wanted tonight to be perfect, but yesterday, after what happened between Alex and Lucy at school, he felt sick to his stomach. He knew about Lisa and her plans but didn’t think it would happen this quickly. Now all he wants is for the night to go by slowly. So he can savor every moment he had with her.

Lucy smiled happily at Jack. Forgetting about her plans. He kissed her softly on the lips and she felt butterflies in her stomach. She loved that feeling. She wanted to tell him the answer to his question. That if it wasn’t Alex, would it be him? She wanted to tell him yes, but he doesn’t realize that he already has her. Just not completely.

After a few pictures taken at Lucy’s house, they got in their cars and drove over to Alex’s to take more pictures there and then leave to prom. After they said their hello’s to Alex’s parents, the couples were lead to the backyard, where everyone else was. The boys started to talk amongst themselves, but their heads were turned quickly upon the most shocking part of the night. When Lisa and Lucy hugged. Everyone was confused, even Jack played off a confused face even though he knew about their hidden friendship. No one questioned it though because the parents came out with their cameras.

After the pictures were taken the boys stayed outside to chat, and the girls went inside before their hair and makeup was ruined. Isobel pulled Lucy aside from everyone and into the kitchen where she decided to ask, “Lucy, what happened between you and Alex?”

“Alex never told you?” she asked.

Isobel shook her head, “After winter break, he’s been coming home, at random days of the week, where he’d be upset and frustrated. He’d lock himself up in his room and blast music or play music that he only plays when he’s really upset. Yesterday was one of his worsts. He didn’t come home till late, and when he got home he didn’t play any music at all. He went straight to his room and threw everything around. I asked what happened and all he said was that he lost you.”

Lucy sighed and looked up so the tears wouldn’t fall. She never knew that Alex was this hurt. “Isobel, your son will always be the love of my life, and even if he doesn’t know that it’ll always be true. Alex and I broke up because he slept with my ex-best friend and I couldn’t live with that. We didn’t officially break up until the beginning of Spring. And when problems occur and destroy the relationship you have no choice but to break up.”

Isobel nodded her head, but the two were silent for a few seconds. Then Lucy couldn’t help but say, “You can trust Lisa, though. Her and I made amends and I think you should too. If not, just don’t give her such a hard time. She really has changed.”

Isobel just smiled and said, “I make no promises.”

They both laughed and left the kitchen since it was time for them to leave. Jack and Lucy were in the car by themselves, but everyone else carpooled. It was better off that way. They made it to prom and went straight for the dance floor.

Alex tried his hardest to make Lucy jealous. He and Lisa were probably dancing the dirtiest that entire night. The worst thing about it though, was that Lucy never looked their way. Her focus was only on Jack. Every thing they would say to each other would make them both laugh and a few times Jack would steal a few kisses from her. Anger boiled through Alex’s skin, he was the one that should make her feel that way. Not his best friend.

Realization hit Alex hard. Lucy will never be jealous of Alex because what he has with Lisa isn't real. What Jack and Lucy have though, that is real. Alex was the one who has always been jealous and Lucy was right. Alex fucked up real badly this time.

Throughout the night Alex decided to sit down instead of dance. He felt sick to his stomach. He’d watch Jack and Lucy from afar. He envied the two of them. About a half hour into sitting down Lisa got fed up with him and finally left to go dance with some guy from the football team. He hasn’t seen her for the rest of the night.

When Lucy finally noticed him, she turned back to Jack and whispered in Jack’s ear, which only make him smile and nod. He kissed her on the cheek and walked away from her. Leaving Lucy standing there by herself. Her eyes landed back on Alex and the music began to slow down. True Colors by Cyndi Lauper started play throughout the venue.

Lucy walked towards Alex and held out her hand. He took it without a question and she lead them to the middle of the dance floor. They began to dance slowly, with Lucy’s head on his chest and Alex’s arms wrapped around her, holding onto her as if it was going to be the last time he’ll ever see her.

In the middle of the song Lucy looked up at Alex to say what she’s been dying to say all night. But before she could even say anything, his questions were flying out of his mouth.

“Why are you doing this?” was his first question. Lucy smiled sadly at him wishing she could honestly answer him but that’s not what she’s here to do. She’s not here to answer his questions. She’s here for one reason and one reason only.

Ignoring his question she started to say what she’s been thinking about saying for a while now.

“You were a jerk when I met you, and then you were the love of my life as time grew on”-

“Lucy, what’s this”-Alex started to cut her off but Lucy wouldn’t have it.

“Alex, please just shut up.” She told him and when he did, she continued, “You know my reasons for breaking up with you, but I wanted you to know that I lied to you that night at your show. You said you love me and I said I didn’t love you. That you lost my love the day you broke my heart. I lied to you Alex, I never once stopped loving you, but I lied because I didn’t want you to know that I still love you. I just couldn’t trust you. Lisa and I became friends shortly after because she gave me a ride home and I told her what happened. She helped me a lot with coping with this. She even apologized for interfering in the beginning and she apologized for you, saying that you’re an idiot for doing what you did. And I couldn’t agree more. Jack was the only one that knew her and I were on speaking terms.” Lucy took a moment to pause and was happy when Alex didn’t speak. He looked like he really wanted to listen to what she had to say and he honestly did.

Before Lucy continued she looked at Alex. She missed him a lot and she can tell by the distress in his eyes that he missed her too. His once gorgeous brown eyes don’t have the glow they used to have and he looked like he hadn’t slept in years. She felt terrible for doing this to him, but what he did was worse than what she had done. Finally knowing she had to finish, she took a deep breath to say her goodbye.

Lucy slowly leaned in and kissed his lips softly. Alex immediately kissed back, missing the feeling of her soft lips against his. A stray tear fell from her face and when she pulled away, Alex wiped it away with his index finger and gave her a sad and confused look.

She let a few more tears fall down her face as she whispered goodbye to him. Before she was able to run off, he grabbed her hand and asked, “Why are you saying goodbye?”

Knowing the truth would hurt them both, she lied to him to make things easier.

“Jack and I are just going home.” She said softly, letting one more tear escape.

Alex nodded his head and moved a piece of stray hair behind her ear and leaned down to kiss her gently.

“I love you, Lucy.” he whispered.

“I love you too, Alex.” she whispered back. Holding in the rest of her tears, she walked out with her head high and her composure strong. She had to stay strong for the sake of her and for the sake of Alex. He watched her walk away, and let a few tears fall from his eyes. They both had a feeling in their gut, a feeling that they both ignored.

As the ending of the song played out, Alex and Lucy had told their love story, now all they had left, was their one last attempt at flight.
