I'll Never Let Them Hurt You

There's Work Days and Birthdays

Gerard

A few days had passed since my little outburst and things couldn't have been any better. I walked down the concrete side walk as fast as I could go without looking stupid, a slight spring in my step from my good mood. I heard the bottom of my shoes scraping harshly against the dull grey. In my hand I held a large package, that was overtime becoming harder and harder to carry without the underside meeting the side walk.

I once again swapped arms, to give my right arm a well earnt rest from carrying the large box but continued walking. I rounded the corner, past the large supermarket until I reached a building with a large luminous sign hanging above it. The large swirling letters of the words 'Blue Moon' hung right above my head as I stood in front of a blacked out window, meaning that I was in the right place.

"Evening Gerard." The man at the door smiled lightly, showing two lines of white teeth and opened the barrier for Gerard to walk through. Gerard smirked a little as he saw the long queue of humans he had just passed by.

"Hello Larry." Gerard replied coolly. "Everything okay?" He asked politely.

"Of course. Got ourselves quite a queue tonight." He pointed happily at the line people that Gerard had noticed. "Have a good one." He smiled warmly.

"And you." Gerard nodded and proceeded to walk through the open double doors into the bar.

The main bar was bustling, but this was not surprising after seeing the long queue outside. The lights were dimmed low as usual and fast pace dance-style music played over the loud speakers, filling the large room with a warm sound and a pulsing base. I walked through the crowd of humans and vampires to reach the arch way that lead to the next room.

The next room was not quite as busy as there were no humans clogging it up. Vampires milled around and talked to one another as softer jazz music radiated from a band on the stage over to one side. I scanned the room and soon found the end of a short line for the bar.

'Not long now' I thought to myself as the queue shortened as the vampire at the front had been served. I took the few moments I had to tap my fingers and study the room in more detail. I felt myself turn to face away from the bar as I studied a particular painting on the opposite wall.

"Can I help you sir?" The familiar timid voice pulled me out of my day dream and I snapped my body round to face the bar once more. As soon as the bar was in view, I saw his beautiful eyes widen.

"Gerard?" He spoke gently, "What are you doing here?" He asked.

"Hello Frank." I smirked a little. "I could ask you the same question actually."

"I work here." He replied, voice laced with confusion.

"Yes I know that." I smiled. "But no one should be working on their Birthday, especially not a fertile." I protested.

"Oh, I see." He looked down a little. "I need the money though, I can't afford a day off." He sighed a little. "Sorry to be rude Gerard but I have a break in ten minutes, can we speak then?" He asked politely, gesturing to the lengthening queue.

"Of course, I'm sorry. See you in ten minutes Frank." I smirked a little and walked away from the bar, through the arch, back into the main room. 'I wonder if Larry knew it was Frank's birthday?' I thought. I decided to go ask him.

"Ya' alright Gerard?" Larry asked as I slipped back out through the double doors onto the street.

"Fine thanks, I just wanted to ask you something about Frank." I said carefully.

"Oh Frank he's a lovely boy, if he did anything to upset you, I'm sure he didn't mean-" Larry started.

"Oh I assure you Larry it is nothing bad." I smirked a little. "I was just wondering whether you knew it was Frank's Birthday today?"

"It is?" Larry paused and turned fully to face me. "No, I didn't know. Frank never told me. Wait , is he working?"

"Yes."

"I feel so bad, that poor boy shouldn't be working down here on his Birthday." Larry exclaimed and I nodded in agreement. "Ya' see he never takes a day off, ever. Even if he's ill he comes down and I have to send him back upstairs." He chuckled.

"I see, quite the hard worker then?" I asked.

"Oh the best. He is the sweetest boy." Larry took a moment to cough and then continued. "Tell him to get Eric to cover the V-bar and that he is of course excused from work for the rest of the evening. Do not take no for an answer. Also tell him: If I see him again this evening, I'll have to ban him from work for the whole of November." Larry joked.

"Thank you Larry. I'll tell him now."

"Thanks for telling me Gerard. I swear one day that boy will be the death of me." He shook his head and chuckled as I walked back through the bar. On my way to see Frank I noticed a tall vampire with a glowing name tag that read: Eric and after explaining what was going on, he was following me back to the V-bar.

"It's been 10 minutes." I spoke confidently as I walked up to the bar and sat on a stool, leaning the package against a leg of the stool carefully.

"Sorry Gerard, just a few more minutes and I'll be do-"

"Eric is taking your shift now." I said calmly.

"Oh no, I couldn't just leave. Larry will want me to stay and work. it's very busy!" Frank insisted.

"I spoke to Larry and informed him that it is your Birthday and he told me that you have the evening off from now on." I smiled at Frank. "Also he said if he sees you down here again today he'll ban you from work for all of November."

"You really asked him?" Frank asked quietly as he stepped from behind the bar to let Eric takeover.

"Of course! You mustn't work on your Birthday Frank." I replied.

"Thank you Gerard. Do you want to come upstairs with me? I think I have some bread for toast?" He asked shyly.

Ten minutes later and we were sitting in Frank's apartment. I had hidden the package by placing it down to the side of the sofa on my side so Frank would not spot it.

"Why are you working today?" I enquired as we sipped coffee quietly.

"To be honest Gerard, I've never done anything on or celebrated my Birthday, so it's just like any other day for me." He said honestly, his face looking embarrassed and sad. "I never got presents or parties"

"Well that stops today." I insisted and reached around for the package. "I got you something to celebrate." I admitted, reaching around to pick up the heavy package from beside the sofa. "I got you a present."

"Gerard, you shouldn't have." He began to protest but I put my finger to his soft lips, silencing him instantly.

"I know you don't think you deserve it but I think you're the best fertile in existence and so I should be able to spend money on you." I smirked, knowing I'd won the argument when he sighed lightly.

"Okay." He said, although it was muffled due to my finger on his lips, which I withdrew after this.

"But first this is from Mikey." I explained, holding out a tin. Frank took it slowly and opened it carefully to reveal a large chocolate cake. The icing was dark brown and on the top read: 'Happy Birthday Frankie' in large swirling white icing.

"I've never had a Birthday cake before." Frank muttered, a smile etched on his beautiful face. "It's beautiful." Frank whispered, as he put the lid on the coffee table. "Tell Mikey I say thank you." He said a moment later as he continued to stare at the icing happily.

"I'll tell him you like it. He made it this morning" I replied, my stomach flipping as I watched Frank's eyes sparkle with happiness. "Would you like your present now?" I asked innocently.

"Yes please Gerard." He replied politely, placing the cake in the tin down onto the table lightly.

I passed him the large package excitedly and watched as his eyes bulged a little. "I hope you like it." I whispered into his ear, smirking as I saw him shiver.

"Gerard, why did you buy me something so big and heavy? It must have cost a fortune!" Frank protested but started to take off the white outer packaging. I held my breath as he removed the first layer gingerly and then the cardboard lid, placing it on the sofa next to him, revealing the present below.

For the longest moment, Frank was silent, just staring quite literally as still as a statue at the object in the large box. Suddenly he spoke without warning, startling me slightly.

"Tell me this isn't a dream." He murmured slowly.

"This is as real as it gets Frankie." I whispered gently, my smile so broad, it felt as though my face would split.

"I think I love you Gerard." Frank said honestly. I felt my stomach flip violently at his words. "This is the nicest thing someone has ever done for me, ever." He confirmed. He carefully pulled the cardboard box away from the present, placing it on his lap and gasped. For there sitting on his knees was a Gibson Les Paul guitar in a pure white.

"It's even prettier when it's in my apartment." He confessed, and allowed his hand to brush along the neck.

"Do you like it?" I asked hopefully.

"Like it? Gerard, it's amazing." He smiled but a small crease spread across his brow. "But very expensive. Much more than the $600 I was saving up for." He said uncertainly. "If my knowledge is correct, this is a Gibson Les Paul Custom Edition. That costs at least $1500!"

"I know, but I wanted you to have the best there is." I insisted. "Now you need something else to be able to play it don't you?" I asked.

"Well an amp, but I can just play without that's fine."

"I already got you one Frank." I laughed. "I hid it in your apartment when I dropped by yesterday." I added proudly. "Shall we play a little hide an seek Frankie?" I asked with a smirk as I saw his jaw drop.

"Y-yes, I guess." He smiled broadly and my stomach back-flipped harshly. Because seeing him smile is the best feeling.
