My Mistake, So Predictable

“Last song, guys!” Tabby announces breathlessly while messing around with her dark purple bass. The crowd boos and she laughs happily, “I know, it’s sad! We’re having a great time. But there are some really great bands coming up so give them some love too, okay?”

She pushes her sweaty bangs back from her eyes and then grins and runs her fingers down the strings on her bass, producing a clear and noise that echoes throughout the small venue, “Alright so I promised you some more upbeat music. So here’s The Summer Set again, and this song is called ‘Young’.



The last notes fade away slowly and the small crowd goes insane cheering for us as we get ready to exit the stage. “Thanks for everything, guys!” I call out, stepping up to my mic, “I don’t know about you guys, but I know I had an awesome time!”

Tabitha agrees with a thumbs up in my direction and then returns to her microphone stand, smiling out at the group of kids, “I’m Tabitha by the way, our lovely guitarist to the right of me is Hailey, and that sexy drummer back there is Max.” She grins wickedly, “He’s single by the way!” She winks out at the crowd and the girly screams grow in volume as Max groans into his microphone.

“Have a great night, loves, and rock hard!” Tabby cheers and then we leave the stage, waving our goodbyes at the still screaming crowd, leaving them jumping around. The next band walks past us and congratulates us and we wish them luck, wishing it was us going back onto the stage. It’s like a drug, the stage. Once you start, it’s hard to stay away from the addicting feeling.

“That was fucking awesome.” Max says energetically, throwing his hands in the air and cheering loudly as we make our way back to the corner where we had left our stuff we didn’t need to take with us on stage. Me and Tabby both agree enthusiastically with him and place our instruments into their cases, packing up to leave. Max hadn’t felt like bringing his own drum set, so he had borrowed the venues, luckily leaving us with very few things to carry. I’m not complaining, it’s a bitch packing up a drum set and getting it into the back of a van. Even Max agrees.

“You guys were incredible!” I hear Jack’s voice and then feel him as he launches himself at me, catching him before he slides down and hits the ground. I hug him tightly and then pull back, “I’m sweaty, Jack.” I complain with a laugh, trying to shake him off but he clings to me stubbornly.

“You think we don’t cuddle after shows?” he asks laughing.

I look at Alex with a raised eyebrow and he shrugs innocently, “It gets lonely on tour.”

I giggle and pull Alex over, giving him a quick hug. “Thanks for coming,” I whisper before stepping away from him. He reaches out and squeezes my hand, “You guys were amazing, seriously.” I blush and drop my eyes, but confusion suddenly clouds my brain as I notice an extra pair of shoes next to mine.

“Hailey?” The voice owning the shoes asks and I turn my head, a gasp falling from my mouth when I catch a glimpse of the grinning face.

“Who’s this?” Alex asks me as the guy’s eyes rest on mine and Alex’s intertwined fingers. I pull my hand out from his and step away from him, putting some distance between the two of us.

“J-Jason?” I stutter and he nods, smiling at me.

“Did you think I would miss your show?” He asks pulling me into a tight hug.

I shake my head into his chest, “Aren’t you supposed to be in Ohio?” He’s supposed to be finishing up his senior year in college and I hadn't expected him to be back for a few more weeks.

“We’re on break.”He explains and kisses the top of my head, then looks around at the wide eyed group. “Are you going to introduce me to your friends?”

I back away out of his arms and face my friends, “Guys, this is Jason.” I can’t look Alex in the eyes as I finish. “He’s my boyfriend.”
