A Serpants Lullaby...

Year 1

My father had dropped me off at Platform 9¾ right on time, where I had promptly been pushed into sitting in a cabin with 4 others that I had never met. One I had found out to be named Jay, he had dark brown hair, and was actually rather chubby. Another was a girl named Sara, who happened to be rather short with strait brown hair and fair tanned skin. The other girl named Page who was middle heighted with dark black hair, her skin was pale white and she looked as though she hadn’t seen the sun in years. And finally there was Zane, who happened to be rather tall with dark brown almost black shaggy looking hair. These where the four that later became my best friends. At this point my hair was a rather dark blonde, and I was about as tall as Zane had been.

When we had made it to Hogwarts, right away people started to realize that there was someone of importance in our group. Harry Potter, and right away he seemed to be making a name for himself when some blonde haired kid was trying to become friends with the new celebrity. Naturally, Harry had refused, and gone ahead with a flame haired boy.

When we were finally brought into the great hall, all of our age came together into a huddle, and one by one Professor Mcgonagall called us up. Harry had been put into Gryfindor, along with Ron Weasley, and some girl named Hermione Granger. Draco, (who had been that blonde boy) had merely sat down on the stool for seconds, the sorting hat had not even touched his head and it was known to all that he was put in Slytherin.

I had watched as each of my new friends had gone up and been sorted. Jay had been placed in Gryfindor, along with Page. Zane was placed in Slytherin, and Sara in Hufflepuff. When it was my turn I was honestly unsure of where I would be placed.

“Charlotte Alaster!” called Professor Mcgonagall.

I swallowed slightly, as I walked up in front of everyone, and took my seat on top the stool. My posture was lousy, but I tried my best to keep my back strait as I waited for the hat to be placed on my head. In less than a moment, I felt it being placed on my head, and come to life.

“Aha!” it exclaimed. “I haven’t seen an Alaster in years!”

I waited patiently as I listened to it speak.

“hmm…A ready mind…Talent! But smart, thinks everything out…courage, yes…bravery, yes…but not quite a Gryfindor…” it pondered. “Cunning, I can see. But not self-centered…hmmm…I know! RAVENCLAW!”

I smiled as I heard the cheers from my new house. It was nice to hear the chants of approval.
Even though we had all been sorted into separate houses, it didn’t matter. Of course we had our other friends in our dorms, but we were lucky enough to have almost all of our classes with the 5 of us. It actually turned out that Sara was the perfect all around student in our group. She would tutor us whenever needed; while Zane and Page happened to be rather good at potions and transfiguration. Jay turned out to be a natural at herbology. And as for myself, I excelled rather well at flying and defense against the dark arts. It was nice that we all had something to offer. We worked as a group, and helped each other to keep us all going.

It was about 4 months in, did it start getting curious. As first years, we had been warned many of times, never to enter the Dark Forest. Jay had actually dared me to walk 5 minutes into the forest, turn around and come back. I, of course, took the dare. I wanted to show him up, so that when I came back I could call him a chicken to his face.

I remember that as I walked, I had clutched my wand rather softly. It was at lunch to the sun was high in the sky, but under the trees of the forest, it could have been nighttime. I remember hearing a howl off in the distance, and the screech of some unexpecting bird. But I still remember being calm. 5 minutes had gone by fast, and when I stopped it was right on the edge of a clearing.

I remember how the ground looked to glow silver, and just as I was about to step into the light I heard a crack of a twig behind me. I had spun around to fast that when I saw what was behind me I about ready to throw a curse into their direction. But I was merely greeted by a white skinned horse with a silver horn, a unicorn no less.

I had looked at me, with an expression so peaceful. I had smiled, but as I went to touch it, it stirred and bolted away from me. I then watched it shock, as a black cloak hovered over the ground moving in my opposite direction. It was now that I knew something was wrong, and I began to run as fast as I could to make it out of the forest.

I knew my limit on skills, after all…it had only been 4 months of school…

When I was out of the forest, Sara had been frantic. She had been yelling at Jay, while Zane sat back and calmly waited for me to return. Page on the other hand, was nowhere to be seen. When I had walked out Zane had smiled slightly, while Jay fell over as Sara continued even after she saw me.

It was after that one adventure that I realized I wanted to go back, and even further if I wanted. So I had begun to spend as much time learning offensive spells. I had even been allowed to look through one of the fourth year spell books.

Of course, by the end of the year, there had been that encounter with Voldemort and the schools ‘star’ Harry Potter.

By the time summer came around, I had had merely 2 classes with Draco Malfoy. Both happened to be my favorites, Flying and Defense against the Dark Arts. And in both classes he was just as annoying and proud as he had been in the one before.

All in all, in my first year; I had met my 4 best friends, and found an interest in getting better, along with trying to satisfy my curiosity.

Just like most of my stories, i intend this one to be rather 'dark'. There will be death, gore, swearing, and possibly lemons in later chapters.

(also, as i had said, this is only a prologue of the actual story. Just so that i can briefly explain what it was like for Charlie while growing up at Hogwarts.)
