The Village Hidden in the Sand

The sun was cast overhead; beating down on me. The desert heat was so unbearable that the sand I’d been walking on for what seemed like forever had left the bottoms of my feet burned. I had hoped that I’d run into the Village Hidden in the Sand by now. My mother told me stories of the Sand Village. I didn’t expect to it to be so far into the desert.

My body felt like a raison, very dry. It was almost as if I could feel the sun draining my body of its water. In the distance I saw a very large wall that I could only believe to be the wall of the Sand Village. ‘Just a little further’ I told myself, pushing my feet to walk just a little bit more. It felt like I was practically running but I knew that was just lack of energy.

As I came closer to the Village wall, my face brightened with joy and I could feel happiness flood through me. The wall was so close – so very close to being in my grasp and at my feet. I could get some water and maybe even some food if I found someone like Morina. My foot speed picked up a little as I got a small burst of excitement thinking of drinking water and eating delicious food.

The wall only a few feet in front of me and all I have to do is keep walking through the gates. As I continued walking, my vision started to get fuzzy and I felt my body start to sway. No, I thought, I must get to the…

I opened my eyes to a blonde woman in front of me, waving her fingers in my face. I could barely see beyond her but it seemed like a couple other people were with her too. My mind immediately fled to the first city I came across. What if these people are just like them? I thought fearfully.

“Well, it’s about time you woke up,” the girl laughed, “you were starting to scare me for a little while.”

“He was dehydrated.” An irritated sounding voice chimed in. As my vision cleared I saw a red haired boy standing up next to her with his arms folded over his chest. I looked up in his eyes and his stared back at mine almost angrily. “Who are you?” he asked me.

I couldn’t help but notice the scar above his left eye, it looked almost like a burn scar, but it looked the word my mom would write on a piece of paper sometimes when she gave me food. Why would he have a scar like that? I wondered.

“I will ask you again,” he said flatly, taking my attention from his scar back to his original question. “Who are you?”

“W-what do y-you mean?” I stuttered, trying to clear my head. When I was able to sit up I huddled my feet to my chest. I exhaled deeply before saying, “I’m Arami of the Kaguya clan.”

“I thought the other boy was the last of the Kaguya clan?” Another voice chimed in, this one not a light tone with seriousness to it. I looked up and saw a brown haired boy standing next to the blonde girl. I felt a bit safer with the other two than I did with the red haired boy.

“So did I,” the red haired boy stated.

“Kimimaro!” I shouted, immediately covering my mouth after. I didn’t mean to shout.

The one with the red hair nodded then asked, “What are you doing here?”

“I’m just trying to find somewhere to go.” I admitted. I didn’t want to admit it but I wasn’t sure what would happen to me if I lied so I was honest with them. The blonde girl urged me to go on, so I began explaining.

“You said that Kimimaro was the last one of the Kaguya clan, but he wasn’t. You see, Kimimaro is my brother. When the Kaguya clan decided to fight to the death with the Village Hidden in the Mist, Kimimaro was taken out of his cage while I was left in mine. The chakra seals only last for 13 years, so when I turned 13 the seals disintegrated and I was free. But when I got out, no one was there, so I ran to try and find somewhere to go.”

The brunette boy and blonde girl looked at me with fascination, but the red haired boy didn’t shift from his serious look, it was almost frightening. The blonde girl stood up and left the room, but quickly returned with a plate of food. Giving it to me, I couldn’t help but greedily take it for which I felt bad for soon after. I could see the anger flick through her face, but she quickly got a calm look again.

“Well, Arami, it’s nice to meet you, but you’ve stalled our mission so far.” The brunette spoke. “We stumbled into you on our way out of the Village.”

“Oh…” I rubbed my head anxiously. “I’m sorry, where were you going?”

“The Village Hidden in the Leaves,” the blonde haired girl chimed in. “Oh, and by the way I’m Temari, and these are my two brothers Kankuro and Gaara.” She pointed to the two on either side of her. I nodded politely at her to acknowledge them.

They offered for me to go with them, which is when I remembered the burns on my feet, immediately my hands went to my feet and felt clean soles with no signs of burns. “Oh, the Medical Ninjas healed your feet for you – they looked pretty bad.”

“Oh,” I said, surprised. “Thank you.”

I was very happy that my feet were healed and after eating until I was stuffed and drinking until I was fully hydrated I was ready to go with them to the Village Hidden in the Leaves.

Gaara walked in silence a few steps ahead of everyone while Kankuro and Temari walked on either side of me, the two of them together explaining what life in the Sand Village was like for them since their father the Kazekage was killed and how hard it’d been for their village since. They hadn’t found anyone to be the next Kazekage, but they were looking.

I listened to them go on about their training and how hard it’s been since the chunin exams, but unfortunately I had no idea what they were talking about, but went along with it anyway so I wouldn’t interrupt them. They told me about how Temari used her giant fan in battle, how Kankuro used his puppet crow and sometimes his new puppet ant, which he didn’t bring this time, and how Gaara is the only person in the Sand Village who actually wields the sand.

Everything they were telling me was fascinating, but when they asked me what I could do, my fascination turned into horror. My thoughts flashed to Morina when I protected her with my body and ended up terrifying her instead. It was the first time I ever really used the kekkei genkai – I didn’t even know I was able to do it until then.

“Hello,” Kankuro’s large hand waved in front of my face bringing me back to what they said. I just hung my head down low and they began talking about themselves some more, which I was happy for – it would keep me away from explaining it a little bit longer.
