The Shortest Distance

He asks,
and I'm startled.
"Sorry, Markie, I
just spaced out again."
I say, and he smiles sadly.
"It's okay hon,
don't worry about it."
My heart aches for him.
Who put that hurt in his eyes?
And why would they do that to someone so
perfect?
