Sequel: Science & Faith

Fairytales & Lullabies

and I know being the fairest of them all,

The hospital room was quiet. Not a good, peaceful quiet; an uncomfortable quiet; one that was unwanted and only can around in bad situations. It didn’t help that the room was bleak. The walls were white and there was only a vase of flowers to decorate the room.

I was sitting next to Kris' bed. He was asleep and hooked up to several machines. Some were one’s that I had never even heard of. He had woken up in the ambulance and went through testing as soon as he arrived. He ended up with a fractured wrist (which he claimed he would still be able to play with) and a minor concussion. He was lucky to only be dealing with minor issues and was able to go home in the morning.

I planned on staying next to the bed for the night. I would be the one to bring home in the morning so I might as well be here when he was ready. I had my head tilted back and my eyes shut when there was a knock at the door. Jordan came in with Kris' duffel bag. "I thought he might need it. His suits in it and we found some extra clothes for him."

I got up and pulled Jordan into a hug. "Thanks Jordy. It means a lot." I looked at the clock in the room it was almost midnight.

"How is he?" Jordan moved and sat down next to me on the couch in the room.

"He’ll be fine. He might miss a few games, but he'll be fine." Jordan nodded his head. We sat in silence, not knowing what to say next. Jordan's cell phone ringing snapped the silence. He looked at the screen before he ignored it and put it back in his pocket. He sighed and brushed his hands through his blond hair. His elbows moved to rest on his knees. "Maybe I should be the one to ask how you're doing. Are you doing okay?"

"Yeah," he kept his head down, "Heather just keeps nagging me. She always wants me to get home right away and not hang with the guys. It's getting frustrating."

I placed my hand on his back. I rubbed his back in comforting circles. "You ever need anything, just let me know. I’m always here for you. I don’t care what time it is, my phone will be on and you’re always welcome at our place."

It was quiet but I heard it. "Thank you." It might have been a small offer; one he may never need to use. But right now, it seemed to mean a lot to know someone was there for him.

Kris walked into the living room around 11pm. He had left the hospital around 9 this morning and fell asleep as soon as we arrived home. I had been curled up on the couch with a few blankets. Kris needed his rest and I didn't want to disturb him.

"How are you feeling?" He shrugged and went directly to the fridge. He came back to the couch and I sat up to make room for him. I move over and started running my hand through his hair. "Kris?"

His eyes were closed. "Yeah?"

"I wanted to talk to you about something." He kept his eyes closed and my hands kept playing with his hair. "When you got hurt, I had to go through you duffel bag for phone to call your parents."

His eyes shot open and looked right at me. "I didn't mean for you to find it. I need to keep somewhere where no one would find it."

"No, no. It's okay. You don't have to explain anything." Kris settled down and my hand went back to his hair. His eyes stayed open, not wanting to miss what I would say next. "I really care about you Kris. And I know that I'm falling for you, but it's too early for that."

He sat up and took both my hands in his. My hands looked so small with his giant hands around mine. "I feel the same way about you. I know I love you Greta. I just wasn't exactly sure how you felt. I got the ring when we were at my parents. It was my grandmothers. I just wanted in case the time was right. It may not be now, but it may soon or it could be years from now."

I pulled Kris in for a kiss and wrapped my arms around his neck. We curled back up, this time Kris' hand played with my hair. "I'm glad you understand. What do you say to staying up for a while and watching The Office?"

He leaned in and kissed me. "Sounds perfect." I got up and put in a disc and sat against Kris’ chest. I could feel it his chest each time he laughed at the show.
