Give and Take

Johnathan's eyes flickered with enthusiasm and Ariadne couldn't help but to give him a grudging smile.

"Go ahead," she grumbled.

Leaning forward, he spoke in his acting voice: "When there is fire in me, I am still cold. When I own your true love’s face, you will not see me. To all things, I give no more than I am given. In time I may have everything, yet I may keep nothing. What am I?"

Ari would have answered; she swore she would have! But someone walked behind Johnathan. Someone she didn't recognize, which was rare in the small college they went to. Her attention was completely diverted. If it hadn't been, she might have seen him look behind him and watched as his expression darkened into a bitter mask.
