Like We Did When We Were Young

Growing up.

"Wake up, Kelsey," I said, trying to wake my best friend up.

"No," she said, pulling the covers over her head.

"Kelsey, we have to go to work," I said. "It's our first day."

"How much time do I have?" she asked.

"Forty-five minutes."

"WHAT?" she exclaimed. "Why didn't you try and get me up earlier?!"

"I have been trying!" I said. "Now get up or I'm leaving without you!"

---

We got to work right on time, and our manager introduced us to the other worker, Joel.

"So what exactly...do we do?" I asked.

"Take their order, then bring it to me, and then serve it to them," he said.

"Alright, that's simple enough," Kelsey said. "Are there any other workers?"

He shook his head, "No, not on this shift at least."

"Okay," I said.

---

The job itself wasn't hard, it was the idiots you had to deal with. I didn't know much about the diner yet, how was I supposed to know answers. I ended up having to ask Joel, which, I didn't mind at all.

"MISS CAN I GET SOME SERVICE?!" I hear an obnoxiously familiar voice yell. Oh Justin.

"Can I help you, sir?" I say sarcastically.

"I'd like a coke and a burger," he said.

I rolled my eyes, "Anything else?"

"No, thanks," he said with a smirk.

"Who's that?" Joel asked as I handed him the order.

"My friend Justin," I said. "Being the ass that he is."

"Ahh," he said. "I bet you'll have fun with that."

"You have no idea."

---

"Why couldn't you just take Justin?" Kelsey asked.

"Justin is busy, apparently," I said. "Come on, you love concerts!"

"I know," she said, then stopped walking. "I just feel like you're going to ditch me for Stephen."

"Why would I do that?"

"I don't know, I just- oh my god," she said. "He's here."

I looked around and I knew exactly who she was talking about. John, who was talking to Austin Gibbs.

"Happy now?" I ask.

She nodded her head, "Yes."
