Somebody That I Used to Know

Five Years

After eating, Ronnie and I were on our way home. Ronnie was singing along to the music streaming from my radio and I couldn’t help but feel as though things were a bit awkward between the two of us. We got stuck in traffic and I sighed.

“You always have been impatient.” Ronnie said from beside me with a forced chuckle.

I smiled a bit, probably making the situation between the two of us even more awkward.

“What’s wrong, Angel?” he asked sweetly.

“Nothing’s wrong, Ron. Don’t worry about me.”

“This is because of what happened at your mom’s place, isn’t it?” he asked, I said nothing and Ronnie sighed again, “I guess it’s just, after you being the only person who really visited me while I was cooped up, plus the tattoo, not to mention that kiss which was just indescribable, I guess I just wanted to pretend there could be more.”

I looked over at Ronnie; his eyes were staring down at his hands that were folded neatly in his lap and just by the tone of his voice, I could tell he might cry.

“Ronnie,” I began, moving across the seat of the still car to place two fingers under his chin and force him to look at me, “I love you more than anything else in this world, and you know that better than anyone. It’s just, even if we fell madly in love, I wouldn’t want to risk the relationship we have now.”

Ronnie nodded his head.

“I understand. But what about the kiss?” he said, nibbling on his lip nervously.

“We kiss all the time, we cuddle all the time, we’ve always been very touchy feely. I guess some of it also had to do with me not being with you for such a long time.”

He nodded his head again, turning to look out the window as the traffic cleared up and we were able to speed home. We were there in no time, Ronnie walking in through the front door before me and unfortunately, I knew I would need to go in to work soon so I didn’t have too much on my plate after a week out, so I woke up early the next morning with Ronnie’s arm wrapped tightly around me and my leg hooked around his waist. Ever since he had gotten out of jail, he had not slept in his own bed other than a few naps.

“Ronnie.” I mumbled as I nudged his arm off of me a bit. “Ronnie get up, I need to go to work.”

Ronnie grumbled before reluctantly pulling his arm off my body. I got out of the bed and went to the bathroom to take a quick shower. I washed my hair and put a sufficient amount of conditioner in it before doing everything else I had to do in the shower. I stepped out and wrapped a green towel, that was most likely Ronnie’s, around me before walking into my bedroom. Ronnie was no longer in there and he had neatly fixed the bed. I could hear the sound of the TV from the living room downstairs along with the loud sound of the blender as I walked to my closet to get something to wear .

After I was dressed, I walked down the stairs to see Ronnie in the kitchen.

“What are you doing, RonRon?” I asked as I walked up to the already nicely dressed Ronnie.

“Well, since I don’t have a car yet and you’re going to be at work then I need to find something to entertain myself.” he said as he handed me a cup of tea that he prepared perfectly for me.

“And getting dressed entertains you? Are you planning on getting laid when I leave today?” I asked playfully.

He chuckled and shook his messy head of hair.

“Nah, I’m not a famous rock star or anything like that. Where do you expect me to get these fine bitches?”

I laughed and shook my head.

“Do you want me to drop you off at Jacky’s?” I asked as I grabbed my keys from on top of the kitchen island and made sure that both of our pets were fed.

“Yes, please.” Ronnie said as he followed me out the door.

We got into my car and I made the short drive over to Jacky’s apartment. I stopped the car directly in front and looked at Ronnie.

“Do you have your new phone? I’ll call you on my break and when I get out later.” I said, referring to the new iPhone I had bought him.

“Yes, Angel.” he said sweetly, pulling me in for a small hug.

“Okay, I love you.” I said to him as he opened the door and stepped out of the car.

“I love you too!” he shouted as he approached the front door to the small apartment complex.

I waited for him to walk fully through the door before speeding off the work. I arrived there in record time and went to the top floor where my office was. I threw a manila folder that had been handed to me by Parker when I walked in onto my desk and walked over the door to enter Jason’s private office. I knocked on the door but didn’t wait for a response before walking in.

“Ana,” he began a bit confused as he leaned back in his chair and placed his hands behind his head, “What are you doing here? I said you can have the rest of the week off.”

“I know,” I said as I walked over to sit in one of the chairs in front of his desk, “but I didn’t want to come back next Monday and have a desk full of work waiting for me so I figured I might as well get some stuff done today.” I explained.

“I understand. Well, just get to work in that case, I have a meeting at twelve so I’ll be leaving soon. Can I trust you to be in charge?”

I nodded my head. “Yeah, of course you can.” I said before walking back out.

I sat in my desk and filed some papers, shredding the ones I no longer needed. I turned on my computer when the folder was empty and finished setting up the front page of next month’s magazine.

“Ms. Chek?” I heard from over the intercom.

“Yes, Parker?” I asked the seventeen year old intern that often acted as my assistant kindly.

“Someone wants to see you. Do you have any time today?” he asked.

“Yes, send them in now. Thank you, Parker.”

“Anytime.” he said.

The doors to the top floor, where I was, opened and a man stepped through them. He had slightly tanned skin, brown hair, and green eyes, and he was looking around the room curiously.

“You’re Anastasia Chek?” he asked me.

“Yes I am.” I began as I stood up to shake his hand, “How can I help you?”

“Wow, I didn’t think it would be this easy to find you.” he said as we both sat down in our respective seats.

“I don’t mean to be rude, but who are you?”

“You don’t know who I am? I never thought you would forget me.”

“Continue to explain.” I said as I leaned back in my chair, frustrated and confused.

“Is this your husband?” he asked, grabbing ahold of the picture I had sitting on my desk of me and Ronnie.

“No, I’m single. Can you please tell me how you know me?”

“My name is Timothy Chek, and well…I’m your father. I know I left when you were young, but I haven’t changed that much.”

“You’re my father?” I asked, to which he nodded his head. “Well, in that case, get out.”

“Ex-Excuse me? I wanted to apologize for what I did to you.”

“Was that before or after you read the article about me being the new VP of a major magazine company?” I asked.

“Well, Ana, does it matter?” he asked.

“You have five minutes before I call security. I need to go pick somebody up and you’re making me late. If you still care in five years, you can come back then.”
