Daddy's Home

Chapter Fourteen

After leaving my room, I went downstairs and my mom smiled at me and asked “ How do you like your surprise?”
“Mom, why did you do this? I really hope you realize im not going to be getting back together with Kenneth. Please realize im with Adam now.” I pleaded.
“Hunny…” She slowly adjusted the coral cuffs of her button-up shirt and looked down. “I just wanted you to remember…”
“Mom, I don’t want to remember Kenneth.” I clenched my teeth and grabbed my purse and keys. I decided to go drive to see Melissa, I think she would be home. I drove through the yellow lights and barely stopped at the reds. When I finally got through the town I pulled up to Mel’s colonial. Her car was in the driveway and her bedroom light was on. I walked up to the white French doors and knocked.
“Hey?” Mel opened the door and gave me a questioning look.
“Hey. How are you? I haven’t talked to you since forever.” I smiled and crossed my arms around my chest when a bitter, crisp wind flew past me.
“Yeah. Sure seems like it.” She awkwardly put crossed her arms across her chest and looked behind her into her living room.
“What’s wrong” I asked, shivering slightly.
Mel looked behind her again at her dad and he nodded slightly and she stepped out onto the porch and closed the door behind her.
“Sarah, look, we’ve both grown into two very different people and, I don’t think I want to continue whatever you want to call this. You’ve changed completely and I just, you aren’t the same Sarah, and I don’t want to be around you anymore. So, I faked going on a trip so I could put this off for just a while longer.”
My eyes completely widened and my mouth hanging open, I inhaled deeply and backed up. I turned around just as a tear fell from my eye and onto my red, cold cheek.
“Sarah!” Melissa called after me and I ignored her and walked to my truck. “Sarah, Im sorry!” She called again. I then got into the front seat and started the car. I pulled out and tears began to flow out and my face scrunched up and I pulled over to the side of the road. I put my head down and just cried.

“So, mom, what did the doctor say?” I asked after she got situated after the test to tell how well the chemo was going.
“About 2 weeks.” She sighed.
“About 2 weeks until..?” I asked confused.
“Left to live.”
