How to Save a Life

Beep! Beep! Beeeeeep!
I glanced up in shock from the dark green, hard, and lumpy hospital chair to see my best friend lying motionless in the hospital bed. I didn’t know if I wanted to cry, scream, or just sit there in shock. I’m just dreaming. That thought raced through my head as several nurses and a couple doctors rushed into the room.
“Miss, you need to leave,” one of the nurses said to me, and I walked out of the room, still in denial and slid against the wall feeling silent tears run down my face. Was I going to wake up from this horrible nightmare?
“Time of death…11:52 p.m.,” I heard a doctor state grimly. I lost my best friend. Why? Why did this happen to her?
“I’m sorry, Dear, but she passed away,” the same nurse that told me to leave said as she sat down beside me and patted my shoulder sympathetically. “Would you want to see her?” the nurse asked several minutes
I nodded my head then stood up with the nurse, and she led me back into the room before walking out of the room to give me my privacy
“Abbey, why did this have to happen?” I sobbed and looked down at the blond-haired girl lying on the bed with cuts, scrapes, and bruises covering her from head to toe. After around fifteen minutes of just standing there, I sat back down in the chair where I was previously sitting and pulled out my iPod and putting it on shuffle.
Step one you say we need to talk…” How to Save a Life” by The Fray started blaring through the headphones as I thought back to last night.
“Cassie, we need to talk,” Abbey told me seriously as she walked into my bedroom.
“Ok, then talk,” I spat.
“You know I never meant for that to happen at the party,” Abbey whispered, referring to the fact I caught her with my boyfriend at some party we went to over the weekend.
“Then why’d you do it?” I said while glaring over at her.

More tears came as I thought of the fight.
And you began to wonder why you came... The song continued as more flashbacks flooded my mind.
“Why did I even come? I knew you’d never listen to me!” Abbey screamed at me as she stood up, and I followed suit.
“Why
] did you come?” I yelled back just as angry. “I hate you, Abigail Matthews! You’re dead to me!”
“Goodbye, Cassidy,” Abbey whispered with a few tears streaming down her face before running out of my room.

I hated myself right then; it was my fault she was dead.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend, somewhere along in the bitterness, and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known how to save a life… The chorus started and the most horrid memory from the past two days started playing through my mind.
I tried calling Abbey to apologize for what I said, but she never answered. I called all night, and still never got an answer. Just then my phone started ringing, and I quickly answered it without looking at the caller ID.
“Is this Miss Carlson?” a lady asked.
“This is she. How may I help you?”
“Well, your friend, Abigail Matthews, has been involved in a terrible car wreck,” the lady said, and once I heard “wreck,” I was out of the house and rushing to my car.
“Is she okay? Where is she?” I asked hurriedly as I pulled the car out of the driveway.
“I don’t think she’ll make it through the night, Miss Carlson,” she replied before giving me directions to the hospital.

“Abbey, I never wanted this to happen. I never meant anything I said. I love you and miss you,” I whispered once the song ended. Why did this have happen? Why did I yell at her? I wish I could take everything back and let her tell me her side of the story; now my best friend is gone forever, all because of a pointless fight.
