Be Like You

Christmas Suprises

I sighed, breathing in the damp air with a smile on my face as I realized that I was finally back. I was finally back to the place I called home, even if I was only here for a few months time at a year.

Most of the year I lived in the states due to my father’s wishes that I get an American education but after much pleading every year he agrees to spend my breaks in Holmes Chapel; most of the reason is my begging to see my best friend. We’ve known each other since birth, and spending most of the year apart can only make me more desperate to come back.

A groan coming out of my dad as he pulled my luggage into the house, “Elizabeth, did I not tell you to pack lightly? It’s only two weeks here”.

I rolled my eyes amused, “Dad, its only two bags. Don’t be so dramatic”.

“Yes, well you’re not the one pulling them in. Now go unpack, the school gets out soon and you’re not leaving until you’re all settled in”.

I unpacked everything slowly to kill sometime as I thought back to all the good times I’d experience in this little village. I could drive my friends crazy just telling them stories of how I
spent my breaks, once you got me started I wouldn’t stop.

The jingle of the car keys pulled me out of my day dream to look up at my dad who just stood in the doorway, “The school should be letting out soon, you should hurry”, tossing the keys at me I grinned.

“You’re going to let me drive?”

He nodded, “I’m not going to be here much these two weeks due to work, I thought you two could use a type of transportation while I’m gone”.

Grabbing my purse and hugging him I ran down the stairs to get in the car and head over to the school, the village was small enough that even if I got pulled over the police officer wouldn’t say much, they all knew I had my license in the states; just not here.

I had to park the car before I jumped out of excitement even trying to stay calm, you could only
go a few months without seeing your best friend. Minutes seemed to pass by painfully slowly
as I waited for the time on my phone screen to hit three.

Grinning like a lunatic I waited patiently once everyone filled out of the school entrance while I waited to see the famous curls, you could spot them a mile away and I grinned once I saw them. Not caring if I was interrupting the conversation I jumped on the back of the curl’s owner, my laugh being loud enough so that his scream couldn’t be heard.

“Mate, please tell me it’s not a monkey on my back?”

Chuckling he shook his head, “I’ll see you around Harry. I guess I know where to find you during break”, leaving us with a nod he walked towards the parking lot.

“Lizzie why didn’t you tell me you would be home for Christmas?” Harry asked amused as he carried me to my car.

“Because then it’s not a surprise silly!”

Shaking his head he let me get down before engulfing me in a bone breaking hug, “I missed you” we breathed out at the same time causing us to crack smiles as my eyes got watery,
“Don’t cry, you always do this” he murmured drying my face before hugging me again.

After our little crying fest we eventually decided to head to the bakery, me being hungry and missing the sweets that they were well known for, that and Harry wanted to show off his baking skills. Two pies, seven cookies, four brownies, and three pastries later we slowed down so we could actually catch up.

“So uh how’s Jeff?” he asked somewhat nervously making me look at him curiously before answering, “He’s good, I mean we don’t talk much since we broke up a few weeks ago; but
he’s good. And Rebecca, how’s she?”

“I don’t know, she ended things a few weeks ago too; it just wasn’t working for us” he shrugged his shoulders as if the breakup hadn’t bothered him.

“And you’re okay? I know how much you liked her” I noted worried, he had a habit of pushing things away until they hit him full force, “Yeah, I’ve had my eye on another girl for some time
now” he smirked before taking a sip of his drink.

Laughing at his cheekiness I slapped his shoulder playfully before biting into my cookie, “Still going commando?”

“You know it love” he winked, flipping his curls to the side trying to pose before the both of us cracked up, “The paparazzi will love you when you become famous! Try not to forget me?”

Looking at me confused he kept his gaze on me until I had to look away, “What makes you think I would ever forget you? Seventeen years of friendship can’t just be thrown out the window Lizzie, you of all people know how much friendship means to me”.

Sighing I nodded looking back at him, “Yeah I know, I just can’t help but think once you go and finally do something to prove you’re good enough that you’ll become increasingly famous and forget all about me”.

Pulling me into a hug he kissed the top of my head, “You couldn’t pay me enough money to forget about you. Ever.” He emphasized on the last word, instantly making me feel better.
