No One Does It Better
They're tryin' to take it from us, they're tryin' to take it from us
My dad stood in the doorway waving vigorously to Jake and I as we drove off. It was so good seeing my dad, I missed being around his crazy self. I didn’t want my dad to be worried so Jake and I had spent the remainder of the weekend not bringing up Mike and pretending like nothing had happened. I could still tell he was hurt about it though, something in his eyes screamed at me as if he really wanted to say something.
It was a lot quicker getting home than we expected. Jake and I lugged our bags into the house dumping them onto the floor. I walked into the bedroom to find Jake sitting on our bed. He looked up at me awkwardly. I sighed sitting down next to him.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you Jake” he just shook his head before looking down at his hands.
“Is it because….” A nervous laugh escaped his lips “…am I…am I not enough for you? Is there something I’m doing wrong?” He choked out.
I sighed “Jake…there’s nothing you did wrong…it’s just…” I trailed off.
“Don’t say it” Jake whispered.
Neither of us said anymore. I laced our fingers as we lay in silence.

Mikes POV
I sat on Jessie’s bed as she continued running around her room getting ready. I couldn’t help but laugh as she started abusing her make up for not working properly. It’s not like she needed make up anyway…She was beautiful.
“Okay, let’s go!” She said taking my hand and yanking me from her bed. She started talking but I couldn’t concentrate on her words, the only thing on my mind was our hands touching.
“Mike!” She yelled I opened my eyes wide
“What?” I said confused. She shook her head laughing.
“I asked where your brother is”
“Oh, sorry.” I said pulling her out the front door to Vic’s car. Jessie smiled widely at Vic as she said hello. Vic smiled back before starting the engine.
“Guys, remember that Mike’s only got one chance left. Don’t screw this up, I don’t want my little bro being taken away from me okay?” Vic said as he pulled up.
We both nodded before stepping out of the car. Every year, there is a party thrown at our local beach, there were so many people here this year.
Jessie looked up at me with the exact same look on her face as the look on mine.
“There’s a fuck load of people here” She said taking my hand. I pulled her into my tall frame as we walked over to the alcohol.” We were going to need a lot of this.
END MIKES POV
---
I stared at my feet as I nervously shifted in my chair. I looked over at the occupied seat next to me.
“We are so fucked.” Mike spoke as his worried brown eyes met my hazel eyes.
“My dad is going to ground my ass for a fucking eternity.” I said muffling a giggle.
“Jessie, this isn’t funny, do-” Mike was cut off by the man standing at the door.
“If you two would like to come in and take a seat now.” He looked down from his glasses to us as we walked past him into the room. I knew I should be a bit more worried than I was, but to be honest I was still feeling slightly buzzed from the alcohol.
Mike gave me a look as we sat down and I knew he was extremely nervous. “Don’t worry Mike, they won’t do it I promise” I said leaning closer to him so only he heard.
“Jessie, they said one more screw up and they’ll send me away and I’m pretty sure being in a police station at 2 in the morning counts as a screw up.” His voice cracked as he spoke. I couldn’t help but feel overly responsible for this. Mike’s eyes darted from mine to the man sitting in front of us as he cleared his throat. I could feel myself sobering up as he began to talk,
“So...., who is going to be the lucky one to tell me what happened tonight?” His deep voice spoke.
“I will” I said quickly before Mike could get a word in.
“Okay, go on.” The officer said and looked directly at me.
“Well..., we were at this party by the lake and there were a group of girls who had clearly drunk more alcohol than they could handle-” He cut me off before I could finish.
“Are those the girls in the next room?” He asked
“Um, yeah that’s them.”
“Okay, carry on.” The officer sighed
“Alright, well they were over the other side of the bon fire at the beach from us and they kept shooting me and Mike-”
“Mike and I” Mike cut in. I shot him a dirty look but quickly dropped when I saw the sadness in his eyes. Mike always had a thing about correcting my grammar, he couldn’t help doing it.
“They kept shooting Mike and I” I continued “dirty looks. I just ignored it at first but then they started calling me things.” I said
“What were some of the things that they were calling you...Jessie is it?” he said
“Yeah, it’s Jessie. Um, they called me ‘Slut’, ‘Whore’ and ‘Home wrecker’ and then they walked over to me and told me that if I knew what was good for me I’d leave the state and not come back” I said while rolling my eyes.
“Did you provoke these name callings in anyway?” He asked seriously
“One of the girls, Katy used to date Mike and she thinks I got in between them.” I said turning to Mike to smile. He sheepishly gave me a smile back before looking back down at his hands.
“But once Katy came over to me, I told her to just leave and then she mentioned my mother leaving me and dad so I punched her in the face” I said proudly. I knew that violence is wrong but I don’t regret what I did. She really had it coming.
“Okay, so that’s when the fighting started...So Mike how did you get involved in all of this?” The officer asked turning his attention to Mike.
I looked over at the boy sitting next to me. Most people would be intimidated by the lanky boy wearing nothing but black with his dark hair covering half his face, but I knew he was just a softy, I hoped the police officers could see that.
I started to feel really guilty for bringing Mike into this, I really didn’t think that it would have gone as far as it did and we both knew that it wasn’t going to end well.
Mike looked up from his hands and looked me in the eye before turning to face the officer. “Um, well when Jessie and Katy started hitting each other, I went over to break it up and Katy’s older brother thought I was trying to hurt Katy, so he came over and smashed his bottle over my head” Mike said while pointing to the dried blood on the side of his head.
“So, I um turned around and punched him back and then it kind of got a little out of control and people started coming in and joining in....and that’s when you guys showed.” He said looking back down at his hands. I reached over and grabbed one of his hands and linking my fingers with his, giving him a reassuring smile.
“Okay, well your story seems to match up pretty well with the other girl’s stories. We’re going to let you off this time because I do not want to deal with all that paperwork, but if this happens again don’t think we’ll be as easy on you as we are now.” The officer said sternly.
Mike and I nodded as we left the room and walked into the hallway.
“I’m really sorry Mike” I said as I hugged into his tall lanky frame.
“I know its okay. That bitch shouldn’t have mentioned your mother.” He spoke into my hair as he hugged me back.
Mike has always been really sympathetic towards me when it came to my mother. He was there to see my mother tear my family apart so he knew how much it had hurt me and dad.
“There better be good bloody reason why the police called me at 2 in the morning Jessica Francine Grove” I spun around to see my dad standing with his hands on his hips.
“Dad, you have no freaking idea what this girl said to me. And please no middle names” I said giving my dad a grin.
“Doesn’t change the fact that you are grounded miss.... but I’m sure this girl deserved whatever she got” He said while laughing. “Come on, I want to go to bed” He said while he ushered us out the door.
As Mike and I climbed into the back of my dad’s car my dad spoke up “Now, Mr Fuentes. I’m assuming you’ll be staying over our house?” He said giving both of us knowing look.
“Yeah, thanks Phil. I appreciate it” Mike said smiling linking his hand into mine. No one spoke much on the drive home but the whole way I could feel Mike’s eyes burning into my face.
After dad had said goodnight and gone to bed we walked upstairs to my room.
“Why is it that all the girls you choose to date turn out to be dirty bitches?” I teased giving Mike a pillow and blanket for the couch in my room.
“Do I sense some jealousy Jessie? You don’t need to worry, you know you’re the only girl for me” Mike said as he collapsed onto the couch. I had a sense of happiness knowing how important I was to him.
“Why would I be jealous of all those STD’s?” I said while I threw the first thing that came into my hand at him.
“Ow! Why would you throw a TV remote at me?” Mike said trying to give me puppy dog eyes. I shrugged before lying down in my bed.
“Night Mike” I whispered
“Goodnight you psycho” Mike whispered back
