Kickstart My Heart

3/3

"You. You are a dead man."
I heard Matt say.

"Yeah, what the fuck dude? We've been trying to
call you for ages. Answer your goddamn phone!"
I heard Zacky say.

"I'm sorry but my phone is dead. I bought a new one but
I couldn't give you the number. Dawn killed it."
Brian added, what made me open my mouth in shock.

"You're a dick. You jumped in the ocean with the phone in
your pocket, not me."
I said, softly punching his arm.

"You convinced me to go swimming."
he countered, smirking.

"And you agreed."
I said, silencing him.

"Dawn?"
Matt asked.

I turned towards him.
"Hey Matt. What's up?"

"Wow, you look.. Different. Good different. I didn't recognize
you."
Matt said, smiling at me.

"I get that alot."
I said, smiling.

"Hey, Dawn."
Zacky said.

I smiled and waved at him.
"I have to admit, it was my fault Brian didn't show up so
don't hate on him too much. I was about to leave so.. I'll
see you guys later."
I said and wanted to walk towards the door but Brian
grabbed my hand.

"You're staying. You guys want some dinner?"
Brian asked Matt and Zack.

"Yeah, sure. Where are we going?"
Matt asked.

Brian shrugged and grabbed his keys before closing the door
and walking outside.

"We could go to the fair?"
I asked.

The guys all looked at me simultaneously.

"What?! The fair is really nice this time of day."
I said, hoping they would agree.

"But dinner."
Zacky said, with big eyes.

"McDonalds? We can eat it quick and then go to
the fair. Pleaaaassseeee?"
I tried to convince them.

"I'm up for it."
Brian said after a few seconds.

"Yay! Come on, guys. When is the last time you've gone
to a fair like this?"
I asked, tilting my head.

"God. Fine, you win. I'll go."
Matt said, rolling his eyes playfully.

"That's it Z-Man. You have to come, too."
I said, smiling at him.

"God, I hate fairs."
Zacky said before walking over to Matt's car and getting
in.

"He'll enjoy it."
I said, confidently and also walked over to Matt's
car.
Brian and I both sat in the back and I just listened
to the guys, talking about how they had to rearrange their
schedule so they could get some work done today.

After a while I zoned out and I somehow got stuck with
'The River' in my head.

I started bopping my head a bit, singing it in my mind.

"What are you doing?"
Brian asked, softly.

I looked to my right and smiled.
"I have a song stuck in my head. I try to get rid of it by
playing it in my head and singing along with it."

"What song?"
he asked, curious.

"The River, funny enough."
I said, smiling at him.

"Do you have it on cd, Matt?"
Brian asked.

"Yup. Zack, can you ook around in the dashboard? I have it
somewhere."
Matt said, pointing at the dashboard.

Zacky started rummaging through the pile of cd's in the small
space before finding the right one.

"Found it!"
he said, after a minute or two.

When the beat of the song started I smiled and started
singing along.

We arrived at the McDonalds and after we ordered our food,
we ate it quickly before making our way over to the fair.

When Matt had parked the car, I jumped out and looked
at the ferris wheel.

"Those things scare the crap out of me."
I said, staring at the highest point.

"You don't like ferris wheels?"
Brian asked, while grabbing my hand in his.

I didn't mind, I kind of liked the feeling of my hand in his.
"Nope. They're way too high. I'm up for
anything but that."

"We'll see about that."
Brian said, while we started walking towards the fair.

"I hate fairs."
Zacky said, shaking his head.

"If you're gonne be like that, I'm locking you up in Matt's car.
Or I'm leaving you here somewhere, doomed to stay at the fair
forever."
I said, while Brian tried to kick Zacky from behind.

"Watch it, Gates. And you couldn't. Because I'm just that
strong and fast. You'll never catch me."
Zacky said, squinting his eyes.

I laughed and rolled my eyes.
"Fine. Just behave and maybe then, I'll buy you
some candy. Or Matt could win you a stuffed animal."

"I do love candy.."
Zacky said, trailing off and I looked at Brian.

"He really does love candy."
Brian said, nodding.

I laughed and shook my head.
"Candy it is. But you'll have to be good."

Zack smiled and nodded his head.

We stayed at the fair for a long time, eating candy and enjoying
some of the rides.

"Come on, Gates. If you don't nail this, I'ma laugh at you
for weeks."
Zacky said, pointing at the gun in front of Brian.

"I was never good at this."
Brian said, before picking up the gun and trying to hit
the spaceships.

"Shit's hard!"
He said after a few seconds.

Zacky was standing close to Zacky and I was standing a little
further away, with Matt.

"So how's Valary? I always knew you guys would get married
and all that."
I asked, taking a sip of my drink.

"She's good. She's with Michelle tonight, she was kind
of down, apparently."
Matt said, smiling while we were talking about his wife.

"Yeah, she saw me and Bri this afternoon. She didn't
look too happy about that. I feel kinda bad."
I admitted, biting my lip.

"They're not together anymore, Dawn. Michelle just has
a hard time accepting it. She thought she could handle it
but life without Brian has taken a toll on her. She sees him all
the time, 'cause I'm married to her twin so some days it's
harder than others. Don't feel bad, though. It's been
months since they broke up and Brian seems to be moving
on."
Matt said, sincerely.

I nodded and smiled at Brian and Zacky, clearly
fooling around and pushing and punching each other
on the arms.

"You should try it."
Matt said, pointing at the Shooting stall.

"I suck at it. Big time."
I said, shaking my head.

"Brian?! Dawn doesn't wanna play."
Matt said, nudging me.

I opened my mouth in shock.
"You are so mean!"

He laughed and I saw his dimples.
I shook my head, knowing that I couldn't stay mad
at him.

"You and your stupid dimples. Fine.
Bri, if I hit one of those damn spaceships, you have to
sing and dance to 'California Gurls'."
I said, grabbing one of the guns.

"What? Why?! I didn't do anything."
he said, with big eyes.

Zacky had started laughing and Matt was grinning,
as well.

"I know but otherwise I'm not doing it."
I said, shrugging.

Brian seemed to think for a while and then smiled.
"Fine. I'll do it. But if you miss, you have to do something
for me as well."

"Which would be..?"
I asked, smiling.

"The Ferris Wheel."
he said, smirking and crossing his arms over his
chest.

"Oh no you didn't."
I said, my mouth falling open.
"That's just.. That's unfair. I'm scared of
heights!"

"And I'm scared of Katy Perry."
Brian said, like it was obvious.

I laughed and sighed.
"Okay. But you do realise that you're being a douche,
right?"

"Of course."
Brian said, winking and stepping back.
"Good luck."

I rolled my eyes and started to shoot.
After a few minutes I placed the gun in it's holder
and shook my head.

"I told you I wasn't good at this."
I said, pouting.

Brian walked over and looked me in the eyes.
"If you really don't want to go on the Ferris Wheel, we
don't have to."

"Yes, we do. I would've made you dance and sing to Katy
Perry so I have to hold up my end of the deal.
Let's just.. do it and get it over with."
I said, smiling at him.

He smiled as well and grabbed my hand.
"If you're sure. Let's go."

We walked over to the ferris wheel and I was very aware
of his large warm hand holding mine.

"We'll meet you guys later, okay? We're off buying more
candy."
Zacky said , when we were in line for the ferris wheel.

"Can you buy me some chocolate, please? I'm stressing out
so I could use something to ease my nerves."
I said, releasing my hand from Brian's and reaching
for my money.

"Sure. Hey, put that back. I'll get some for you."
Zack said, smiling at me and not taking my money.

"But you've been buying all the candy already."
I countered and holding out the money towards him,
still.

"Dawn. If you don't put that back, I'll have to kick your ass.
And I don't like to kick girls' asses."
Zack said, smiling sweetly.

I rolled my eyes.
"Fine. You men are so stubborn sometimes."
I mumbled.

"I heard that."
Zacky said, squinting an eye.

"You were supposed to. I was the one who wanted to go
to the fair, you shouldn't have to pay for anything."
I said, explaining.

"Dawn. This will be the only time we're
gonna do this. In the future, you'll have to pay.
For everything."
Matt said, swinging his arm around my shoulders and
acting like he was looking in the future.
"Anyway, we're off. Enjoy the ride."

Matt released me and winked before he pulled
Zack with him.

"Now I feel bad."
I said, scrunching my nose.

"I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear that. Look at how high
this thing goes!"
Brian said, excited.

"Say that one more time and I'm out."
I said, glaring at him.

"No, you're not."
he said, smiling.

I rolled my eyes and allowed Brian to swing his arm around
my shoulder to give me a sideways-hug.

"You'll be fine."
he whispered in my ear, before kissing the top of my head.

"Sure. I'll be nervous as hell but I'll be just peachy."
I said, looking at the top of the ferris wheel.
"God, what am I doing."

"I'll keep you busy."
Brian said, and I just heard the smirk in his voice.

"Oh, really?"
I asked looking at him.

"Of course."
he said, shrugging.

"Hm. Now I'm curious."
I said, grabbing his hand and intwining our fingers.

I mentally slapped my forehead for doing it,
feeling way too comfortable around Brian.
I looked up at him and saw him smile with his
eyes fixated on something in the distance.

My stomach was making leaps and bounds,
like there were butterflies in it, riding a rollercoaster.

When it was our turn, we sat down and I held onto
Brian's hand tightly.

"I'm so glad you're here."
I whispered and took deep breaths.

"You wouldn't be here if it wasn't for me, though."
Brian said, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.

I scooted closer to him and felt more relaxed.

"I was the one who wanted to make a bet so it's all
my own fault."
I let out a squeek when the ferris wheel started turning.

"Oh God. Oh God. Oh. My. God."
I said, closing my eyes and grabbing onto Brian's hand
with both hands.

Brian didn't let me go but I could feel him laughing
a little.

"SHIT! Why is it stopping. Brian?!"
I asked, my heart thumping in my chest.

"They have to let other people out and in. Could you do
something for me?"
Brian asked.

"Uh, okay?"
I asked, rushed.

"Open your eyes."
he whispered.

"But I.."
I started but I felt a pair of lips on my cheek.

"You'll be amazed."
he said, breaking away.

I sighed and opened my eyes.
"FUCK. We're high!"

Brian laughed and nodded.
"Forget about the height. Look at the view."

I turned my head to the left and saw the beach,
the houses and the whole fair.

"Wow.."
I said, forgetting I was scared.

"Exactly."
he said, leaning his head on my shoulder and looking in the
same direction.

Then the ferris wheel started turning again and I grabbed onto
Brian for the millionth time.

"It would be nice if they give you a goddamn heads up!"
I said, closing my eyes again.

"Hey, Dawn?"
Brian asked.

"Yeah?"
I responded.

"Remember back at my house, before Matt knocked
on the door?"
he asked, wiping some hair from my face.

"Yeah.."
I said, remembering how he'd leaned in.

He stayed silent for a while and then, I felt a pair
of lips on mine. The butterflies were
everywhere now and I forgot all about the ferris wheel.

I kissed him back, with everything I had.
His lips moved against mine and it didn't take him
long to ask for more, his tongue touching my
bottom lip gently.

I didn't want to fight for dominance with him, I was too
far gone. He could've done anything to me while
we were in the ride and I wouldn't have cared.

I placed one hand in his neck, keeping him close to me.
His hands were on the small of my back, adding pressure
as the minutes went by.

I didn't even notice the ferris wheel stopping until
I heard someone clearing his throat.
Brian and I broke away and we saw we had to get out
of the ride and I blushed.

"Sorry.."
I said before making my way out and walking away.

Brian walked after me and grabbed my hand, stopping me.
"That was epic. The whole line saw us."

I blushed.
"Shut up."

"Why are you blushing?"
he asked.

"Because you make me. And alot of people saw us."
I said, looking at my shoes.

"So what?"
Brian said, before placing his fingers under my chin,
making me face him.
"Let them see."

He kissed me again, his hands finding their way
to my cheek and neck.

My mind went completely blank and I allowed
the feelings to spread through my body.
I had no idea I could feel this way again.

After Jared, I thought I'd never feel on top of the
world again.
But Brian made me feel like that and then some.

"Wanna go home?"
Brian asked, after he broke away.

"Sure."
I responded, smiling up at him.

"There you are! I bought you chocolate, like
you asked."
Zacky said and handed me my candy.

"Thanks, Zack."
I said, before eating some of it.
"It's delicious. God."

"You guys ready to go home now?"
Brian asked Zacky and Matt.

They both agreed and we walked over to Matt's
car.
The drive to Brian's home was silent but it wasn't
awkward at all.

"Thanks for coming with us, guys. I had a blast."
I said, while getting out of the car.
"Zack, thanks for the candy, too!"

"No problem."
he responded, smiling.

"Did you at least have a little fun?"
I asked, with a smile.

"I kinda did."
he admitted.

"That's all I asked for. Drive safe!"
I said before stepping back and allowing
Matt to drive away.

Brian was already in his house, leaving the door open
for me.

I walked inside and found Brian on the couch.

"I think I'm gonna go home now."
I said, standing in front of him.

Brian nodded and smiled.
"I'll see you again, though. Right?"

"I'd love that, actually."
I admitted with a smile.

"Good. Me, too."
Brian said, standing up and grabbing my hand in his.

"Thanks for a wonderful day. I really needed it."
he said, while moving some hair out of my face.

"Thank you, too."
I responded and sighed.
"I'll see you soon?"

"Definetely."
he said, while gently capturing his lips with mine.
"We'll have to do this more often."

"I agree."
I said, biting my lip.

He walked off and came back a few seconds later
with a sharpie.
Brian grabbed my hand and scribbled something on my
hand.

"There."
he said, with a smirk.

I saw it was his phone number and I chuckled.
"You could've just put it in my phone, you know."

He shrugged.
"This is more fun."

I laughed and nodded in agreement.

"I'll call you."
I said, looking at my hand.

"I hope so. I'd really, really love to see you again
after today. You're an amazing girl."
Brian said, looking into my eyes.

"And queue the blushing."
I said, covering my cheeks with my hands.

Brian chuckled and gabbed my hands in his.
"I told you, don't hide it."

I sighed and rolled my eyes.
"I know, I know."
I smiled and gently pecked his lips before walking to
his door.

"I'll call you tomorrow, okay?"
I said, before opening the door.

"I'll be waiting. Goodnight."
he said, with a smile.

"Goodnight, Bri."
I said before walking outside and closing the door
behind me.

All the way to my house I couldn't believe what had
happened. I bumped into the guy next door, who didn't
exactly live next door anymore, and he was everything I
needed in a man.

When I came home, I quickly changed into my PJ's
and then stared at my hand for a while.
I had already put his number in my phone on my way home
but the fact that he was the one who had written it there,
made me want to look at it.

I wanted to text him but I didn't know if that was such
a good idea.
I took a deep breath and decided to just do it.

Thanks again for today. :) x

I stared at the screen and then hit send.
After a few minutes I got a text back.

Thanks for giving me the day off ;) Talk to you
tomorrow :) x

I smiled and siged.
"Talk to you tomorrow."
I whispered before I finally fell into a peaceful slumber.
