She was a friendless girl, but he watched her without compassion.

She had a solid gaze and lonely eyes, she was quiet and reserved. She seemed - not content with her loneliness, but accepting of it. Maybe that's why no one had bothered to extend the olive branch of friendship.

No. He did not spend his free time thinking about her. His sleep at night was not crowded with visions of her eyes.

It was simply that, when their tutor was going over rules he already knew, she was the easiest thing to observe. He could watch her without fear: his apathy towards her meant that even if she caught him staring, he wouldn't care.

And so he passed those two hours early every Wednesday morning idly staring at her, and wondering when his life would start.
