Chapter Eight: Nathan

September 28th, 2032
Tuesday
Nathan’s House, Weare, NH
2:30 A.M.

Nathan was standing at the alter. His head was down and he was facing the priest. He was at a wedding, but not he and Tammy’s. He was in a church and wearing a black tux. When he had married Tammy it had been beach wedding and he had been wearing a white tux. From behind him he heard gasps. He wanted to turn around and see what everyone was looking at but something made him stay facing front. He waited a few more seconds and felt someone lightly tap him on the shoulder. He turned around and his heart nearly stopped.

“Evangeline,” he said in a shock. She was standing there, looking up at him with a small smile on her face. She was wearing a completely white silk wedding dress. It was a mermaid dress and flowed out once it reached her knees. The dress had a long train that went on for at least ten feet behind her. A thick veil hung over her face, making her red lips and bright eyes the only thing visible. But Nathan knew it was her, he’d know her anywhere. But something about her was off. She looked ghostly. Her skin was almost snow white.

“Hello Nathan,” she said, in that soft southern voice he hadn’t heard in years. He was hypnotized by her alluring eyes. Beyond her he could see everyone witting in pews, watching them with smiles on their faces. His voice was stuck in his throat. Her red lips curled into an even bigger smile. She let out a small laugh that sounded like little bells in the wind. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

“You’re here,” he said.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” she asked confused. He didn’t want to tell her that she was dead. Instead he took her into his arms, pulling her up against his chest, never wanting to let go. Her skin felt ice cold on his own. He felt tears streaming down his face. She looked up at him and said

“Is my baby ok?” He was confused and asked

“What baby?”

“My little girl, Evangeline,” she said.

“She’s doing great,” said Nathan.

“Don’t forget about the other two, especially Trenton, he really does love you.” Nathan couldn’t help but let out a small sob, not caring how many people were watching. He felt Evangeline put her cold palm on his cheek.

“I love you Nathan,” she said.

“I love you too,” he said, “Please don’t go.” Her smile faded and she said

“I’m sorry I have too.” In a flash, Evangeline ran back down the aisle, her long train trailing gracefully behind her.

“No!” he said. He ran after her but she was already gone. He reached mid-aisle and felt his knees give out. He broke down in sobs. No one in the pews got up or even turned to look at him. They were still all staring motionless up at the priest. This was the dream wedding that he’d always wanted with Evangeline. He wanted it all to be real. He wanted her to marry him, looking absolutely beautiful in that white dress.
The pews and aisle sunk away around him and he woke up in tears. His covers were tightly wrapped around him and he sat up, taking in huge breaths.

“Daddy?” He heard a small voice next to him. He looked over to see his daughter Evangeline. She was holding her pink princess blanket and teddy bear as she rubbed her eyes sleepily.

“What’s wrong sweetie?” he asked, trying to catch his breath.

“I had a nightmare,” said Evangeline. He smiled and said

“Me too.” He lifted her up onto the bed next to him. Evangeline looked up at him and then said

“Daddy why are you crying?” Nathan quickly wiped the tears off his cheeks and said

“It’s just sweat.” He smiled at her. “Let’s get you back to bed.” He picked her up and carried her back to her bedroom.

“What was your nightmare about?” asked Evangeline. Nathan quickly lied and said

“Ghosts,”

“Mine too!” said Evangeline excitedly. Nathan smiled and said

“Want me to stay here until you fall asleep?”

“Ya,” she said. He rubbed her back for about fifteen minutes and she was fast asleep. He quietly went back to his room and tried to go back to sleep.

Trenton sat up watching a replay of the game. He was fuming as he saw himself fight Dylan and get escorted off the ice. Lucille walked into the room and said

“You should really shut that off and come to bed; it’s only making you angrier.” It was 2:30 A.M. and Trenton wasn’t tired. Trenton didn’t respond and kept watching. Lucille stood there watching him for a bit and then gave up, walking back to her room.

Lucille stood in the bathroom brushing her teeth. She wished Trenton would tear himself away from the TV and stop getting himself so upset over the game. He’d gotten the call earlier that he’d been suspended for two games. Of course Dylan would go free. A text message came up on her phone. She smiled when she saw it was Zach texting her. It read: ‘Hey are you still awake?’ Unlike Trenton, Lucille had become good friends with her half-brother Zach. They had both agreed on not letting their parents situation get in the way and had become close. Dylan however chose to stay away from her while he kept his relationship with Zach good. As Lucille was replying she heard someone walk into the bathroom. She was happy for Zach. He was playing for the Carolina Hurricanes.

“Hey Lucille do you have an extra blanket in your closet?” Lucille jumped in surprise. She turned to see Brian standing in the doorway. She felt butterflies in her stomach and felt extremely self conscious standing there with her tooth brush hanging out of her mouth. She quickly pulled it out and said

“Oh ya, ya I do,” she smiled at him as she walked past, feeling another rush of butterflies. She pulled open her closet and pulled down a blanket, “Here you go,” she said, handing it to him.

“Thanks,” he said smiling. “Is Trent still beating himself up over that game?”

“Yup,” said Lucille. “I tried to get him to turn off the TV but he won’t listen.”

“I’ll go see if I can talk to him,” said Brian, “Goodnight Lucy.”

“Goodnight,” she said, watching him leave. Brian Ryder was Trenton’s closest teammate. During his first year on the team Brian volunteered to take Trenton in and live with him. Lucille couldn’t help being attracted to him from the moment she met him. Anywhere Trenton went Lucille had to go. She had finished her last year in high school in Chicago. It had been rough. She wasn’t used to city kids and her only guardian was Trenton. She had refused to live with her father, not because she hated him but because she had known Trenton much longer and wanted to be close to him. After high school she had decided to attend the University of Illinois College of Medicine to be a doctor. At first she had shyly watched Brian but they became closer over time. Lucille couldn’t help but have a crush on him.

She finished brushing her teeth and got into bed. She could hear the sound of cars going by out on the city street. She didn’t like the city. She often lay awake at night, wishing she could be back home in Maine. The city was too crowded, confusing, and smoggy for her. After she graduated college and made some money for herself she was leaving and going back to her hometown.
