I'll Be There

An intersting morning

I woke up in that strange half-dream state where you know you’re awake but don’t want to believe it. Then I started thinking. It felt like I was in bed. But why? I must have fallen asleep on the couch sometime during Men in Black. Slowly I blinked my eyes. I was definitely in bed. Dj’s hotel bed. I sat up and looked around. “Good morning sleeping beauty.” A familiar voice called to me. “Um, hi” I yawned, looking for him. Now I know what woke me up. As my brain turned on it registered the familiar smell of bacon. Happily I jumped out of bed and went over to him. “You made bacon!” I exclaimed joyously. He smiled down at me. “Eggs too, if you like those.” “Love them.” I replied happily. I found his little fridge and grabbed one of many Monsters, popping it open and sipping it slowly, savoring the strange bubbly flavor. “Would you like to try some?” He asked, holding out a piece of perfectly cooked bacon. “Of course I would!” I received the treat and tasted it; it was so delicious that I must still be dreaming. I took another sip of Monster and stretched my arms, watching him finish the eggs. “I didn’t know you could cook, or rather, would cook for me.” I said sheepishly. He looked shocked. “Of course I would! You don’t expect me to order room service my whole life do you?” “Well, I suppose not.” I answered, trying not to sound sharp.
Dj piled the food onto two plates and handed her one, then went to the couch and turned on the TV. They watched the morning news, the forecaster predicting another “Sunny day in LA” while they ate their breakfast. “Man I’m stuffed.” She said, setting her plate down with a single piece of bacon left on it. “Full already?” he asked, his already long gone. She looked up at him with a raised eyebrow. “I don’t have 3 stomachs like you do Dj.” He pretended to be taken aback by this. “I only have 2!” he whined. This made her laugh. “You can’t finish the very last piece of bacon?” He asked, sounding surprised. She glared at the meat then shook her head. “No way.” “You sure?” Dj asked again, grabbing it and holding it tauntingly in front of her face. She frowned. “I just can’t do it.” She pouted. “Come on, you’re going to let me beat you?” He taunted. Her eyes narrowed at him. Ahh, he had found a weapon. He took a small bite out of it and winked at her. Suddenly she snatched the bacon from him and ate it whole, making a disgusted face as she did. He laughed. “Score!” “No way!” she retorted.
Now I felt just plain sick. Darn my instinct to refuse to lose. Even more confusing was his new attitude toward me. He was acting…well, silly. Friendly. I watched him sit back with his arms over the back of the couch, suddenly wishing I were allowed to be closer, to be in his arms again like the hug from before. He glanced over at me and shot me that million dollar smile, and I felt myself blush the color of 5 species of cherries. Do cherries even come in species? Well, in any case, my face was very red. Then his phone began to ring, and the moment ended. I turned my head quickly, feeling the blood escape my cheeks. I turned to face the TV and whatever story they were running about a new animal shelter. I couldn’t help but overhear Dj’s side of the conversation though.
