Til Summer Comes Around

Four

Summer of 2012
Santa Monica Boardwalk
Chapter Four

I pull my old chevie into my old parking spot and shut the car off. I climb out and take a stroll over to my friend Mikie at his hot dog stand.

“One dog please.”

“You never miss a day do you Brett.”

“Nope. Not a single one, especially during summer vacation.”

“Man you are 28 years old; don’t you have a life outside of this place?”

“Nope. Don’t want one either.”

“You need a girl man. You need one bad. Is that why you come here every day of the year?”

“No, I come here because I am waiting for a girl. I don’t have to find a new one when I have a perfectly good one who will come back to me someday.”

“Brett it has been ten years, when are you gonna let that chick go?”

“I won’t let her go until I know she’s happy, with me or someone else, hopefully with me, but if not, I will settle for her being happy with someone else.”

“Okay man, but it has been ten years, we have all moved on, maybe it’s time you do to. Here’s your dog.”

“Thanks man. Later.” I walk away. I mill around the boardwalk all day till sunset, then I go to Bubba Gump’s and order my drink. I look out over the water, and my breath catches in my chest. My heart stops. My eyes can’t believe what they are seeing. She looks my way, right at me. Without thinking, I stand up. As my feet move towards the door, and I tell the waiter to cancel my drink order.

My feet seem to glide down the stairs as the setting sun glimmers it’s last rays on the waves. My feet move on their own to her. Then, I am standing before her.

“Hi, can I help you?” her voice is just like from my memories.

“Hi Jillie, remember me?”
