Liaisons

Liaisons - Chapter 2

Daniel Pearson had a very tight schedule for his day. However, this was thrown out the window the moment he stepped into the ground floor elevator of Avant-garde Publishing House. He pushed the button for floor twelve, his ears pricking up at the sound of high heels smartly clipping their way along the foyers marble floor.

“Wait! Hold the elevator, please,” called a soft, feminine voice. Daniel stuck out his arm, stopping the door from closing. In walked a gorgeous woman, dressed to impress in a tight navy dress that accentuated her striking curves and a three quarter length blazer, showing pale delicate hands, which were furiously typing their way along the keyboard of her Blackberry. An amused smirk was spreading its way along her face and he couldn’t help but notice her lips. Soft and pink, not hidden under the foul false colours most women wore. He didn’t know why, but he had an inexplicable urge to reach out and run his fingertips along her stunning lips, sketching out the shape of her smile.

Looking down at his hands, he tried to ignore this weird urge he was having. Why was this woman having such a strange effect on him? Before his mind could attempt to process an answer, the elevator gave a violent shudder as it came to a halt. The woman, in an attempt to keep her balance atop her very high heels (which Daniel couldn’t help but notice made her legs look attractively long), dropped the handful of files she had been carrying.

Uttering an oath loudly to herself, she stuttered to a stop, remembering she was not alone. She turned around to face Daniel, her eyes meeting his for the first time. They were a deep hazel colour, flecked with gold. He found himself captured by them, staring into their endless depths.
Before he knew it, she blinked, shaking her head slightly. “Oh…sorry” she stuttered, her cheeks darkening with her obvious embarrassment. Not sure how to respond and determined not to make her feel worse, he smiled at her.

Feeling like an idiot, Daniel turned away, looking for something to keep him busy. Noticing the button panel, he pushed the alarm button, which let out a ringing sound into the silence. He’d obviously alerted security. Daniel didn’t know why, but this disappointed him. He was cutting his time with her short. Why did this bother him so much?

A tinny voice spoke out from a speaker embedded in the wall panel and before Daniel could respond, she spoke from behind me. Obviously familiar with the person, she spoke warmly and familiarly with him. He felt stirrings of jealousy in him when he was sure she was flirting with this unknown man. Where was that coming from? He had absolutely no reason to feel that way over someone he hadn’t even spoken directly to.

Daniel missed the last of what was spoken, his inner monologue too loud in his ears, but without any warning, she threw her hands in the air in exasperation. Before he could ask, she turned her back, picking up the previously forgotten files and setting them neatly in the corner. Unsure of what to do, he attempted to fill the silence, settling on the last thing he remembered being said.

“So, big meeting huh?” he said, internally kicking himself at how ridiculous he sounded. She looked at me again, the pale skin around her eyes creasing in confusion. This only made me feel worse. Could he have asked her anything more stupid? She wouldn’t be panicking unless it was important. She bit her lip, thoughtfully, obviously deciding the best way to tell him he was an idiot. Daniel was struck again with the sudden urge to run his fingers along her soft lips. But before he could do anything, she responded with “yeah, really important.” Spurred on, he continued with “A career changing meeting? What could be so important?” Daniel was half intrigued and half just wanting to continue hearing her voice, which was high and musical, like early morning bird song.

Rather than answering him, however, she turned her back on him again and sank gracefully to the floor, folding her legs under her. Following suit, Daniel sat too, slightly closer than deemed publicly appropriate. Without any preamble, she held her hand out politely stating, “I’m Hannah. Hannah Rosemore, Editing Director.”

What? That couldn’t be right. This couldn’t be the Hannah who he was supposed to be meeting right now. The person who had managed to inspire him so much he decided to come and meet her in person. Daniel didn’t know why this shocked him so much, but rather than say that he was who she was to be meeting, he simply grasped her hand in return.
Without any thought, he brushed his lips against the back of her hand. He had no idea where this old fashion gesture had come from, but rather than attempt to take it back, he simply said “Well Miss Rosemore, my name is Daniel Pearson.” Before his gesture made the situation any more awkward, he asked “So what makes this meeting so important?” Hannah, leaning back against the wall, looked him in the eyes. She paused for a moment, as though lost, then shook her head slightly and began to tell him all about it.

-------------------------------

Daniel was captivated. Not only by the amazing woman who sat in front of her, legs folded comfortably beneath, her perilous shoes cast aside, but by her story. She did not sell her project like most business people, eager for money and a good reputation. She created a tale, captivating and passionate, without any notes or hints. She hadn’t just memorised it, she lived and breathed her cause.

However, that the tale she spun for Daniel was with completely no knowledge of who she was actually spinning it for. BookAid kept their senior management team very under wraps. This was due to the fact that non-profit charities were common targets for government vendettas (supposedly on behalf of the tax payers) and many types of exterior money laundering schemes. Without anyone to target however, such schemes became much harder. As such, the company only ever referred to the management as “The Board” when dealing with other companies. But when Daniel had read through the proposal sent to him by Avant-garde Publishing, he could tell it was far from another scam laid out by money hungry businesses, but an honest wish to do some good in the world. The letter had spoken to him, as if the poetic justice of the words she had written to him could alone save the world.

-------------------------------

He sat, entranced, as she spoke about the project. Questioning her further when her feared she would stop. He loved watching her mouth, the way it curved around each word, softly and sensuously, taking time to enjoy every syllable. Even her explicates, what had made him chuckle, had taken on a darker, more suggestive sound in his ears. He was sure the word “fuck” would never sound like a curse to him again, just an erotic suggestion.
Daniel had no idea what had come over him. First that letter, which lay in the breast pocket of his suit (he had been unable to put it down since it arrived a couple of weeks previously) and now, meeting her, he felt like he was hooked on some expensive but thrilling drug. He had even felt a touch of jealously as she had conversed, somewhat flirtatiously, with the man on the speaker. He was captivated by her and finding himself wishing it would take hours for them to be freed, just so he could find out everything about her. Daniel couldn’t help but smile at the thought.

-------------------------------

Suddenly though, Hannah stopped, biting her lip worriedly. “Sorry I’ve been rambling on for ages, you must be sick of hearing me go on,” Daniel, smiling to himself, could not fathom why she would think this. He had been hooked on her every word, mesmerised by the silky tone of her voice. He gazed at her, a stab of longing piercing into his gut and before he knew it, he was responding to her. “Now, why would I do that, when I so enjoy watching you speak?” He smiled down at her, attempting to hide his embarrassment at being so forward. Had he gone too far? What did this beautiful stranger think of him? Before his thoughts could get any further out of control, she glanced up at her, confidently replying, “Well Mr Pearson, if I didn’t know you any better, I’d think you were flirting with me.” Daniel’s eyes widened. He couldn’t believe my luck. He couldn’t believe this glorious, fiery haired beauty was flirting with him.

Leaning back, trying to clear his head of this revelation, his leg brushed lightly against hers, sending an electric shock surging through my body. They glanced at each other and the fleeting thought “did she feel that to?” flew through Daniel’s head. Before he knew what he was doing, his hand, of its own accord, reached for her lip. Caught in her gaze, he ran my thumb along her bottom lip, its heated softness creating a delicious contrast to Daniel’s own fingertips. He leaned forward, replacing his fingertips with his own lips. The shock surged as their lips met and Hannah responded under his touch, eagerly pressing her lips back against his. Spurred on by her eager response, he wrapped her arms around her, pulling her to her feet. Never breaking contact, he pushed her back against the wall, tangling his hands in her thick, blazing hair and pressing himself against her, revelling in the heat that came from her soft skin. She wrapped a leg around him, pulling him even closer to her.

Echoing voices unexpectedly came from the door, and Daniel pulled back, glancing towards the door, confused by the noise. Comprehending the voices of their unwanted rescuers, he turned back to Hannah. She had her back to him, smoothing her hair and righting her dress. A crack of light appeared across the wall as the door was pried open. Hannah gathered her things, handing them out to the firemen, who promptly pulled her from the car. She sped off down the corridor without a backwards glance. Daniel’s head span with worried thoughts. ‘Oh no, what had I done? What must she think of me? I went too far.’

-------------------------------

After being pulled from the car, he turned into an adjacent corridor, pulling my iPhone from an inside pocket. He had no idea where the idea had come from, but calling his assistant, he had her call his current 10am appointment to confirm their deal. Daniel had been so captivated by Hannah’s proposal. Even though the meeting was taking in a rather unorthodox location, he still knew he was more than inspired by her passion. He only hoped she wouldn’t assume it was her physical passion that had made his decision.

Taking some creative criticism, i decided to edit chapter 1 and make Daniel's POV a chapter all by its self. Not sure if this will remain but i'll keep you updated. Don't forget to comment!!
