Hinata’s Hobby
To the outside world Sasori was a small, weak guy. He was always being picked on, thrown around and teased about his size. He was only 5’3 and for a guy that was extremely short. He was self-conscious about his height and hated the way he saw himself. He wanted to be more confident but it was hard. When he met Hinata, however, he began to come out of his shell.
This was the same shell that he had so desperately used to hide himself from the hard, cruel world. Now he was slowly coming out, like a turtle coaxed out with food. He was more outgoing, talked more expressively and with a passion he had never had before. He had to wonder how one girl could do that to him. Not even Deidara, his best friend, and officially called the chatterbox of all guys, had made him come out of his shell completely.
Sasori could clearly remember the first time he had met Hinata. It had been at the entrance of the school. Hinata had been standing off to the side, trying not to be seen, but obviously wanting to talk to Sasori and his friends. Out of the corner of his eye, Sasori could see her glancing at him. Sasori was even shyer then, but she had intrigued him. He told his friends he would be back and walked up to her. She jumped, slightly startled when he had talked to her.
“Hey, what’s your name?” He had asked.
She looked up at him, fear dissipating from her eyes. “I-I’m Hinata,” she stammered.
“Nice name, I’m Sasori. Would you like to meet my friends?” He questioned.
Hinata looked up into his eyes and that’s when he had seen her beautiful light purple eyes. She ducked her head suddenly and muttered, “I don’t know..”
“Come on, it’ll be fun,” he said, grabbing her hand.
She looked up quickly as she was being dragged across the grass. “I-I don’t want to be a burden,” she said abruptly.
Sasori let out a laugh, “You won’t be. They’ll love you.”
They did love her. Deidara looked at the two of them and let out a laugh. “What did I tell you about kidnapping girls, Sassy?”
Sasori smirked, “Hey, she just wanted to meet you guys.”
Tobi laughed, “It looks like she’s a bit afraid.”
Sasori looked back at Hinata and saw that it was true. She was shaking a little and averting her eyes.
“Hey relax,” he said coaxing her into talking.
She loosened up a little and nodded. That had been a fond memory for Sasori, but now that Hinata was interested in him, every memory of her was precious. Sasori was walking home, when he saw Hinata. She was carrying a stack of books and heading in his direction. They locked eyes and he waved. She nodded, the load of books starting to wobble as she hurried to reach him. Sasori walked faster and they met in the middle.
“Damn girl, are you a reader or what?” He questioned.
She let out a soft laugh that reminded him of warm summers. “Yeah, I love to read,” she said, adjusting the stack of books, so they weren’t in danger of toppling over.
Sasori smirked, and then ran a hand through his blood red hair. “I used to read a lot, but not so much anymore. I really need to get back into it,” he admitted.
Hinata smiled a gesture of pure sweetness. God, he loved when she smiled. “You should. There are tons of books that you could get into,” she replied.
“Such as?” He asked.
“Such as this one,” she said, handing him a book off the top of the stack.
He took it and looked at the title. It was a simple title yet the cover art evoked such mystery. It read, “Black.” The cover art was of white branches reaching out, with a plum clinging to them. The book was an ashy black and a circle was indented in the background, looking like it had been drawn in sand.
Sasori was intrigued. “Wow, this does look good,” he said in awe.
She smiled, “I told you.”
“So what’s it about?” He asked.
“It’s based on Christianity and the premise of it is that there’s a virus plaguing the world. The only way to rid the world of the virus lies in the dreams of one man. There are icons of God and Satan. I’m reading it for the third time. I highly recommend it.”
Sasori’s eyes widened. “That sounds really cool. I would totally read something like that,” he said smiling large.
“Well, when I’m done with it you can check it out from the library and we can compare notes,” she replied.
“Will do,” Sasori responded.
Sasori grabbed a couple of the books Hinata had been struggling with and walked with her to her house, even though it was in the opposite direction of his. He just liked being with her. Something was changing and he didn’t know what would happen next.
