The tuberculosis epidemic known as the ‘white plague’ spread rapidly throughout the United States during much of the 20th century. Due to high numbers of patients and the need for containment of the deadly disease, sanatoriums popped up across the country. Waverly Hills Sanatorium opened its doors in 1910 and closed in 1962 after vaccines helped stop the spread of the disease. During the 52 years of operation, it is believed that nearly 63,000 people lost their lives at Waverly Hills.
