The Fear Is Paralyzing
Vingt-Neuf
The playoffs were speeding by, and the Penguins were winning games. They had made it to the finals against the hated Red Wings, and Quinn found herself extremely nervous as she sat in her skybox for the third game of the series and the first at Consol Energy Center. She had invited Claire and Noah to the game, and they had come along, leaving a sick Riley with a babysitter for the night.
"How's she doing?" Quinn asked. She felt bad for the little girl who had pneumonia.
"She's doing better. She's still coughing but not like before," Noah responded without taking his eyes off of the ice.
"Maybe she'll be better by Friday and can come to that game," Quinn said hopefully. Riley may have only been three and not really understand the game of hockey, but the energetic girl helped Quinn keep her mind off of everything at stake during the game.
Claire smiled at her. "Oh she'd love that! I don't think she's too happy she had to stay at home tonight," she chucked, remembering the fight she had had with her daughter about her and Noah leaving her there.
"Maybe I'll stop by tomorrow and bring get some ice cream," Quinn said aloud. She hadn't spent much time with Riley lately, and she felt bad about that. She used to spend a lot of time with her niece, but with everything that had been going on lately, she just hadn't had time.
"You spoil her," Claire laughed.
Quinn looked over at her. "I have to spoil her! She's my only niece or nephew!" Claire bolted her eyes away and looked at the ground. Noah turned to look at his wife and gave her a look. Suddenly it all came together for Quinn, whose eyes went wide. "Oh my God! Are you...?" she trailed off, pointing at Claire.
Claire slowly nodded her head while looking at Quinn, a smile forming on her face. "Three months right now," she admitted.
"Congratulations!" Quinn practically screamed, hugging Claire, who was sitting next to her.
Mario walked into the suite at that moment, wondering what all the commotion was about. "What's the congratulations for? We haven't won the Cup just yet," he smiled.
Claire looked up at him, smiling, while she put a hand on her stomach. "I'm pregnant," she revealed.
"Well a congratulations really is in order," Mario smiled at her as he walked to the other side of the box to sit down. Quinn wondered where his family was, but her question was answered a few moments later when they walked in, greeting everyone.
As they sat down next to Mario, Noah leaned across Claire to talk to Quinn. "And in case you didn't realize, we're trying to keep the pregnancy low-key right now. So please don't tell Corinne or Dad or God forbid Dean," he requested.
Quinn have him a look. "Do you honestly see me having a heart-to-heart with Dean, telling him about this?" she questioned, and Noah laughed, knowing she had a point. "And I haven't talked to Mom or Garrett in a little while. I still don't think they're happy about my relationship with Kris," she told him.
"I think they're more upset you missed dinner last week to go to Detroit," Noah chuckled. Her parents had been upset with her when she told them that she was going to have to miss dinner last week to travel to Detroit with the team for game one of the finals. Noah had told her they had talked about it all evening during dinner. "You going tomorrow night?" he asked.
Quinn nodded her head. "I think they'd kill me if I didn't," she said, and Noah nodded, knowing she was right. "What about you?"
"I don't think I can use Riley as an excuse, not since I'm here tonight," Noah sighed. "So I'll be there right beside you."
"Thanks," Quinn smiled at him. "And don't worry, I'll keep your secret if you keep mine." Noah have her a questioning look, not knowing what secret of hers she was referring to. "Kris and I were talking and after we come out publicly, I'm going to move in with him," she said, beaming.
"Congratulations!" Noah and Claire said at the same time. The subject was quickly dropped, though, when the guys came out onto the ice for warm-ups. Quinn's eyes immediately went to Kris, whose hair was flying behind him as he skated without his helmet on to begin warm-ups.
She was nervous for a number of reasons. The Penguins had won the two games in Detroit, and if they won tonight, they could win the Cup Friday night on home ice. Once the playoffs were over, her relationship with Kris would be out in the open, and that scared her for the public's reaction. But right now she was nervous for Kris playing in this game.
The Red Wings had played extra physical these playoffs, and Quinn knew that Kris was a target for them. He had just gotten back to being able to play and the last thing she wanted was for him to get injured again.
The game was a fast paced one, with both teams scoring a goal in the first period, and the score staying that through the second. With ten minutes left in the third period, Tyler took a slapshot that sailed into the back of the net. As he celebrated with his teammates, Quinn could swear she could hear Danielle screaming for him, and she couldn't help but smile.
Tyler's goal was the winning goal, and the team celebrated on the ice after the win. Quinn stood up, saying goodbye to Claire and Noah who were going home before it got too late, while Quinn headed to the locker room with Mario.
She made her rounds through the locker room, congratulating the guys. She didn't need to tell Kris that she would meet him back at his place later on that evening after he was finished celebrating. She stayed there nearly every night, and it would have been odd for her not to come over. She did make sure to text him and tell him to take his time celebrating with the guys and she'd see him back at his place afterwards.
Quinn beat Kris to his own condo, but fortunately he had given her a key a little while ago so she let herself in. He had told her he would text her when he was on his way back. Quinn used this time to get advantage, grabbing the Victoria's Secret bag she had brought with her, pulling out the see-through teddy and matching panties. She laid it out on the bed before pulling the clothes she had worn to the game off of her, throwing them on the floor and putting the new lingerie on.
She laid in Kris's bed, waiting on her to text him, and after an hour she turned the television on. She had fallen asleep like that a while later, her phone still in her hand.
Kris walked through the door way later than he expected to be. He had gone out for a drink with the guys to celebrate and every time he had told them he was leaving, they would force him to stay. It was nearly three in the morning when he had finally left the place and headed back to his condo.
He walked into his bedroom and his jaw dropped when he saw Quinn lying on top of the covers wearing some lingerie he had never seen before. He felt awful be had stayed out with the guys when she obviously had some plans for them. He climbed into bed, gently kissing her bare shoulder. "Ma chère," he whispered in her ear and she slowly stirred awake. "Je suis desolé," he apologized, as she sat up in bed, rubbing her eyes.
"What time is it?" she asked groggy.
"Too late," Kris told her, kissing her shoulder again. "I'm sorry," he said in English this time.
Quinn shook her head. "It's okay," she said softly, standing up and grabbing one of Kris's shirts and throwing it on over her teddy.
"I should have come straight home, been with you," he told her.
"Kris, I wanted you to go out with the guys," she said, though Kris could tell she was disappointed, though he knew she would never tell him that.
"Maybe we can celebrate tomorrow?" he asked hopefully.
Quinn shook her head. "It's Thursday, family dinner," she reminded him. She would have given anything to ditch dinner and spend the evening with Kris, but she knew she couldn't do that.
"How about I go over to your place and wait for you after dinner?" he offered with a smile. Her apartment was much closer to her family's house than his place was so it made sense to go over there. "Maybe you can wear this again?" he asked, reaching under his shirt she was wearing and playing with the light material underneath.
Quinn laughed but nodded her head. "Sure," she replied.
He kissed her on the lips before apologizing one more time. "Je suis desolé."
"It's okay, Kris," she assured him. "Can we please go to bed? I'm tired, you woke me up!" Kris grabbed her wrist and pulled her into bed, holding her close to him. She kissed his chest before saying, "Congratulations, I'm very proud of you."
"Merci," Kris replied, kissing the top of her head. "Bonne nuit, ma chère. Je t'aime."
Quinn smiled at his words. "I love you, too," she told him before falling asleep almost immediately.
"How's she doing?" Quinn asked. She felt bad for the little girl who had pneumonia.
