Epilogue

Her body lay in the clearing. Eyes closed. Blood slowly congealing around her mouth, a hand lying across her stomach and one resting on the ground, with the remains of a crushed berry smeared across it in a dark stain. Around her neck a tiny glimmer of gold peeked out under her shirt. A locket. It had fallen open. Spots of blood lay across the glass like dark rubies. The pictures were obscured, unable to see. A cannon boomed out. The hovercraft gently picked her up, and carried her away.

Far off, in District 5, a boy stared at the huge screen in the square. As her family cried, he just stared blankly. He remembered the song that the girl from 12 had sung.

“Here it’s safe, here it’s warm,
Here the daisies guard you from every harm,
Here your dreams are sweet, and tomorrow brings them true,
Here is the place, where I love you,”

A tear crawled down his cheek. “Safe now.” He murmured. “Safe and sound,” His shoulders drooped, and he walked away. There was nothing he could do, nothing he would do. Apart from wish it hadn’t been her.
