How Could This Happen to Me?

Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Seb turned his head to the side, a light sigh escaped him as he slowly started to wake up. The sleep he had felt better then any other in previous nights, for once more sleep wasn’t needed.

A light groan left Sebastien as he sat up on his knees and blinked his eyes slowly. When his vision finally became clear, he saw a black jacket sprawled out where his head had been placed.

Seb turned his head and looked behind him, seeing his teddy bear resting where the jacket had the night before.

Sorry, after what happened last night with Nichole talking to us and playing with your hair, I’m not going to get a great night rest cuddling with an old teddy bear. The jacket smelled better.

Seb didn’t argue with the wolf as he picked up the jacket and laid back down, burying his face into the back of the clothing. The male Lefebvre breathed in deeply, every part of him began to tingle.

“We’re going back to Patrick’s house today, aren’t we?” Seb mumbled quietly into the jacket.

He felt the darker half of him agree with a deep growl that built up in his throat.

----

Seb walked down the stairs with Nichole’s jacket in hand. He heard someone in the kitchen and proceeded to check who it was.

Kate put the cereal away then picked up her bowl and walked into the dining room. Seb followed, “Kate…do you know who this belongs to?”

His sister raised her head up as Sebastien approached, her eye brows raised instantly upon seeing the clothing. “That’s Nichole’s jacket! She called me when we came back home last night wondering if I had seen it or not, where was it?”

Seb thought quickly, figuring that if Kate knew exactly where the jacket had been this whole time, questions would be asked. “It was sitting on the bottom railing of the stairs.”

Kate nodded her head, “I’ll return it to Nichole tomorrow at school.”

Seb’s grip on the jacket tightened, “I could bring it over to Patrick’s house, and if Nichole happens to be there I can give it to her.”

Kate smiled, “Alright then, better you then me I guess. Her friends still seem intimidating.”

Seb shrugged his shoulders, “They’re not too bad.” he walked out of the kitchen and made his way back up the stairs, ready to prepare himself for another day.

----

Seb walked up the long dirt road with a faster pace then he had the day before. Nichole’s jacket lay secured on top of his arm.

As Sebastien approached Patrick’s house, he saw Nichole’s Jeep truck sitting in the driveway. Happiness filled him instantly as he walked towards the garage.

David suddenly walked out from Pat’s house, he climbed into the driver’s seat of the truck and slammed the door shut.

Seb stopped beside the truck and looked in at David, the older of the two glanced back. “Well, hello there Sebastien.” a huge grin came to his face.

Seb raised an eye brow, “Hi David, do you happen to know where Nichole is at?”

David shrugged his shoulders, “She’s around here somewhere. I asked her last night if I could borrow her truck for a few hours though. There are times when Nichole randomly takes a walk into the woods, and none of us guys know where she’s at.”

Concern washed over Sebastien instantly, he turned his head towards the thicker half of the forest and breathed in deeply. The wolf whined, not sensing her nearby.

“You feel like giving her another hug?” David smirked.

Seb’s eyes shot right back to David, a light growl escaped him.

David raised his hands up, “I’m not as stupid as I seem to look. I was kind enough not to interrupt and at least let the wolf do his thing. Once I saw that you two were about to kiss, I had to break it up before someone besides myself saw you guys.

Seb’s face turned slightly red with embarrassment, “How could you be so sure that a kiss was going to happen?”

David smiled, “Nichole looked like she was going to make the kiss start, you could see it in her eyes. She would’ve pushed you away by the close distance if she didn’t like you, do you honestly think the rest of the pack gets that up close and personal against her? Hell, she was even playing with your hair!”

Seb looked down at his shoes, he was still unsure of his feelings towards the female of the pack.

David sighed quietly, he looked down at Seb’s arm seeing the jacket he held closely. “Got the scent remembered now?”

Seb raised his head, tilting it to the side in confusion.

David nodded towards the jacket, “Nichole’s scent, do you think the wolf has it stored, can track it if needed to?”

Seb shook his head, “Nah, I don’t think so. My senses aren’t that great, and I sure as hell don’t know how to track.”

David laid his arm out the window and patted the side of the truck, “You’ll learn soon enough.”

Chuck walked outside just then, surprise shown on his face as he saw Sebastien. “Hey, Lefebvre. What are you doing here? I assumed you’d want to enjoy your last weekend day at home being lazy.”

David piped in, “He came over in hopes to see Nichole and bring back her jacket that she misplaced.”

Chuck raised his eye brows, “Sorry to disappoint, but Nichole left bright and early into the forest.”

Seb nodded, sadness washing over him at the second mentioning of the whole reason he came over for, not being here.

Chuck reached out and patted his shoulder, “You can leave it here if you want, Nic will get it back sometime today.”

David turned his full attention towards the door now, crossing his arms and laying his head on top of it. “So, not to sound like a total asshole. But why the fuck are you the only one in your family who is a werewolf? Isn’t your twin sister one as well?”

“David” Chuck scolded.

“Oh, don’t snap at me Chuckles. You’re the one whose in love with his sister. Wouldn’t you like to know if she is part werewolf? It would make things a hell of a lot easier for you as a Beta if you had a mate to help you out in the pack.”

Seb looked away from David then over Chuck, “What?”

Chuck cowered slightly, his eyes down at his shoes.

“How do you think Chuck is able to understand what you are going through, Seb? It was because the same moment you first laid eyes on Nic and fell head-over-heels in love. Chuck saw your sister and had the same thing happen to him. Except she didn’t see the results.

Chuck growled deeply, becoming irritated that David was putting him on the spot and admitting something he was too embarrassed to talk about with the rest of the pack. “Fuck you, Desrosiers.”

David scoffed, “I wasn’t the one day dreaming and having an erection over a girl I just met!”

Seb shook his head, bad thoughts coming to mind. “Uh, that’s just gross. Can we please stop talking about my sister like that. It’s kinda disturbing to me.”

“I’m sorry, Seb. I didn’t ask for it to happen, it just did.” Chuck whimpered quietly.

Seb shrugged his shoulders, “No need to explain, we both had a rough time that day I guess. But David does have a good question, why do I show signs of being a werewolf…and Kate doesn’t? Why the heck am I a werewolf if my parents didn‘t have the genes?”

Chuck rubbed the side of his head, concentrating. “Unless your parents kept it a secret from both of you about having the werewolf gene. There is honestly no explanation about why you just so happen to be a wolf. From the past centuries of our bloodlines, our whole pack is purebred, or at least as perfect from each of our parents, grandparents and so on having the werewolf gene and passing it down successfully without a generation missing it.

But you? I know it’s extremely rare, and I’ve only heard about it once or twice from another pack having a member where only one in the entire bloodline had the gene. But a single wolf like that, there is hardly a success rate where it will be passed on to his or her children and continue on from there.”

David couldn’t help but cover his face and grin, “So why don’t you and Kate go in captivity and save the Lefebvre bloodline and make it successful Charles?”

Chuck felt a shiver crawl up his spine at the thought, he became distracted for only a moment before gaining control once more. “David, that is nothing to joke about. Our pack has already been around Kate, and we didn’t sense any sign of werewolf coming from her. She doesn’t have it, or is hiding it so well that no matter how strong the nose of the wolf is, we can not spot it.”

He looked back over to Seb, “Besides…” he continued talking to David.

“The male of the family is the only one who can pass on the gene. And since Sebastien is the first werewolf of his family, there is absolutely no guarantee that if he ever had children that they would become the same as him. So he may be the first and last of the Lefebvre werewolf family tree. Now if Kate just so happened to be a werewolf like us, with my family tree being so big and everyone in my family being a wolf. There is a slight chance that it could work, but the child would have Comeau bloodlines and fall into my family tree, not Sebastien’s.”

David looked at Sebastien with curiosity, as he had taken a few steps back from the purebreds, his head shaking slowly. The longer their conversation went on, the more frustrated he became. It wasn’t too long before Seb had Nichole’s jacket raised, nuzzling the side of his face against it.

“Are you okay?”

Seb raised his head up slowly, seeing both Chuck and David were staring at him. “Yeah…” he whispered.

Chuck dropped the conversation, seeing the frown on the pup’s face as he tried relaxing himself with the scent of Nichole. Although the Beta felt as though Seb didn’t really give a shit that he was part werewolf, it did seem depressing to know that he was the only one in his family and he was alone.

Chuck leaned against the truck, he crossed his arms.

“So, are you interested in becoming a part of our pack?”

Seb thought about this for a moment before responding. Although most of the pack mates were friendly to him, the human half didn’t mind hanging out with the guys. But the wolf? Now that was a whole different story all together. He didn’t want to follow by the rules, get bossed around by a guy he hated. There was nothing the wolf wanted in the pack except the female that was crazy enough to stick around.

The wolf wagged its tail at this thought.

Easy there, only time will tell whether or not Nichole likes us. We don’t know that much about her, and being in the pack seems to be the only opportunity we’ll have to be around her more often.

Seb nodded his head, “I am.”

Chuck crossed his arms, thinking things through. “Alright, well first off. In order to be in the pack, you have to pass five tests. They are: Sense, Courage, Health, Loyalty, and Strength. The pack mates you have met so far will individually teach you their specialty. None of us can tell you directly on how to accomplish the task, both you and the wolf need to figure that on your own before being accepted into our wolf pack.” Chuck turned his head and looked to David.

A huge grin came to David’s face, he hid it well though as he looked back over to Seb. “Come on, hop in the truck. I’ll show you around the border of our territory so you can know the restrictions that your wolf has.”

Seb glanced between the two, trying to figure out if this was about to be one of those tasks. He dismissed it, and walked around the other side of the truck before climbing in and sitting down.

Chuck patted the hood of the old truck, “Don’t go in a ditch, David.”

“Who me? I would never.”

Chuck rolled his eyes before stuffing his hands into his front pockets and walking back inside the garage and towards the house.

David started the truck, put it in reverse and backed out of the driveway.

----

David had exited out of the forest and on to the pavement, cruising through the neighborhood until he was out of town and on to the highway. He turned his attention back to the other male.

“So, why Nic?” he asked.

Seb looked away from the window and over to David, “Why Nichole, what?”

David laughed lightly, “Why did you suddenly feel attracted to Nichole. Was it the smell, looks, the fact that she pretty much has control of a wolf pack in the palm of her hands?”

Seb shrugged his shoulders, “I don’t know. It’s just…the first moment I laid eyes on her, I couldn’t help but feel happy. Both emotionally and physically. Something just clicked, and it was like seeing everything in color for the first time, breathing in the freshest air, running through the largest cornfield. Whatever was going on with me at that time, I wanted that experience for the rest of my life, and never wanted to live without it again.”

David smiled at this as he looked at the road, “Aww, you’ve got some sort of feelings for Nic.”

Seb blushed at this, he looked down at his hands.

David took a left and drove off the pavement and on to some dirt roads, once every couple of minutes he’d take a few turns, zig zag and end up on an entirely different road. Sebastien felt after the first few turns that he should keep track on how to get out incase the driver made them completely lost.

After fifteen minutes of doing this, David pulled into a small clearing in the forest and parked the truck.

Seb raised his eye brows in question, “Uh…what are we doing out here?”

David smirked, “Oh, well. I actually am going into the next town over to buy a couple things. But you! Well, you are actually getting dropped off here. Now move it, go on, get out of the truck!” David unbuckled his seat belt, reached over and opened up the passenger side door, he gave Seb’s shoulder a hard push.

Seb shook his head and held his hands up, “I don’t think so David. You gotta bring me back to my house, I’m not in the mood to play around.”

David unbuckled Seb’s seat belt and pushed him off the seat, Seb caught himself quickly before he could fall flat on his face into the dirt. “This ain’t no joke, Sebastien. I’m not playing with you at all, here’s task number one.” he closed the door shut and locked it.

Seb growled, “I’ve had enough of your bullshit, David! Bring me back home! You drove at least fifteen miles and I don’t know where the hell I’m at!”

David rolled the window down a little, “Yeah, and an average wolf travels thirty miles a day searching for food. I think its time your wolf experiences what its like to actually use its nose and find a trail. Good luck, hopefully you’re back before dinner!” with this said, David put the truck in reverse and floored it.

Seb suddenly became upset, and nervous as he stood out in the middle of the forest completely lost. “Dammit! I told him earlier I had no sense of direction! How the hell am I going to find my way back home!”

A thought came to mind, Seb laughed as he pulled out his cell phone. The smile faltered as he saw his phone had no signal.

“Fuck!”

----

Seb had begun to walk to where he assumed was the direction towards home. After twenty minutes of walking, he realized he was actually going in a big circle.

A frustrated growl left him, the wolf decided to take over.

I’ve got this, if the pack wants to test us right now when we least expect it, we’ve gotta show them that this is easy.

Seb closed his eyes, breathing in deeply before releasing, letting his whole body relax. When he felt comfortable, he opened his eyes and let the wolf take over him.

For once, Sebastien saw the forest differently. It didn’t feel like he was surrounded just by different varieties of trees, but it also began to feel a little bit like he belonged there.

With this in mind, Seb began to walk forward, feeling somewhat more at ease.

---- 3:16 pm

Seb had his eyes lowered to the ground, his feet slightly dragging as he continued on the path that the wolf insisted was the correct way.

After a few more steps, he came to a halt.

Sebastien looked around him, seeing no sign of a road or home. Thinking it through for a moment, the decision had been made to take a break and relax.

Seb found a spot near a big tree and sat down, he unzipped his jacket and rolled it up into a ball before laying down and putting it under his head.

Blue eyes gazed up at the top of the trees, seeing more green instead of the sky blue that would help tell him where the sun was at.

A deep growl left him, and for once it wasn’t coming from his throat.

Seb wrapped his arms around his stomach, trying to comfort the pain of being hungry as he fell asleep.

-----

Seb’s eyes snapped open, he sat up and inhaled as deep of a breathe as he could get. His heart was racing, and he suddenly had to breathe from both his mouth and nose.

Sebastien closed his eyes for a moment, trying to calm himself down. The wolf refused, being on high alert, something had caught his attention. Without further hesitation, he stood up and put his jacket back on.

The darker side of him didn’t give him time after that as he felt his feet lead him ninety degrees to his left, and run.

For a moment Seb figured it was probably some sort of food his wolf was willing to catch, whether the human part of him agreed to it or not. But the push to make his feet go faster even though his ribcage was hurting and struggling to catch air after he was sure that he traveled at least a mile and a half assured him that this was more serious.

Seb forced the wolf to stop as he slowly dropped down to his knees, the wolf growled at him.

Get Up! We’re almost there!

Seb shook his head, but stood up nonetheless. It was then his eyes focused on something straight ahead that was quite a distance. He began to run towards it.

After a few minutes, Seb slowed down to a walk and looked at an area of trees. His whole body felt tense as if he wasn’t seeing something that he should’ve been.

The wind blew, causing a few leaves to blow past him and around his feet as well. It was then Seb raised his head and took in a deep breathe.

When he opened his eyes, he turned and looked behind him seeing a small tree house that was built between two trees.

Seb’s throat felt blocked as something began to build up deep inside, he kept his mouth shut figuring it was either a growl or the wolf wanted to try a howl up to the owner of the secret home.

He didn’t need to as his attention focused suddenly on someone walking out on to the little porch.

Just then a very familiar face looked down upon him with a very confused look, Seb’s heart skipped a beat.

“Uh, how the heck did you find my secret hideout?” Nichole asked.

Sebastien’s face tinted a light shade of red, he stuffed his hands into his jacket pockets. “I-I…well, I just…you know…”

Nichole crossed her arms and continued to look down at him, “There is only one person besides myself who knows the location of this tree house. Now if he went and told the world then I might as well abandon my hideout.”

Seb thought about it for a moment as to why David would’ve asked him to come along for a road trip and then suddenly kick him out of the truck, the situation he was in now explained it all.

“Would this person happen to be David?” he asked.

Nichole’s eye brows raised in surprise, “So he did tell.”

Seb shook his head dismissively, “Oh no, he kinda told me to go along with him to town I guess and then suddenly kicked me out of the truck, dropping me off in the middle of the woods, I’ve been lost for hours. This is actually the first civilization I have found…”

Nichole watched Seb shift from one foot to the other, feeling a little bit uneasy as he stood by himself.

“Are you hungry?”

Seb nodded his head slowly, his eyes pleading. “Y-yes…”

Nichole moved from her spot and walked over to the other side of the mini log cabin, she picked up something and then tossed it over the edge. Seb took a step back seeing it was a rope ladder.

“Can you collect some firewood please.” she asked him.

Seb felt excitement build up, for once he was grateful of the pack mates advice on good firewood as he had collected a lot of it the day before. He set out into the forest, staying within viewing distance as there was no way he was going to leave Nichole out in the woods alone anymore.

Sebastien returned a few minutes later with his arms full, he placed the wood beside a fire pit that he assumed they were about to use.

Nichole was walking around a small shed that was as well hidden as her tree house, she closed the door shut behind her and grabbed as many of the items that she pulled out that needed to go near the fire pit.

Seb saw this, he couldn’t help but smile as her arms were completely full and she was trying to pull a single chair with her foot.

He walked over to her and picked up the items that looked like they would fall over any second, Seb also grabbed the chair and brought it over to where Nichole wanted it.

Nichole sighed with relief as Seb placed the chair beside the fire pit, and then placed all the little things on the chair. He then proceeded to put some wood into the circle of rocks.

Nichole pulled out a small pack of matches, she picked up a few dry leaves and put them around the sticks Seb brought in. Once satisfied, she brushed the match against the packet and lowered the lit fire.

Seb sat down and watched as the fire set in pretty quickly, he then picked up a cooking tripod and placed it directly in the center of the flames.

Nichole continued on from there as she placed a cast iron pot in the center, she then picked up a can of beef stew from her chair.

Sebastien raised his head at this, his stomach growled loudly at the sight of the food.

Nichole pulled out a pocket knife and used the mini can-opener to slowly peel back the lid of the tin can. She looked up seeing Seb’s eyes were completely focused as she poured the stew into the slowly warming pot, the tip of his tongue traced along his bottom lip before hiding once more.

A light chuckle left the younger of the two, causing the pair of light blue eyes to glance towards the laughter. While he did so, a sandwich was tossed over the fire towards him.

Seb reached his arm up, catching it with a single hand before bringing it down to his face and opening it. Without even giving it a second thought, he took a bite and swallowed.

It took under two minutes for Seb to finish that whole sandwich, when he did he let out a small satisfied groan.

Nichole couldn’t help but blush, “Guess you missed out on lunch completely huh?”

Seb opened his eyes and looked across the fire at Nichole, he nodded his head slowly. “I’m starving.”

Nichole poured the stew into the pot, it sizzled. “I didn’t expect any visitors to show up, otherwise I would’ve made fresh beef stew that would take all day to make instead of this ‘finished in a few minutes’ stuff that tastes about the same anyways.”

Seb shrugged his shoulders, “Ah, don’t worry about it. You could’ve told me to keep on walking, and to find my own food. But instead you’re feeding me, I’ll take anything.”

Nichole nodded as she stirred their dinner, once satisfied she sat down. “So you suddenly feel comfortable enough to talk to me now huh?”

Seb looked around the forest a little before focusing back on Nichole, “Yes, now that I have the pressure off my shoulders and know that no one else is watching, I don’t think I’ll get hit today.”

Nichole gave a slight nod of her head, “Fair enough.”

Seb stood up from his spot and walked around the fire, he sat down right beside Nichole’s chair and rested his chin on top of his knuckles. “So, how come you’re out here all by yourself?”

Nichole got up from her seat and stirred the stew, she sat back down and looked at her shoes. “This is the only time where I’m away from my friends. I enjoy their company, but it’s nice to get away from them every now and then.”

Seb raised an eye brow in question, “So then how did you come across this tree house?”

Nichole folded her hands and sat further back, “I built it myself about three years ago. Took a lot of time and patience, believe me…there were times that I was going to give up on it but pushed myself to finish it.”

Seb turned slightly to look at the cabin once more, an impressive look now set on his face. “You designed and built that all by yourself? No help whatsoever?”

Nichole shook her head, “No help, it took me months to finish it.” she stood up, grabbing a pot holder that was placed beside her. With a quick swift movement, she picked up the hot stew and placed it on the ground in front of Seb.

The smell of the beef, potatoes and carrots made his head spin, a lighter stomach growl left him.

Nichole walked away for a moment and back to the shed, a few minutes later she came back with two bowls and spoons. “Take as much as you can eat, I’ll have whatever is left over.” she sat back down, handing her new friend a bowl.

“Thanks” Seb scooped stew into the bowl, he raised the bowl and handed it towards Nichole.

She looked at him curiously, before a small smile broke loose and she took the bowl from him and handed over her own. Seb took the rest of the beef stew. “Yeah, I’m not much of a people person either. I guess you might’ve figured that one out on your own anyways.” he chuckled.

Nichole blew the spoon softly before taking the first bite, “I figured you had a harder time making friends then I did. That doesn’t mean I thought you kept to yourself.”

Seb sighed, “Might as well call it that. The past places I used to call home, I had friends…but just as soon as our family began to settle down and get used to things, we’d be up and moving again.”

Nichole breathed in deeply before releasing it softly, “Have you kept in contact with them?”

Seb looked down at the stew in his lap, “Sometimes. I haven’t contacted them since I’ve been here though. Still trying to settle in and get to know the neighborhood and such.”

Nichole reached over and pushed Seb’s head gently, “More like get to know more about my group of friends along with myself. I don’t think you’ve tried making friends with anyone else besides us have you?”

Seb laughed, “No, no one else has caught my interest enough to introduce myself to them and be social.”

“Speaking of introducing each other, I don’t recall you ever really doing that for me. Are you saying I’m boring?” she stuck her tongue out at him.

Seb couldn’t help but blush and look away for a moment, he readjusted the bowl in his lap before reaching his hand out, “Hello, my name is Sebastien.”

Nichole reached her hand out as well and shook his, “Pleasure to finally have met you, Sebastien. My name is Nichole”

A big smile crossed Seb’s face.

Well, the time has finally come. I finished chapter 6.

I could've finished it a lot sooner, but for the past...a little over a month or so, I've been very busy. It was easy to come back and work on the chapter, but after the month mark passed by...that's where it became hard to remember what I was going to write for this chapter, and I was near the ending of it the whole time!!

I began to doubt my writing, doubt the chapter on how it was written. That happens when I work on a chapter for too long. So...I stopped at 12.5 pages and called it a chapter for now. I'm not completely satisfied with it...but, it's an okay spot to end it, and continue on with the next chapter.

I'm not giving up on this story, I think about it every day. The 32 Sneak Peeks prove it!!
