Behind Our Backs

What Are You Doing here..?

“Oh…” Lila looked up. “Hi Ev…”

Greyson’s eyes widened and he began to dive out of the way.

“Greyson.” She grabbed his arm and stopped him. “Lila, what are you doing here?”

“I could ask the same question…” Lila eyed him.

Lie! Lie! Lie! The words repeated in her head.

“I – Um… -”

“I’m new in the neighbourhood and Evaline decided to invite me over.” He said coldly, eyeing Lila that same way.

“Yeah!” Evaline jumped in. “My mom got me to welcome him.”

Lila blushed.

“What are you doing here again?” She repeated.

“Well – Well – I – I –” Her best friend tried to come up with an excuse.

“Were you spying on me?” Evaline raised her eyebrows.

“No!” Lila blurted. “I came over to… to – to ask you if you wanted to come over Friday night.”

“Friday?” She chanced a glance at Greyson. “Well, I don’t know Lil... I have to -”

“Common Evaline! You never hang out with me anymore!”

She knew it was true.

“Fine,” She sighed. “I can, but I can’t stay really late.”

“Yay! Thanks Ev!” Lila squealed as she came up and hugged her.

Lila pulled away and looked at Greyson. She studied him carefully, making him blush and look away. He cringed slightly, not liking the intentions of her gaze. He was nervous for sure, his fingers tapped along his sides.

“Well, ummm… I’ve gotta go! See you later Evaline!” Then, she turned and walked down the street.

“Do – do you think she believed it?” He asked, trembling.

“I think so,” Evaline said. “But I don’t think she was here to ask me to hang out… She was sitting in the bushes, why would she be THERE..?”

“I don’t know,” He whispered. “But maybe I shouldn’t stay over, I mean - ”

“No! Please, please, please, PLEASE stay?” She begged.

“Evaline…” He sighed.

“Please?”

“Maybe -”

“Please?”

“What if I -”

“PLEASE?!”

“Alright Evaline!” Greyson exclaimed. “I’ll ask! God…”

“Yay! Thank you!” She giggled.

He rolled his eyes. “Whatever… But I still have to go.”

Together they walked across the street and into Greyson’s yard.

“Goodnight!” He smiled at her.

“Night.” She smiled back.

Then they went their separate ways and walked into their houses.
