Songs That Change People's Lives

Song #2

"Take Me Or Leave Me" from the Broadway musical Rent.

Growing up, I've always had to live by the expectations of others. My parents always expected me to be the perfect angel of the family, but I turned into a rebellious, outspoken, straightforward person because of the constant pushing. I started getting bullied in the fourth grade because I was neither stick-thin nor on the plump side. At ten years old, I developed bulimia and depression. I've been dealing with depression and bulimia for five years, and I've been battling anorexia, dyslexia, OCD, sex addiction, bipolar disorder, and Ménière's disease for four years.

When I first heard this song, I immediately felt the connection. I remember breaking down in front of my good friend and finally admitting everything. Since then, I've learned that other people can't control who I am or who I choose to be. I finally have the courage to tell people, "This is who I am. Take it or leave it." I have this song to thank for that.
