Shattered Glass & Broken Hearts

So this goes out to the ones that fall in love.

Two Months Later

Eight weeks seemed to fly by for Emily and Ronnie. A lot of things happened that neither of them were expecting, but they both knew that it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing to have changes in their lives at the moment. Perhaps the biggest change was that Max was no longer living on his own in Studio City.

After his overdose, his entire life had done a one eighty, and it did both Emily and Ronnie proud. Emily thought it best for her brother to live with her for awhile so that it would be easier for him to get back up on his feet, and Max agreed. Ronnie visited them almost every day, and on the days that he wasn’t there, she was over at his house with him.

Max moving in with Emily wasn’t the only change that happened in their lives. Hanna and Jacky were engaged now, and planning for an October wedding. Hanna was planning on a Nightmare Before Christmas themed wedding in Las Vegas, and while Ronnie knew it would be hard for him to go back to the city that had spelled his downfall, he was willing to do it for Jacky and his future wife.

The tension between Hanna, Joss, and Ronnie was a lot less severe now as well, much to Emily’s relief. She was so glad that her best friends were no longer hateful towards him. She had never stopped loving him, even through the pain, and to have her best friends realize that was something that definitely made her feel good.

Today, Ronnie was out with the rest of the guys doing some present hunting for Hanna’s wedding shower. Emily would have gone with them, but she hadn’t been feeling good for a few days and Ronnie and Max both insisted on her staying home on bed rest to get better faster.

The brunette looked up when she heard the doorbell to Ronnie’s house ring and she arched her eyebrow, wondering who was stopping by. Figuring it must be a UPS delivery or something, she decided to answer the door. Instead of finding a man in a brown suit standing there prepared to hand over a package, she found her two best friends standing there instead. Joss was carrying a CVS bag and Hanna looked more than a little concerned.

“Ronnie told us you’ve been sick for the last couple of days,” Joss spoke as she stepped inside of the door, not bothering with a ‘hello.’

“I have…I’m sure it’s just a cold bug or something,” Emily shrugged as she stepped aside for Hanna, who frowned as she folded her arms over her chest as she watched the front door close.

“Max told us that you nearly threw up when he made bacon the other morning,” Hanna pointed out as she leaned up against the wall. “And Ronnie said that you were complaining about being tired.”

“All flu and cold symptoms, guys. Relax. I don’t need to go to the hospital,” Emily told her friends. She was touched that she had such good friends, but she didn’t understand why they were both so worried about her.

“And…” Joss mumbleled. “Max said he hasn’t seen a bloody tampon in the bathroom garbage can since he’s been living with you. Em, that’s been six weeks.”

Emily frowned, confused by her friends’ words before her eyes widened when she realized what they were thinking. She brought her hand to her mouth and shook her head immediately before she laughed nervously.

“Oh, guys. No, no. I’m not pregnant,” she shook her head as she walked over to the couch and sat down on the cushion. Joss and Hanna followed her and Emily watched as Joss emptied out the contents of the CVS bag she was carrying out onto the coffee table.

Emily swallowed hard when she saw five pregnancy tests laying in front of her.

“Well, we’re going to make sure,” Joss nodded definitively. “If I’m going to be an aunt, I’ll need a lot of time to shop for baby clothes and think of cute pet names.”

Emily bit down on her bottom lip nervously as she looked up at her friends. Both of them were giving her expectant looks and she knew that there would be no getting out of this tonight. She had no choice but to take the tests.

“How many?” She finally sighed defeat.

Joss held up three fingers and Hanna nodded.

“At least three…I would do these ones, they’re the most reliable,” she mumbled as she handed over three different boxes. “What?” She asked defensively when her friends looked at her with wide eyes. “Me and Ryan had a couple of close calls once or twice and his sister told me which ones are better!”

Emily took a shaky breath as she nodded, walking towards the bathroom with the boxes. She still wasn’t entirely sure that she was prepared to take the tests. In fact, she was positive that she wasn’t. What happened if she was pregnant?

Would Ronnie want a child with her, or would he want her to get rid of it? There were so many questions and she had no idea how she was supposed to feel about everything.

“It’ll be fine, Em,” Hanna reassured her. “Just go.”

She finally nodded and then pushed her hair out of her eyes as she walked through the bathroom threshold, shutting the door behind herself. She looked down at the first box in her hand before she took a shaky breath as she opened it.

Taking the tests was the most nerve-wracking few minutes of her life as she waited for the results. She used all three and paced back and forth along the short space between the door and the wall until she looked down at them. Three pink lines stared straight back up at her, and she couldn’t help but feel her breath hitch in her throat.

Three tests couldn’t be wrong, could they?

She bit down on her bottom lip as she hid the test boxes at the bottom of the trash can before she opened the door. Hanna and Joss were both sitting on a couch nearby, both of them obviously stressed out.

“Well?” Joss finally asked quietly, breaking the silence that had settled between them.

Another shaky breath left Emily’s mouth before a nervous smile formed on her lips.

“It looks like one of you is going to be a godmother,” she answered weakly as she sat down on a nearby chair. Her legs were shaking, and she almost dropped the pregnancy tests on the floor before Hanna grabbed them from her as she walked over to where Emily was sitting.

“Oh my God!” She squealed happily. “This is great, Em!”

She put another weak smile on her face, unsure of whether or not this actually was a good thing. She still wasn’t sure how Ronnie was going to react to this. She wasn’t sure he’d be happy about being a father, especially considering the fact that the two of them had never talked about it before.

“Oh, don’t give me that look,” Hanna warned Emily as she arched her eyebrow. “You know that this is what he’s wanted for a long time, Emily. You know he loves you and he probably can’t wait to start a family with you.”

“But this soon?” Emily couldn’t help but ask the question out loud. “I mean…So much shit has happened in the last two months. What if we’re not ready?”

“You’ll get ready,” Joss shrugged with a reassuring smile. “Listen, he’s on his way home right now. Joss and I called him. We’re going to go over to my place so that we can get some shit done, but you can call us later if you want. You need to talk to Ronnie. Don’t shut him out.”

Emily nodded, though the idea of talking to Ronnie about being parents scared the shit out of her. She wasn’t sure it was going to be a good idea, mostly because they were still so new to being in an actual relationship with one another. Everything was so new.

She heard the front door open and close and couldn’t stop the feel of rising nerves as she looked at Joss and Hanna, who had both grabbed their bags. It was clear that they were planning on leaving and she couldn’t stop herself from wishing they’d stay.

“Call us,” Joss whispered as she and Hanna walked to the front door. She heard them say goodbye to Ronnie before the front door opened and closed, signaling that they had gone. She looked up when she saw Ronnie walking through the walkway between the foyer and the living room and smiled weakly.

“Hey,” she whispered.

Ronnie arched his eyebrow when he saw how pale her face was. He’d known that she wasn’t feeling well for a few days now, but he hadn’t thought she was that sick. Did he need to take her to the hospital, he wondered.

“You okay, baby?” He murmured.

She just bit down on her bottom lip and looked up at him again, this time her body shaking. There were only four words that she could gather the courage to speak.

“We need to talk.”
