Letters to Papa

Did I Do The Right Thing?

Dear Papa-

Today Arthur Berg and Kurt Meminger and Franz Hubermann were hitting the new boy, Rudy. I screamed at them and punched Arthur Berg in the face. Frau Steiner was angry at me, but Arthur and Franz and Kurt stopped bullying Rudy.

Did I do the right thing, Papa? You always said that violence wasn't the answer, but it solved this problem.

And, Papa, I liked it.

I liked making Arthur Berg scream like he was making Rudy scream. I liked being more powerful than him. I even liked how Frau Steiner yelled at me when she saw what I had done. And I especially liked what scrawny Rudy Vandenburg did after everything was over.

He came up to me and said, in this little tiny voice, "Thank you." And then he smiled.

His smile is just like yours, Papa. Big and crooked, and it made me happy just looking at him.

I miss you, Papa. I miss your smile.

Ich liebe dich-

Marta
