Letters to Papa

Hiding From Ourselves

Dear Papa-

Yesterday we had a blackout drill. Sirens went off and we had to go out into the bomb shelter in the back of the orphanage. It was dark and crowded and hot in the shelter, and some of the little kids were crying. Rudy was whispering prayers in Hebrew and we held hands. It helped a little.

We had to stay in the shelter all night. I am so tired. I didn't sleep at all. Frau Steiner is letting all of us skip lessons so we can sleep.

We're hiding from Germans, Papa. From our countrymen. Isn't that so sad? We're hiding from ourselves.

Ich liebe dich-

Marta
