The Great Escape

A Thousand Keys

“Izzy”

How many times do we have to break open a freaking cube to find a key? Oh, I think I’ve already broken my millionth one, yet there seems to be about ten times more than that amount lying about. “There’s no end to them!” I yelled.

Bailee threw one against a wall, shattering it, making a key fall out. Bailee and Holly were the only ones that could touch a key and figure out if it was the right one or not. I was in charge of breaking cubes and trust me, I had plenty to break. It was too bad that they couldn’t sense through the cube, because they said there was something blocking their way. Our only option was to break.

I shuffled through the cubes, trusting my gut as I grabbed each cube, even if my gut betrays me by it not being right. I still continued through the piles upon piles of them though. I’ve kicked some around, dozens of them shattered from impact on the walls. “Izzy! Make sure to pick those up!” Bailee called.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah…” I muttered, bending down to collect them.

When I started to pick them up, I just happen to look over. I squinted my eyes to make sure I wasn’t seeing anything, but somehow I knew I wasn’t. I picked up the last key and walked over to a pile of cubes. I pushed some away with my foot, and then I saw it, a cube with a key inside, but it had no glow. All the other cubes had a hazy color, and all you could see was the glow, but this was clear.

“Hey guys…” I said, picking it up from the rubble.

“What is it?” Bailee asked, looking up from her handful of keys.

“A clear cube?” Holly asked, standing up after squatting, seeing the cube in my hand.

“Do you think it’s the right one?” I asked.

“What are you waiting for? Open it already!” Bailee exclaimed, running over to me.

I pried it open and the key was there. Holly grabbed it, complaining how cold it was. “Did it just come out of an ice cube or something?” She asked herself, looking over it.

We walked over to the door, Holly stuck the key into it and the door flew open, revealing…

A freaking wall.

That sparked up my anger, “I’m sick of this-”

I swung my foot at the wall, the impact making it fly back until it hit another wall, where it crumbled and blew a hole. “Was that really necessary?” Holly asked, gawking at the broken wall.

“It’s the only way I can manage my anger,” I replied, shrugging some.

A few white coats peered their heads around the corner. A girl with glasses cleared her throat, “Um, congrats, you’ve complete the final round of Test 1. Although we were going to open that wall up for you after we made the announcement.”

“Oh…” I said, slightly flustered.

“Awesome, we finally did it!” Bailee said with glee, hugging Holly.

“Now how about we get you girls something to eat, you’re probably exhausted.”

My stomach growled at the thought of food. “Oh, yay,” I said, holding my stomach, “As long as I get a Gatorade.”

“We know. We’ll get you one,” The woman held out her arm, indicating us to follow.

And without much thinking, the three of us followed her.
