Snow White

It was four days later when I was washing the servants clothes in a creek when a pair of hands covered my eyes. I was about to scream for help when a familiar voice said, “Guess who.”

I let out a laugh. “Henry!” I said, spinning around. “You shouldn’t do that, you gave me a fright!”

“It was all in good jest, Snow,” he said, calling me by the nickname he gave me when I was ten. I smiled and stuck my tongue out at him before turning around and scrubbing the dress against the rock in the rippling creek.

“The queen wants you,” he said softly and I immediately froze. “I noticed you’ve been avoiding her for the past few days.”

I set the dress down on the rock slowly. I turned to see Henry kneel down beside me. “What’s going on?”

“I went into the queen’s room about four days ago to get the chimney brush when I heard her come into the room, and I knew that if she caught me there I would be punished severely, so I hid behind a curtain. Then I saw her ask her mirror who the fairest maiden in the land was, and a face appeared and said that it was me.” I said nervously.

“Well, it’s not hard to see why,” he said with a smile. I blushed and looked down at the ground before continuing.

“But the queen went into a jealous rage after that and I feared for my safety,” I admitted, biting down on my lip before looking up at Henry.

“You have nothing to fear, she has probably forgotten about it already. Besides, you have me to protect you. Now come, we mustn’t keep the queen waiting,” he said, extending his hand to me. I took it and he pulled me up before leading me into the castle. When we reached the queen’s closed door I hesitated before reaching out and knocking on it.

“Who is it?” she called out.

“S-snow White,” I replied softly.

“Come in, my daughter,” she called from inside in a melodious voice. I looked at Henry in confusion, but he just shrugged. She’d never called me her daughter before, something was definitely odd. I reached out and opened the door before taking a step inside. I saw stepmother sitting on her stool in front of her mirror. There was no face in the mirror this time. When she heard me come inside and turned around and narrowed her eyes at Henry.

“You may go now, huntsman. Close the door behind you when you leave,” she said coldly. He looked at me worriedly before nodding and walking out and shutting the door behind himself. I turned back to stepmother with a terrified look on my face.

“Now what’s wrong, Snow White? You look scared,” she said with an innocent expression on her face.

“I am not scared, my queen,” I replied. She shrugged before standing up and walking over to me.

“You look very pale, though,” she said, eyeing me with a cruel look in her eyes.

“My skin is always pale white,” I replied, looking down at the ground.

“Yes, and it’s such a contrast to your red lips, raven black hair, and your crystal blue eyes,” she said and when I looked back up at her I could see the jealousy burning in her eyes.

“And yet I’m not as beautiful as you, my queen,” I replied with a gulp. She looked at me in surprise but the jealousy never left those shining green eyes.

“Some would disagree with you,” she said calmly, which only made her tone more menacing.

“Is there an errand or chore you wanted me to do, my queen?” I asked, almost shaking in my floor-length dress when she stepped up to me. I suddenly noticed she had her hands hidden behind her back. I looked in the mirror behind her and my eyes widened in surprise when I saw a small knife clutched in her hands.

“No, I wanted to show you something, my daughter,” she said softly, taking a step closer to me. I looked up at her, my eyes wide when her lips suddenly twisted into a sneer. In one swift motion she raised her hand and I closed my eyes with a jump when I suddenly heard a noise behind me. I waited to feel the knife plunge into my skin when it didn’t happened I peeked open to see my stepmother standing there with a pleasant smile on her face and her hands at her side, looking past me at the door. The knife was missing form her hands. Where did it go?

I turned around to see Henry standing there. He must have opened the door just as stepmother was about to stab me. My breath was caught in my throat and my heart felt like it would beat right out of my chest.

“My queen, Snow White is wanted to wash the servants clothes,” he said. I turned back to her to see her cold eyes boring into mine.

“You may go, Snow White,” she said, waving her hand to dismiss me. I nodded before running out of the room with Henry close behind me. When I was out of her room I ran down the hall and out to the castle gates. I leaned against a tree for support and gasped for air. I felt a hand on my back and looked up to see Henry standing beside me with a concerned expression on his face.

“What’s wrong, Snow? What happened?” he asked. I opened my mouth to speak but I suddenly burst out into tears and fell into Henry’s arms.

“She tried to kill me!” I cried, shaking like a leaf blowing in an autumn breeze.

“She tried to kill you?” Henry asked in disbelief.

“She had a knife in her hands and was about to stab me when you showed up at the door!” I sobbed.

“I didn’t see a knife in her hand when I opened the door, did you?” he said gently, lifting my chin.

When I shook my head he gave me a smile and nodded.

“So, is it possible that you imagined it because you were afraid of her?” I nodded weakly and started to calm down.

“Now dry those tears, Snow,” he said with a smile, wiping my tears away with his hand.

“It seemed so real,” I replied.

“I know, but why would the queen want to kill you?”

“Because she believes my beauty surpasses her own, and she is always so vain.”

“She wouldn’t kill you just because you are more beautiful than her. Come now, let’s go finish those clothes,” he said with a smile, holding out his arm for me to take. With a smile I took his arm and we walked back to the creek together.

“Have you talked to Prince Edmund since he proposed to you?” Henry asked as we washed the clothes.

“No, I have not seen him since then. The maids say he went on a weeklong hunting trip with his father,” I replied.

“What will you tell him when he gets back and wants an answer?” he asked, looking up at me with a unreadable expression on his face.

“I don’t know yet, but no matter what I say, I will refuse him,” I said with a sigh. I didn’t know how he would react to my refusal and I was not looking forward to finding out at the end of the week. Henry and I finished up the laundry and brought them back to the castle before I realized I didn’t have anymore chores to do. It was very rare I had time to do what I wanted.

“Do you have any chores to do right now?” I asked Henry once we hung up the clothes to dry on a line.

“No, do you?” I shook my head and we both smiled at each other.

“Come on, let’s go do something,” he said, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the woods. We walked down a well-hidden trail and came to a waterfall emptying into a small lake.

“Come on, let’s go for a swim!” he declared.

“I think I shall sit on the bank and enjoy the sun,” I said, walking over to the soft grass at the end of the lake and sitting down while Henry took his boots and shirt off.

“No, you’re coming in with me, Snow,” he said, walking over to me.

“No, I am not. The last time I went swimming with you I caught a cold and was bedridden for a week!” I protested.

“That was because it was the end of winter. It’s spring now and the water is just right,” he argued, sitting down next to me. I shook my head and I saw him give me a grin.

“Well if you will not go in willingly, I’ll just have to take you with me,” he declared. I saw the mischievous glint in his eyes but before I could jump up and run away he grabbed me around the waist and carried me over to the lake in his arms.

“No, put me down now, Henry!” I demanded, pushing against his chest and kicking my legs. Suddenly I felt myself fly through the air before landing in the cold spring water. I clamped my mouth shut and swam for the surface and when I opened my eyes I saw Henry standing ankle-deep in the water, laughing.

“You look like a water drenched cat!” he exclaimed.

“Henry, could you help me up, I’m afraid I twisted my leg in the fall,” I pouted and his expression suddenly turned serious.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, Snow,” he said. He waded deeper out into the lake where I was and was about to pick me up when I grabbed his hand and pulled him down with me. When he came up he wiped the water away from his eyes and I laughed when I saw his black hair plastered to his face.

“Ok, now are we even?” he laughed, shaking his hair like a wet dog. I splashed some water into his face before giving him a smile.

“Now we are,” I replied with a smug smile.

After we were done splashing each other we walked up to the bank and laid down to let the sun dry us.

“Snow, do you ever plan on marrying?” Henry asked out of the blue.

“Maybe one day, but certainly not to Prince Edmund. Do you ever plan of settling down?” I countered.

“Yes, but I there is only one girl I want and she would never want to marry me,” he admitted. I propped myself up on one elbow and staring at him.

“And who is she?” I asked.

“Oh, no. I’m not telling you,” he said with a laugh.

“Oh come on, I could help you. Just tell me who she is,” I prodded him.

“You cannot help me out with this,” he said, plucking a piece of grass before putting it in his mouth.

I put my hand on his shoulder and he froze and turned to look at me. “Please tell me?” I asked softly. He let out a sigh before opening his mouth-

“Huntsman!” We both heard someone call in the distance. He let out a sigh.

“Maybe some other time, Snow,” he said, pulling his shirt on and slipping his feet in his boots.
