The Price Of Curiosity

"The noticed android walks past a wondering chamber."

I shot her a questioning glance.

"What does that even mean?"

"It's the password."

"Password to what?"

She tilted her head to her right and moved to the computer.

"Be careful. You might not like what you find."

She whispered as I sat down in the computer chair.

"Whatever. I can handle it."

I turned on the computer, an old Commodore 64. It immediately started buzzing like it was going to explode. Of course. The only time I try to use technology and it backfires.

"What the hell's wrong with it?"

She turned away from me and looked out the window, suddenly interested in what was going on outside.

"Becca."

She still didn't respond.

I sighed.

"Come on. You know I hate it when you ignore me like that."

She turned around with a smirk on her face.

"Why are you asking me?"

"It came out during your time, right?"

"That doesn't mean everybody had one!" She sharply replied. "Plus, I was killed before my family could afford to buy one."

It was easy to forget she was a ghost.

"Look, can you help me or not?"

She walked back over to the computer. It started working right away.

"How did you -"

I shook my head.

"Nevermind."

By now I knew not to question the supernatural.

The computer screen turned bright blue and froze. We both waited, anticipating something, anything, to happen. Nothing happened. After waiting for another minute, I slumped back in my chair.

"If this piece of shit would work -"

Suddenly a textbox appeared on the screen.

"Maybe that was the start up command." She joked.

Ignoring her comment, I sat up and read it.

'What is the password?'

"The noticed android walks past a wondering chamber." I replied.

A laugh played through the speakers.

'Welcome'

Welcome? What kind of computer says welcome? Or better yet, what kind of computer laughs at you after you log in?

'Ask' It said.

"Why?"

'Ask a better question.'

"Why?"

'Because I demand it. Now ask.'

As I started to answer, a loud crash came from somewhere downstairs.

"What was that sound?" I asked Becca.

She shrugged.

"I'll go see."

'They found you.' The computer inputed.

"Wait, what? Who found me?"

'Them.'

"What the hell -"

'Start running if you value your life.'

Becca ran full sprint up the stairs and slammed the door shut.

"We need to leave. Now."

'I told you so' The computer stated triumphantly.

"Shut up." I yelled at the computer. "Who's here?"

The doorknob rattled. Becca tried to hold the door closed.

"Don't ask, just run" She said in unison with the computer.
