The "You're Not Fat" Campaign

Cultura Mexicana Presentation

I am sitting in Spanish class, my eyes glued to the Smartboard screen at the front of the room. Jack Miranda is showing my class a music video as part of his cultura mexicana presentation. The music video is set at a pool party, and there are skinny skinny girls in bikinis everywhere. Their hipbones jut out. Their skin is taut. My hands go down to my hips, which are covered by a blanket of fat. I squeeze the fat and scowl at the skinny girls on the screen. Why aren't they fat like me? Why aren't I skinny like them? My fingers obsessively trace my collarbones, which are becoming more visible, much to my delight. My collarbones are a reassuring reminder that I can - and will - get thin.
